My recruiter asked me if I wanted to be a Marine and I was too awkward to say no. So I joined at 17 straight out of high school haha. I can say though, even going in with no idea what I was doing, the values and experience I gained I could never repay to the institution.

This is from an old school Army guy (1987-2009); The jobs of Army and Marines are similar. Ground Forces; Both have tanks, fighting vehicles, infantry, and support elements. The Marines are vastly smaller in number than the Army. so rely more on hitting hard and not stopping until they get to an objective deep into the enemy's position. Immediately behind the Marine units are Marine support elements (very few so they stick together. Behind them are Army support units that set up camps and logistical bases in vital objectives to keep the entire rear secure for logistical purposes. Some Marines are training in airborne operations, but not nearly the size of the Army. Marine vehicles are designed to hit hard and move quickly (very few heavy tanks, but have naval ships with huge cannons to provide this support). They are mortar units to provide arty support or will use Army Artillery units once they've been set up. The Army is HUGE and its size allows us to perform more missions. We have fast attack units in the form of Cavalry units (self sufficient units that are between a Battalion and Brigade in size) usually these units have a mixture of light and heavy tanks. We also have Air Assault Cavalry which uses helicopters to move light infantry into place. We have the ability to drop vast numbers of airborne/ranger units deeper into enemy territory faster than Marines. The Army combat guys hit first and as they move forward, combat support and service units begin taking control of logistical lines. So, short answer the real difference between the Army and Marines are that the Army doesn't have to share their cots with Sailors. (internal joke among services and outsiders would get punched for pushing to hard on that subject..Marines can be sensitive at times)
"I would yelli back!". LoL. As a veteran I promise you it would only happen once. When I went through basic in the mid 1980's we had a hippie looking kid with us and when the Drill Sgt started screaming at us this kid said, ," Hey dude, give us a break we just got here.". Haha. The instructor stopped yelling and slowly walked over to the kid. He put is mouth up so close to the kids ear and whispered something none of us could hear. I was standing behind and over from that kid and I never heard anything but that kids face went white. He never offered any comments after that and everyone one of us spent at least an hour being punished while cpt hippie had to stand up front and watch. Actually, I think his nickname was Charlie Manson as per the Sgt.
In the seventies were were practically required to smoke, and the exchange had Marlboro for $1.10 per carton. Eleven cents per pack. Now $14 back in my home state = 12627.3% increase, too bad my pay has not gone up that much. My pay is only up 420% since my last year in the service (1979).

I joined because I grew up in the military. My father was in for 28 years, and I had spent half my life in Japan and the other traveling all the states and moving base to base. I enjoyed it. I joined to continue my travels, stories, experiences, and serve my country. It was in my blood to serve. My oldest brother joined for 8 years after I convinced him. My reasoning for joining the Army is because I love the military life. I want to feel the brotherhood, I want to protect people, I want to get dirty, and it promotes a constant healthy lifestyle. 🇺🇲Hooah🇺🇲
As an American who joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17 I can tell you my reasons. 1: i felt that people weren’t going anywhere with their lives so I needed to change in my life and not be like everyone else 2: I wanted a steady income, benefits, and gain life experience 3: “be able to travel the world” 4: I wanted to secure my future and have many doors open for me while I’m young
And alot of people at my recruitment station are doing it for free college and money. But a good amount including me are doing it for our country, freedoms, families, history, ect.🇺🇸
Im currently doing my deployment in South Korea, I joined the Army when I was 18 years old and in the 12th grade. I did it because it was a childhood dream and I wanted to leave the poverty of Philadelphia. I love Camp Humphreys and I especially love the Army. Also, where I did my Basic Combat Training was Fort Jackson South Carolina, and that produces the most soldiers every year, approximately 30,000.
I was actually there when they filmed this. Yes I did not graduate because of a prior injury from me joining. It is more based on tradition than propaganda
I started the join in process 30 days before my 17th birthday so i could join as early as possible. I always wanted to be a soldier and the pay and conditions didnt really cross my mind. 4.5 years later im about to become a staff sergeant and have a wife and house thanks to the army. Its a really good way to become self sufficient without investing in college, but also allows me to live my dream as a combat arms soldier.
God Speed! Remember 90% of boot camp is Fuck-Fuck games, just bare through them and you should be fine. Also what ever happens do not get a profile in basic or AIT unless you want to spend a few extra weeks or months in training.
basically out of highschool, if you have to get a background to get a good decent job. so a college degree or military is a greatway to start building your resume. if you do military first then you also got funding for a college degree
Joined US army at 17, did 5 active as a 68W (Medic), been a reservist since then, 25 now plan on getting a nursing degree and staying in for 20-30 years. Why I joined, I had a sense of duty to my country, I was a 3rd generation service member, my dad was an infantryman and my grandfather was in the navy before him, pay was not a motivating factor. But the benefits I got to use after active service especially college education are great. Yeah, plenty of gay people in the US military, it wasn't allowed until like 6 years ago. The 2 weeks in reception, saw people quit even before training they just realized they couldn't deal with the stress or whatever and quit. Tobacco is allowed, just not in a training environment, big tobacco and energy drink culture in the Army.
I joined for many different reasons. I always liked the military, plus they pay for your college, plus I love the USA and want to do something for this country as well as my community. And the military experience is always a big plus when looking for a job. And I'm not even talking about all other benefits military provides.
@@banegas0411 Of course army is larger, but I kinda doubt that better equipment point and in the recent middle-east conflicts it seems to an outsider that marines have been the spear head and then army comes in to maintain the control. I could be wrong, though.

