  • Today in episode 365, we look at the following three topics:
Budgeting Credit Cards: How should we manage credit card debt in our budget? We'll look at the difference between credit cards we pay in full each month and credit card debt we are working to pay down.
Maximizing Returns: There is one simple strategy we can use to get the most returns out of a mutual fund or ETF. We'll talk about that strategy and how we can use it to build a solid investment plan.
The Power of Subtraction: Finally, we'll look at why removing things from our lives can be just as powerful as adding things.

As far as the "maximizing a funds return" topic, I can't help but be reminded of the late Jack Bogle's stand on rebalancing which IMHO supports this principle.

I particularly like the way that YNAB handles this. When you get a paycheck you allocate the money to your spending categories in your budget. Then if you buy something with your credit card, the money automatically gets transferred from that category to your credit card category. Then at any time when you go to pay the credit card bill, that money is already set aside.

Re: investor vs fund return an additional consideration is timing of investor contributions. Most of us invest periodically let’s say monthly vs a lump sum investment at a point in time. Say it differently the return of 10,000 invested on January 1 vs the return of 10,000 invested in equal amounts monthly will be different

Hey Rob, not sure if anyone has reported this to you, but the audio for the Spotify podcast of the show has some weird audio distortions/issues. I haven’t noticed the same audio issues on the RUclips version of the show.

If you explained how the investor returns were calculated, I missed it, so it seems mysterious to me.
