    The concept of the first name and the surname passed to the next generation is actually fairly new. Most of the time only nobility did this to signify what family they come from, or what great person they're descendant of. The surnames came from the nicknames given to people to differentiate between them, like everyone in the village knows John the smith, who is different person to John the farmer. Additionally, without the official record of your birth, stored by the government, your name was simply what people around called you, and possibly how you present yourself to them, which could change during your life.
    In MLP, the pony's name is whatever the parents called them and it's only somewhat confusing to us, because many names have more than one part to them, which kinda looks like a surname. Some families like to keep the second part consistent, like Pies or Cakes, while other showcase their family origin by sticking to their theme, like Apples. It is also not unusual to change your name in Equestria, like Spoiled Milk did after marrying Filthy Rich, which was a good choice, even though Spoiled Rich isn't that much better. Many ponies probably change their name after getting a cutie mark and that's why we have so many ponies whose name suspiciosly matches their special talent. We get a hint of that, because Mrs. Cup Cake mentions that before she knew what her talent was, she was called Chiffon Swirl.
    tl;dr: There are no rules and no surnames, and why do I care so much, it's only a show for little girls.

      That’s some of the same theories I have; that ponies can get name changes after getting their cutie marks, as another part of the coming-of-age process; and that each species (and sub-species) has their own traditions about full and family names

  • @ShirotoraGodsbane
    @ShirotoraGodsbane 2 года назад +72

    Actually, pony names are very simple. Ponies don't have surnames. They may have family names, like the Apples and the Cakes, but the family name is completely separate from the individual's name.
    That said, some ponies may stick to a theme, like the Apples, the Cakes, and the Pies, but most do not.
    Also, the 'Sparkle family' is a fan given family name and as far as I know it isn't canon.

    I love how even the first rule is incorrectly demonstrated xD
    For real, though; Equestria seems to have at least three naming traditions (probably originating from the three tribes) that used to be historically widespread, and that some ponies still choose to follow in the modern day... and some don't, including at times within the same family. It's fascinating to analyze (and exploit for fanfiction writing).
    However, that's all they are, traditions. There really don't seem to be any rules whatsoever on names within modern Equestria, and even total name changes seem to be no problem!

  • @alanalot
    @alanalot 2 года назад +26

    Ponies are whatever they call themselves. I have a feeling that whenever they discover their talent they change their name; Kinda like how last names used to work in English.
    Examples: Smiths were blacksmiths, Taylors were clothing tailors, Walkers were cleaners of clothing, and Wrights were carpenters.
    It's could also be similar to how Japanese Kanji works with multiple words coming together to make a name.
    Example: Ninja 忍者 is a fusion of 忍 meaning patience and 者 meaning person.

  • @OptimusSmyth
    @OptimusSmyth 2 года назад +34

    Lol, it is all bullshit. XD
    My headcanon for MLP is that ponies just name their kids whatever the hell they want to, but what's more confusing is how they are able to name a pony so perfectly that it lines up with what their cutie mark/special talent ends up being. Characters like Rainbow Dash and Pinkie were of course named after the colors they are so that is a no-brainer, but they obviously predicted the future with characters like Twilight Sparkle (the sparkles on her flank) or Fluttershy (sounds like butterfly). With characters like Applejack deciding at one point that she no longer wants to live with the Apples and instead with the Oranges, it's interesting to see a pony go against what their name describes them as, but then again, we saw Tempest Shadow actually do that. I like to think AJ would have given herself a new name after deciding to stay with the Oranges long enough. Characters like Celestia and Rarity I guess just had names that are descriptive enough for them but don't go perfectly with their cutie mark unless we get technical saying the sun is a celestial body and gems are a rarity.

    This is why, when my mother, Lucimare (no surname), had me with the stallion whose soul and body she devoured, she gave me the name Satallion.
    In short, pony names work the way they do in a more symbolic sense than in the way that measely humans do it, even if some pony families keep human naming conventions.