The US Marine Corps is different because it’s is a department of the navy so they are basic used for beach invasions and quick responses around the world. The Army is more of an main force for the US.
Thanks for correcting it man I said it because my Great Grandpa was with the 264th 66th Black Panther Division in WW2 where he assisted with the amphibious assault during DDay. After the war he was sent to the 11th engineers to make sure the Germans were actually doing work rebuilding their country.

@@randobrando2653 not sure, since they're getting rid of amphibious assault vehicles, not to mention their flyboys are not exactly given nearly enough in the Marines budget to repair those ratty crap jets they got and was the point of the original comment of how it can start fights😁

Most join the military because you can get free college, but a lot also join because of patriotism and history, whether it be family history or the history of where you’re from
People like to join the military for the college benefits, the retirement benefits, and many Americans that join the military are generally very patriotic. I feel as though many Americans have a patriotic backbone to them.
Don't join any combat arms shit, they will beat that out of you. Join something that interests you that has a career waiting for you on the other side. Trust me.

It's an important distinction to make if your talking antique firearms. Many old firearms that were bolt action infantry rifles had an INTERNAL magazine, but you had to use a clip to load it or else you got stuck loading it by hand. At that time a removable magazine was really only available on a few mauser rifles and some really complex swiss make rifles that had a lot of issues.
Yes you can be gay in the US military. I can only speak for the army but I have received nothing but support and at worst apathy from my fellow soldiers. And I am in the infantry a very masculine environment.
@Colin Richey Probably because trans people tend to be depressed. The US military will outright reject you if you have or recently got out of depression. Meps can be strict.
The things to remember millions have gone through it before you and all made it. You have got to remember that it is not personally. It is training to make you into the best you can be.
I joined the Army National Guard because I was curious. 10 of Basic Combat Training (if you could call it that) at Fort Jackson, 14 weeks of Mechanic School at Fort Lee, and then back home serving one weekend a month and two weeks a year, as a Reservist, and I’ve just re-upped. There are volunteers as young as 17 and as old as 35, in a country of over 370 million people getting volunteers is not the issue but rather it’s getting people to stay in. In total, the entire active Military (Regular and Reserves) is comprised of less than .5 percent of the population.
Fort Hood (in Texas) is the biggest one in the US. That was my second and duty station. First one was Fort Drum. I served, overall, from 2007-2012 before getting medically retired. I fought it so I could stay in but it was a no-go. UPDATE: We didn't get snack when we were processing in. That's some new army shit
Hell i was Fort Drum as well went to Fort Stewart afterwards was in 2008-2014. Also ya can confirm that is new army shit. If we got a snack it was so we could vomit it up 20 minutes later just for fun. But never in processing. Also still don't get why they allow people to bring the phones in shits is supposed to be done in solitude.
When I processed into Fort Leonard Wood for Engineer training the only “snack” provided was a tiny styrofoam cup of water and a granola bar that was only about two inches long. It’s more just something to keep you awake I guess
I'm still younger than I need to be to enlist into the military. I want to join the military because it's something I'm generally interested and doing and because I look up to people in the military. The branch I want to join is the Marine Corps, and I hope to someday join MARSOC(Marine Special Operations Command) and will stay in the Marines for hopefully at least 8 years.
"Who's better...Army or marines?" ....welcome to the party pal. It's a long standing argument lol they are different branches. Army, airforce, navy, marines, coast guard. Each serves a different purpose.
William Leonard too bad it’s not my statement then because it’s clearly a quote, but even if it was my statement Russia as a country and population is not defined by one person especially one that’s a borderline dictator
Coming from a family with people who have/do serve, a lot of the time people enlist to honor their family members who have served. It’s a sense of duty to continue to fight for the freedom that our family members before us have fought for. If I was fit for duty, and I knew I could strive in the forces, I would enlist. I want to help protect the country that I love.

