Higher charge damage as a centaur with the lower body of a bull, but more lumbering.

15:23 - Most of that 'clippity clop' is the horseshoes. They literally have metal plates attached to the bottom of their feet, designed to improve traction on dirt. However, if I were to allow a player to play a centaur, I would turn around and say that better shoes were invented in the realm.

    • @lockwoan01
      @lockwoan01 4 года назад +1

Agreed - no self-respecting centaur would let someone NAIL a piece of metal to their feet. That being said, for those civilized, or urbanized, centaurs that live in towns and cities, I could see something like the Roman Hipposandal, which functions similar to the modern bell boot, and could be tied to the horse's hoof - with a certain amount of improvements of course, so that they could be easily taken off/put on by the centaur themselves.

Homebrewed her to actual draft horse size so she's closer to 7-8' and the dm gave a choice of "boons" to every character that had drawbacks. I played one campaign back in 3.5 that was a warfare campaign. There were a LOT of open-battles we led and participated in. Typically 50-100 per side.
My centaur was a fighter that my DM gave me some freedom to work with. He let me skip the Mounted Combat feat, ruling that it wouldn't apply but also wouldn't need to be a prerequisite for me. I grabbed Trample, Spirited Charge, and Ride-by-Attack by third level. By 7th, I had also picked up Ambidexterity and Two-Weapon Fighting, and since they are large, I dual-wielded greatswords. I also had each hoof equipped with fiery horseshoes that dealt 2d4 extra fire damage.
As long as no one could stop me cold (Str of 35 by 10th level), I could kill 20ish low-level enemies in one charge. It was awesome! He didn't really fit any other campaign, though.

I've never played D&D, but I've always wanted to make a drider PC and centaurs are a similar kind of creature. I've fantasized how I could make a plausible backstory for a neutral good one. Maybe she was a powerful sorceress / wizard, but failed her trial to become one of Lolth's priestesses by refusing to kill her kind-hearted but weak brother and was cursed to wonder as a drider in the underdark until she helps out a group of adventurers. Perhaps she makes a silk rope to get them out of a pit or drops from the ceiling onto an enemy that was about to kill someone. She could polymorph herself to enter town without creating a panic or serve as a mount for smaller party members while in the wilderness. I picture her making silk scarves for everyone or patching clothing with her spinnerets. Basically, a very sweet person who was raised in a harsh culture and forced into a monstrous form, but never lost her empathy. Kind of sounds like an interesting backup character after my first character dies while in the underdark.

@@e.s.lavall9219 I'm impressed you found this comment! I'm going to repeat some other ideas I had on the subject from a thread in another video:
I've got so many ideas on how to introduce the character. It'd need some help from the DM. She could be casually hanging upside down in a tunnel where her head is at eye level. The ranger or rogue of the party rounds a corner while scouting ahead and almost bumps into her face, yells in surprise (willpower roll not to yell in primal terror), and she screams back. The party runs up and the someone says (or DM through an NPC, if none of the players say it) "what's the problem?!" and she immediately points at the ranger and says "He surprised me! It was *terrifying* !" Then she starts crying into her hair because she's still upside down.

    • @osmium6832
      @osmium6832 4 года назад

@@e.s.lavall9219 Sunlight sensitivity, size, and interactions with strangers would cause issues if she ever tried to adventure outside the Underdark. Could be homebrewed away, like you mentioned, but could be worked around. Sensitivity affects attacks and perception checks while in daylight, but not spells. Driders would need to be medium or large like they did with centaurs in the video. A bard might suit her better for roleplaying interactions: she'd still have access to the mend cantrip to repair things with silk, but also have illusion magic, performance and deception abilities to better convince others that she was a normal humanoid while disguised.
I picture her asleep in the back of a covered wagon during the day with a mask, gloves, and large blanket over her abdomen & legs. She could pretend she's just riding in back with "the stuff." The drider form is a curse, so I guess it'd be up to the DM if polymorph or shapeshifting of any kind would work at all.
She could also simply convince people she's not a threat through sheer charisma, but the appearance is a big hurdle to get over. One of the payoffs from saving a village could be that the wary townsfolk finally let their kids play with "the monster" with a silk soccer ball or something.

One thing to think about is the possibility that the Playable version is actually a subrace of the version depicted in the Monster Manual. Explanation - real life horses/ponies come in all sizes, from like 2 feet at the withers (base of neck), on up to 6 feet (if not more). After all, there's many different breeds, ranging from small to large, usually for different purposes. It wouldn't be improbable for an "Urbanized" subrace to be a bit smaller than their more "Nomadic" cousins. After all, if you try taking a large draft horse inside say a house - they might go through the floor, while a smaller pony might be okay where the floor is concerned.

This is a great video on how to play Centaurs. I only played one. He was captured as a baby/colt and raised as a gladiator... so he wasn't very Centaur-like in personality. It was 2nd Ed using the Roman Empire handbook and Humanoids handbook. I know, boring compared to what you presented but I loved playing that gladiator that the party that I joined purchased (freed) as an adventuring companion. I was a shield-rush specialist who favored the cestus as the hand weapons.

