When he was in training he used two unnamed swords before he even got Wado Ichimongi. So no that wasn't his first sword either. Just the most backstory-relevant.

No no, he's got a point
just wanted to add a possible meaning to swords and especially mihawks sword. in the middle ages it was very common in europe and in asian countries to set special gemstones into the fittings of swords. people believed different gemstones had "special traits" to help in all kinds of situations (my favourite "trait" is from the amnethyst, people thought it would help them against drunkenness).
so when we look at the blue and greenish gemstones on yoru, the most obvious stones what comes to mind are sapphires and emeralds.
the meaning of the gemstones are quite fitting for mihawk.
the emerald stands for strengthen the wielder and the sapphire for better perception and/or eyesight.

I'm convinced Yoru was once Imu's sword. As there are 19 swords in front of the throne, Imu is the 20th king and therefore should have a sword, Yoru is a sword that imu could wield
Imu is not the 20th king, Lili is and she didn’t stay at Mary Geoise that’s why there’s one missing sword

another quite nice video of yours! I missed the talk about swords back in the Wano-arc.
In my oppinion there are some inconsistencies in the story. For example where comes all that exact knoledge about swords from? Thashigi has a booklet with detailed information (e.g. the number of supreme grade blades) of swords, but some of them were forged in isolated Wano. Is there no swordsmith to craft another ranked sword and if so who adds it officially to said book?
I hope you can gather some content or theoryes and eventually make another great video of it.

I personally think that Gryphon is a different sword than the one Shanks carried in the beginning and here's why : in the flashbacks Shanks was using a sword that mached his strength when he still had his dominant arm but after he lost it by saving luffy he had to search for a different blade that was able to compensate with the loss of his arm in some way. This sword happenes to be the one that we see at Marinefort better known as the Gryphon.
With its oversized cross guard and crude handel wrap when compared to the decorative embellishments I've often theorized that Yoru was originally a daggers for giants but was reworked into a massive single edged sword for humans and Mihawk wielding it caused it to become a black blade
I just imagine a great giant using a massive supreme black blade like they could cut an entjre island in half with one slice.
It would be tiny for a giant lol maybe a buccaneer or just a tall human

I strongly believe that a swords blade can only be turned black by covering it in celestial dragon blood! Like Ryuma did once. We don’t know where Yoru came from… and if Mihawk went to Mary Geoise to acquire it, you know what! Because if it’s only Haki infusion afterall, i feel like Roger’s Ace, Oden’s Ame no Habakiri and Enma aswell as Shanks’s Gryphon and definitely Rayleigh’s double-edged straight sword with his advanced Busoshoku Haki and advanced Haoshoku Haki must have been turned black after all they encountered! And remember those guys are one of the strongest Haki users out there! That’s why i think it almost can’t be done only by Haki! (I didn’t mentioned White Beard as he primarily used his Murakumogiri to channel his Gura Gura no Mi with full force)

Could it be that Mihawk defeated one of the Holy Knights and took his blade Yoru ? Could be that Mihawk was notorious for being extremely skilled and powerful swordsman that the World Government saw him as a big threat in the future and so they sent a Holy Knight to eradicate him (his past could also play a role in that decision), or maybe he went to Mary Geoise to find a strong opponent only for him to fight one of the Holy Knights but its unlikely since he would have to fight multiple opponents at once. The empty thrones markings on the blade could also hint to that, like maybe all of the holy knight weapons have those

I only knew of Kikoku's name through modded Minecraft of all places. I used to watch some of Yogscast Duncan modded series and that had it. In that mod, the sword actually dealt damage to you in creative mode or more specifically, it dealt void damage. It fits the OP nature of Law quite well.

Thats my theory: After countless of battles against strong enemies, wielded by a master swordsman and with armament haki infused, the Haki becomes part of the Sword and stays permanently on it. And it can benefit from the others ability of armament haki: Internal hits. Thats how Zoro defeated Mister One in Alabastra. "Cutting, without Cutting"
And Armament Haki is always shown as black skin or layer.
I think yoru is THE one missing weapon from the empty throne room. There is 19 correct? What if this sword held some secret significance? Or something terribly dark? Look at mihawks eyes and imus..... They are the same.... Arent they? 🤔🧐 Theres a whole list of things suspiscious but i think mihawk is most sus of them all, and i think he is VERY much connected to the empty throne room in some way. And i will even go as far as to say this blade belonged to a strange character named "lili" of ancient alabasta brought up recently but cobra. I love swordsmenship, now unfortunately One Piece doesn't really dive deep into this spectrum like swords, techniques etc. Which is fine, this series isn't bleach or demon slayer (although I would like more details on sword specifically in the series). Things like Devil fruits, Haki , technology are definitely more prominent in the series. However it would make sense that perhaps every sword in the series ( the more higher tier ones) have some unique ability whether unawaken or already so. Emma itself is already like consider a magic swords just from what it can do with someone's Haki, so if all the Supreme grade have their own abilities is plausible. Similar to bleach Zanpakuto, now it's unlikely Oda will actually spent much time if not any flushing them out in the future. But the case can always be made from what we seen from Zoro so far.
I've heard opinions on how he has to replace the wado ichimongi but I agree with you I think it will be one of the strongest swords