The only issue with that 20,000 is that the military takes away more than what it's worth for housing food medical and so on so you get around 500 every two weeks

I'm pretty sure the biggest base in America is Fort Irwin, in the California desert (a little over 18,000 square kilometers). It's used for battlefield training; I was stationed there in the early 1990s. Why I joined the US Army: I was a university dropout and in a moment of clarity fairly unique to my 21 year-old self, I took a hard look at where my "career" was going to take me and I didn't like what I saw. Also, I had just broken up with a redhead.
when I graduated high school, I knew that I couldn't stomach going to college. I craved some sort of break from the crushing monotony of normal every day life. I wanted something more. I didn't want to just submit to the rat race that normal life has turned into. I was enthralled by my fathers tales of military camaraderie and adventure. I wanted to serve the country I loved. The way I saw it, the military was the only path for me. And now I'm an SFC and couldn't be happier. HOOAH!
I joined the Army at 17, I joined because I lived in poverty and it was most likely the only way I was going to get out. And I want to protect my people. Plus there are countless benefits!!!
It's so great watching you build your perspective and being open to cultural differences. It's cool to me, to hear you explain how things are in your country. I enjoy understanding your military culture as you understand ours.

Military bases are ranked in 2 ways: amount of acreage (how much land the base covers) and how many people are employed. For instance, the largest base in USA also has the fewest personnel - White Sands, New Mexico has a little over 3.5 Million acres & about 1000 employees. Joint Base Lewis - McChord (population 209,486 & 414,000 acres) seems to be the largest in terms of personnel and physical size. The metrics vary depending upon source, as well. Some list population and others list employees. Obviously these are different as population would include a troop's family members living on base vs employees which could be counting civilian employees, as well as military. Either way the sources I've found have not listed a break down of personnel vs population and the terms may be open to interpretation. However, there are a number of sources available that get into specifics.
I joined for the experience, I went to Iraq in 09/10 and it was a defining moment in my life. I have a young man stationed at Ft. Polk that joined for the experience as well and 5 years after he gets out I expect he will have a positive view of his time in service.
(I have never been in the military) From my personal experience, a lot of people join the military because they're family has been in the military and they grew up around military personnel. Others feel like they're life hasn't moved where they wanted it to. It's all about actually doing something in life.

I joined the US Army as an MP in 2006. This video showed me how insanely different the Army is now. There was no "changing your mind" period. When you signed your name on the contract, you were in. If you tried to quit, you were forced to continue. If you refused to continue, most people were persuaded to stay, but if you still refuse, you are sent to jail. "Marines vs Army" A question people will literally fight over but in the end it doesn't mean anything on the field we have each others back.
I had marine recruiters come to my school and they said that a marine is better than an army ranger
@@deet2440 Thats funny. And by ranger to you mean RANGER bat. Or ranger school qualified. Big difference. Ranger bat requires going through RASP which is extremely hard. And then to stay in ranger batt you have to goto ranger school. And to be an NCO in ranger bat you goto rasp 2. Its all talk. They are lying.
@@Crusade6539 Sounds like someone doesn't know what they're talking about...
@@shawnclement9416 Marines won't even have tanks pretty soon

The instructor stopped yelling and slowly walked over to the kid. He put is mouth up so close to the kids ear and whispered something none of us could hear. I was standing behind and over from that kid and I never heard anything but that kids face went white. He never offered any comments after that and everyone one of us spent at least an hour being punished while cpt hippie had to stand up front and watch. basically out of highschool, if you have to get a background to get a good decent job. so a college degree or military is a greatway to start building your resume. if you do military first then you also got funding for a college degree
Fort Bragg NC is the largest in the nation by population