    Additional variables:
    1 determined by their cutie mark, how they know the talent before the appearance of the magic flank tatto…wait…..coat coloration and then forget it?
    2 dependent on the….
    (What is the name for the classification of earthpony, pegasi and unicorn? I guess “race” like how we humans incorrectly use that word for one’s genetic heritage, tho our has next to infinite “race” mixes with generations and they have a 3 option (4 with alicorn))
    …race of the child.
    unicorn has astronomy, light phenomenons and time of day (understandable considering they were in charge of the sun and moon)
    Pegasi has meteorology as their magic allows flight, wind generation and cloud tangibility
    Earthpony, everything that’s left.
    3 somehow some has humans name that doesn’t directly translate to a concept. Tho this isn’t as weird considering how strange English names are. T.ex: smith, baker, page, strong and bloom; which is all surnames somehow. Not to mention: bob, clear, dug, mark, will, and wade; Like seriously a real sentence is “will Will Smith smith?”. This to happens for ponies *see clear skies and Clear Skies.

    Pie family
    Well it was well established that "GRANNY PIE" existed. On who's side, we don't know. However igneous PIE is likely granny's son. The choosing stone basically put igneous and cloudy together thus I'm guessing cloudy had another last name yet adopted the last name of pie.
    Keeping with the rock motif as the apple family
    Pinkie pie
    Maud pie
    Limestone pie
    Marble pie.
    When pinkie married cheese sandwich they had a foal of their own. While we don't know their name we do know pinkie refers to them as LIL CHEESE. thus leading me to believe that its the mare who takes the last name in the marriage.
    Bo hothoof
    Bright Macintosh
    Igneous rock Pie
    Carrot Cake
    Filthy Rich
    Nightlight Sparkle
    In the case of Nightlight. His last name more than likely would be sparkle. In this case I'm believing this is the only case so far where the mare didn't take the stallion's last name. It wouldn't make sense to have your mom and you to have the exact same name, twilight sparkle
    They obviously combined the names to get Twilight sparkle
    Shining Armor....I'm going with armor is another middle name thus Shining armor Sparkle
    Flurry heart now, well she was named for the near catastrophe she caused having nothing to do with the "family name"

    Zephyr- first name. Breeze middle name. So shy would logically be last name. Some people are ok with being called by first and middle name tbh, especially if it makes sense to do so. Hence Zephyr breeze shy. Now as for fluttershy's middle name, we don't know it thus simply fluttershy. Rainbow dash now.....
    Probably a play on bo's mane and tail along with the fact that she's fast. We know wendy's last name so the play on name logical conclusion would be
    Rainbow dash hothoof. Assuming wendy took bo's last name

    I pulled something from TV tropes (not fully, the last paragraph is mostly written by me)
    The earth pony system was a personal name - family name system, with consistent surnames among families, similar to the system used in most Western countries (Pies, Cakes, etc)
    The unicorn system was a family name - personal name system, similar to that found in some East Asian countries (Twilight Velvet and Twilight Sparkle)
    Finally, to encourage loyalty to the state above their families, pegasi were given names unconnected to those of their parents (Windy Whistles and Bow Hothoof naming their daughter Rainbow Dash)
    Several generations after unification, the three naming systems got blended together, with the unicorn system dying out somewhat and the pegasus system becoming dominant, and that's how we get stuff like Hondo Flanks and Cookie Crumbles naming their daughters Rarity and Sweetie Belle. The earth pony system still gets used from time to time but not consistently across generations (Stinkin' Rich, Filthy Rich, and Diamond Tiara), and some families just settle for theme naming (Grand Pear and Pear Butter)

    I have a headcanon that all the fruit-themed ponies are all distant descendants of the "The Seed family". The Seed family is what I call Granny Smith's family (from the flashback in Family Appreciation Day) because of their job collecting seeds. While Granny Smith started the Apple family, her siblings each started other unique families. After all, the Apple family is near-infinite and there's Hayseed Turnip and Aunt and Uncle Orange