The trick to talking about mtg colours is about the enemy colour contrasts. Green is life when contrasted with black as death. Its reality when contrasted with blue as illusion.
And white and red contrast one another as order versus chaos. Red is also contrasted with blue as fire versus ice and white with black as day and night.
Perhaps the overlapping contrasts are the most important.
Selesnya becomes life and light (day), while gruul becomes fire and might (relaity). They contrasted with each other primarily along the order chaos spectrum.

The one time I played a centaur, she was a gloomstalker ranger archer, high mobility is so nice for staying out of melee range, and centaur with a bow is so iconic. And on more mechanic side, gloomstalker gives you the Darkvision your missing, and not just that, but also makes you invisible in darkness so you want to fight in the dark now.

He fell behind the herd when injured, was healed and rescued by a human cleric living among dwarves, and found a community. He died protecting his home from gnoll raids and was transported to a demiplane to join a group of others brought after their deaths to finish the job of protecting the realm from some loosed powers running wild. It is a lot of fun so far!

I don't play DnD, nor do I have any of the Player handbooks or stuff about Dnd. I only have what I have seen from other people playing DnD and what I can find on the internet. However, I had a homebrew idea of a Centaur Artificer. The idea is that she can take the artillerist specialisation and mount the Eldritch cannon on a platform on her back, basically become a mobile turret on the battlefield. To take care of the climbing problem, she will also have a carpet of flying wrapped around her horse half so that she can fly around.

One thing that bears mentioning: Certain kinds of equipment (most obviously boots) don't work with Centaurs unless you modify them, while they can (or at least should be able to) make use of the two or three different kinds of magical horseshoe.
I feel it's always important to note whether any particular race has anatomy that might make someone do a double take and ask "Wait, what?" if they're described as using a particular item, though for now that list only has Centaurs, Minotaurs, Merfolk(?) and Naga on it if I remember correctly, and the latter two are in the Planeshift material.

If you choose a totem warrior barbarian centaur where you focus solely on the path of the elk but also pick up 3 levels of rogue to gain the thief subclass. Climbing no longer costs extra movement and if your dm agrees that your walking speed is equivalent to your movement speed you have a centaur with a movement speed of 130 feet per second or 88 mph and that’s without counting any feats or magical items

  • @marieking5969

I’m playing a centaur barbarian now. I’m new so I didn’t realize it was a cool combo, I just liked both. Also one of the coolest things about being a centaur is being fey. Last session some harpies tried to charm me and my elf companions, and it didn’t do anything with their high wisdom and the spell not working on me. It works well with being a barbarian so I have a good chance of avoiding a lot of charming stuff which is awesome. Generally our party is pretty good at not being charmed (with a wood elf monk and high elf artificer).
The climbing issue does suck, but I find it fun to have a weakness.
Also will agree about dungeons being kind of bad for a centaur. Before level 3 we did sunless citadel, and I got to use charge/hooves combo once. Another time I was going to but I one-shot killed the thing I was going to hooves.

I figure a centaur druid would be the best really, because they move faster, carry more stuff, have natural weapons like their hooves, and can carry off party members if they are sick or dying so they can get away from danger. Any other obstacle like swimming or climbing, which would normally be kind of a pain in the ass for a centaur, would be kind of nullified if you shapeshift into creatures that can swim and fly. So basically you'd have all the strength and speed benefits and the other problems are kind of swept away if you can shapeshift into the creature you want.

Some other things to consider when roleplaying a centaur.
    1. They are half horse, and horses weigh a flip-ton. Google says roughly 840 - 2,200 lbs. So rickety bridges, thin ice, deep mud, all pretty terrible things to walk on.
    2. They probably produce more body heat. This doesn't mean much but wearing heavy armor may be uncomfortable for long periods of time for them, also more reason for group to hug them when it's cold.
    3. They are probably not very happy on boats. Their hooves have little traction and it's a small confined area with no space to run around. But hey, it's D&D, if you want a centaur pirate with 4 peg legs, have fun.

Feeling very inspired to design some centaurs based around tribes of the plains and tundra, Scythian, Hun, Mongol, or Turkik peoples.
A campaign based around what is essentially a Mongol invasion type scenario would be very interesting - Genhis Khan as centaur would be a very interesting BBEG. Alternatively party could be centaurs or other races recruited into the forces of an expanding or migrating group, sent to explore ahead. They would be the ultimate kite build as horse archers.
Personally I think Ranger might also be a very good build for a centaur, the same survival skills that made the mongols such incredibly mobile armies and mechanically they would be better able to take advantage of ranged weapons while still having the flexibility to fight up close - probably with a reach weapon. Theyd be optimised for wide open spaces but with the flexibility to fight up close for a while if needed.
Would add a specific move "Partian shot" which allows you to take a reaction to shoot a ranged weapon at a character if they move to pursue you.
If you wanted to make the build broken you could give them a disengage as a bonus action. This would set them up to either maintain range for bows or to charge in, attack and disengage before they could be countered. All off the top of my head here of course.