There are websites to help you out, I would post links, but I'm not sure they are allowed or not. Please remember, US Veteran, or from another country... someone out there loves and cares about you... Take care.
Edward Nigma (US Army Cold War Veteran, and Grumpy Old Drill Sgt.)
Thank you not only for your service but also with this information that is very valuable to everyone especially with service members
Airborne All The Way Drill Sgt!
My DI's were bad ass MFers!
Our Platoon Sgt was a 173bgd Vet from Vietnam.
Thank you Drill Sgt! I was raised as an Army brat. But, my family has people in every branch, both men and women. My stepfather was Tank Commander who taught Abrams classes at Ft. Knox. Thank you for being attention to the plight of our Veterans! I have lost all three of my parents. 2 due to neglect @ the VA hospital in Phoenix AZ. My father never adjusted back to civilian life. And ended his life with alcohol. We really need a better system that helps them adjust to civilian life. I hear there are a few programs. I wonder if that wouldn't be something we could address. My husband is also a Veteran. I really worry about our Vets. Right now! Have you heard anything about how they are being affected? My brother has been having issues with doctors during the Covid problem.
Its a bit different now lol. Drils aren't masters at everything they do. Most get put on orders to attend DS School without requesting and the Army Voluntells them how to train and instill discipline.
Hooah!
Joining the Army 1st infantry to serve, get away from family, get through retirement easily, don't have to pay med Bill's, and many other things sooooo ya.
CreepySlothOmega Gaming oh ya Big Red 1 Ft Riley KS
The cat in the intro 😂
I’m only 15 but I am going to join the army when I’m 18 and out of highschool. I want to join because I know that it will make me better.
I joined when I was 17 im currently 19, I joined because I felt like I had something to prove to myself as well as since I was smaller I always looked up to my uncle who was in the infantry so I too wanted to be in the infantry. That on top of the fact that I wanted to serve my country and the college tuition was just icing on the cake.
lol bring back memories that barber cut my hair when i was at benning!
Agonized_ Ranger mine you! Back in 2010!
Marines is a separate branch from the army just like how we have Navy, coast guard, and air force. Army is the biggest branch, and marines is department of navy
Don't forget the Space Force.
@@GlitchGalaxyXXX yea the space force....
@@d3snappy621 The Space Force.... Hmm.... Let's put Musk in charge of it. NASA could do a better job.
@@GlitchGalaxyXXX I'm with ya, not a fan of the space force maybe because it's new but I feel like it's the most pointless branch
@@d3snappy621 It's pointless because they are a department of the Chair Force.
I really like the Estonia flag colors
The reason behind the colors is cool too
I too am in the US Army Reserve. I feel you. And yes you can be gay or have any other sexual preference in the US Army.
Do they allow transgenders? If so... Oh boy, gulp, yikes!
@@wargamer5199 Yes you can be although I think its some sort of modified duty and its pretty recent.
@@monarchis2935 Transgender folks serve in the same spots as everyone else
yomama isaniceperson my bad
For my dad and uncle (and cousins more recently ), it was combo of reasons: Patriotism, educational opportunities after service (GI Bill to help w/ tuition), and possibly getting away from bad family situations …
I’m 17 and going to fort Benning in a few months as a 19D (Cav Scout) I cant speak for everyone, but I’m going into the army to serve my country, just felt like it was my civic duty.
Forgot to say I graduated two and a half months ago
The government sends recruiters to every high school and make it sound amazing secondly yes you can be gay in the military but no matter your sexual preference you can have no relationships with someone else in the millitary
That is not true at all. You can date other military members. They cannot be a part of your Chain of Command and/or be an officer/enlisted, or something like that. As long as it maintains the order of things and is completely consensual, it's perfectly fine.
@@ravex24 you mean the left hand Jill right...Lmao
@@ayenull4371 I mean I met my wife on my ship and made my son under my Mk-15 Phalanx mount off the coast of Pakistan and Iran and there wasn't shit they could do about it except send her home. Obviously wasn't married at the time, as that you can't do, but you get the picture.
Litsen of course there are gay people in the military there are gay people everywhere, yes sometimes it sucks it's going to suck I'd be lying if I said other wise, but when you go though shitty times, and you persevere there is not a better feeling in the world.
Let me tell you a story, Afghanistan two years ago, I was a CPL and we were about to storm a building when we spot an EOD(a vehicle which is made to explode) heading our way, well, one fire team and no means to stop it, we were able to get everyone inside a nearby building right before we were hit, my squad leader was decapitated before we could get behind cover and I was knocked back breaking several bones, according to the other marines. Yes major loss, yes, it SUCKED, there are no words to describe those things but, I was smiling, smiling because I knew that thanks to him, all of our marines survived and suffered minor injuries. So yes it sucks but you know what, there's no other place I rather be. And that man, is my hero till this day.
i joined because i was homeless and they were the only ones hiring
Hope your well now
@@bravo6959 well enough, retired (medical) a few years ago

I joined the US Army as an MP in 2006. This video showed me how insanely different the Army is now. There was no "changing your mind" period. When you signed your name on the contract, you were in. If you tried to quit, you were forced to continue. If you refused to continue, most people were persuaded to stay, but if you still refuse, you are sent to jail. Refusing an order gets you sent to jail.
We also weren't allowed to have cell phones, books, iPods, CD players, MP3 players or anything of the sort. It's crazy how much things have changed.
We weren't even allowed to eat the dessert portion of our MREs. We had to throw them away in front of the Drill Sergeants.
I joined the U.S Army in 2006, because I always wanted to be in the army to follow in my fathers footsteps and also to help with college since I came from the poor. I really enjoyed being enlisted kinda wish I had not got out currently trying to rejoin. Starting MOS was 92R but had to re-class to a 92Y because I injured my knee.