    Tbh with the anmount of info given it seems like earth ponies have conventional naming system with the first and last apart from the Apple family, which decided to go with apple names possibly a family tradition maybe a little son gets the last name for some reason it could be because the country pick a size seem to just go with whatever they want and unicorns may be the same way maybe earth ponies are just more traditional with more rural areas the pies are pretty separate from the rest of the world so maybe they kept their traditions of a conventional Amy system I don’t know what I’m talking about

    I can see Last names being treated like Middle names, specifically in that they are chosen by the parents rather than being automatically inherited, and if they are given one at all in the first place. A parent can decide if their children take on their last names or not, choosing something else if they decide not to pass down their family name.
    It would also explain why many Characters don't have Last names to begin with since if Last names serve similar roles to Middle names in this universe, then that means a Last name isn't inherently required when naming a newborn.

    I don't believe that ponies have surnames in the same way human cultures do. Rather, pony families have a theme that is used as inspiration for the names of the children. These themes don't need to be specific words/titles, but can be anything within a certain concept. Twilight's family follow the them of "light". Night light, Twilight, Shining, Sparkle. In my headcanon, the Light family are distantly related to the Glimmers and Shimmers, which would explain why all three families have sired powerful mages.
    The Apple family are obvious, it's all apples: types of apple crops, flavors, and the word apple itself.
    The Pie family show us that the themes of the parents often come together in the children to make new combinations. So on one side you have the Pie theme, and on the other you have a rock/mineral theme. Adopting the family theme of your spouse is optional but seems reasonably common.
    The three tribes of Equestria each have some very persistent "meta-themes" that are common throughout the individual families within those tribes. The unicorns have themes relating to the heavens, light/darkness, and magic. Earth ponies have a deep heritage of farming and food production. Pegasi families carry weather/flying themes.
    I also like to imagine that some amount of magic is involved with picking a name in the first place; maybe parents are divinely inspired when picking a name, which is why it always fits so well with a character's destiny/cutie mark. Maybe the same magical force that gives a pony their cutie mark, also chooses their name before they're born. For example, twilight is a period of time between day and night. Twilight Sparkle literally brought together Celestia (the day) and Luna (the night). Her existence was the fulfillment of a prophecy that was set into motion one thousand years before her birth.

    • @KevinSpartanYT
      @KevinSpartanYT 2 года назад

      while i was commenting it is when i realized that it truly doesn't make sense in the base, but i guess you need to combine the strong points behind the names, in their case is:
      Yellow Feathers: Nature/Pure
      Sirch Mountain: Exploration/Curiosity + the characterisms of a mountain place, like the cliffs and of course rocks.
      Prismarine Rockliff comes as the combination of this little but strong things behind the meaning of the names or words, Prismarine as the jewel or valuable stone Prism, and as the majority of the things in nature are green plains or the vast ocean, alongside with its pure blue color, it shows as that a Prism can show this colors of the nature if put some light throu it with another natural thing, the light of the sun! another important thing to the nature. And the Rockliff part is self-explanatory, but yeah i do know that it is meant to be "Search" instead of "Sirch" but this is the combination of the word Search and Torch, since in some places... in some magical places, a Earth pony woulnd be able to just make light without magic, so the torch is the natural solution

    Honestly this has always confused me, and furthermore do the ponies conform to their names or do the names conform to the ponies? Like is there a magical celestial light that comes down and whispers the name of a pony in the mother’s ear based on what their future cutie mark will be or is the naming process so traumatic that in ingrains hobbies and personality traits that cause a pony to subconsciously bend their life in the direction that their name would suggest. Like if your name is Brick Layer you either have a choice between construction work or road building. As far as last names go it’s pretty clear why a pony would take a last name when married but others don’t, business branding. Filthy Rich, Mr Cake, and Igneous Pie all run business and there for when they sale their wares they want their children to represent the family business. The Apples are so old every pony knows them already and they seem to be the only ones selling apples even. Any pony with an apple name selling apples obviously come from the apples family duh. Anyone without an apple cutie mark selling apples will soon go missing anyway so there’s no confusion there either. Either way I say it’s branding.