One of my Theories on "Yoru," Mihawk's blade is that it initially wasn't part of the 12 supreme grade swords, nor was it originally called "Yoru" either, since Yoru roughly translates to the word darkness. Its very Aptly named for its black blade, but it could not be forged this way, so someone had to name it "Yoru" after decades of usage, after turning it into a black blade. Thats why my theory is that, "Yoru" was initially a great grade sword, but after extensive usage by Mihawk or another, it upgraded in rank into to one of the 12 supreme grade swords, after becoming a "black blade." after this happened Mihawk either renamed it, that or It had already been turned into a black blade by someone else when Mihawk obtained it, but it still wasn't originally a supreme grade sword till it became Haki infused.
It's not, all the 12 supreme grade blade where natty, they didn't powered up by becoming black. These swords are based on real life swords, it's an actual ranking.
Okay so, mihawk was the one who probably blackened it. This is most likely true because we saw him holding the same sword but not blackened on his back during the flashback of roger's execution

My theory to this is, that his sword is cursed as well.
The curse demands for Blood or a Victim every time the sword gets drawn.
So even if Shiryu just wants to see the blade, he has to kill someone.

I just noticed that the holy swords in the book I'm writing are super similar in mechanics to the cursed blades in one piece, and I had no idea how the cursed blades worked when I made the holy blades
I believe Ace is shown not to be a black blade. Panels show Roger using it before coating with haki and it doesn't have the same black blade color scheme.
That also said - it definitely wasn't a black blade in the anime - but that's anime, so eh.
If you count Whitebeards Naginata, you also have to consider Kaido's Kanabo "Hassaikai"
I think that in japanese they dont really mean swords when saying it, more like blades... maybe thats why WB counts and kaido doesnt, but i might be wrong there
Kaido's kanabo is not bladed.
A naginata is a blade and murakumogiri is canonically a supreme grade blade so there is a big difference

I'm pretty sure enma and ame no habakiri are weaker than shisui because its a black blade, that probably makes it the strongest great grade blade and isn't it confirmed that supreme grade blades are the strongest of all blades and are superior in strength to all other grades so I don't think it's right to put enma and ame no habakiri above the following blades.

If you watch the anime oden's journal the flashback scene you can see that Shanks already have a sword but it's not confirmed if it is the gryphon or not but in Chapter 1 I'm sure it is the Gryphon just in diffrent style of drawing
Okay, can someone point me to a chapter where it says that swords get better from prolonged use? I always understood that a sword jumps a grade once it becomes a Black Blade but I don't remember someone saying that even without reforging the blade into a Black Blade it could jump a grade. Also something to point out is the weird grade system. Because if the cursed blades are powerful blades, then they should be one of the graded swords, but Law's sword is not one of them although it is cursed.
I think Ohara is just wrong about that, as far as I can remember, and having spent the last 10 minutes researching, it is exactly as you said. Turning a sword into a black blade naturally makes it jump up a level, that is what the manga said. Personally I think sword grades are similar to bounties, the blade has its natural sharpness and can permanently get stronger by turning into a black blade, but another factor that might decide rank is its fame/historical value.
Lets say a completely unknown craftsman makes the best sword, well that would be unranked, but if it were to be wielded by a powerfull swordsman it would probably rise very quickly in the ranks. I hope I wrote this in a comprehensible way

@@bryanwoo8415 I think at the release of chapter 1000 or maybe during the summer break last year there was a publishing where the grades of all known swords were revealed and Law's sword wasn't there.
according to shimotsuki, "cursed" blades aren't really a thing, they just kind of have a personality that some people don't mesh well with. A blade being cursed probably doesn't make it more powerful, but i could see a powerful sword being cursed more often (like how enma tested zoro).
in terms of ranking, Oda explained in SBS 71 that it's a cursed sword but has no rank and nothing else about the sword. Honestly given the way law's powers work i wouldn't be surprised if it was just a pretty decent sword. Law was never meant to be a great swordsman and pretty much all he does with kikoku is insert it to conduct electricity or use it to slash things in his room, neither of which require it to be strong (it's pretty neat that it's so long though)

Yoru's blue sword "pearls" are similar to those the world government uses as it's flag and they could represent One Piece's solar systems' dynamics. Its hilt might also be wrapped up for that reason.
