When I listened to this for the first time the line 'If you care to find me, look to the western sky!' I almost fell over. This song is a better origin story than Oz the Great and Powerful.
AS much as I like it better with her born from green elixcer instead of eating an apple, the reason why I think they're equally good is their both visually beautiful and have a teeny bit similar dark but occasionally funny tone.
Street Deacon The way she sings is very unhealthy, she screams instead of belting. It’s why she can’t riff some notes in this song, like a lot of other Elphaba’s do. She also is constantly out of breath, and has to slide up to notes at the climax instead of hitting them.
What's particularly interesting about the style of Wicked is its scale. Every song (even the quiet ones) feels so BIG and grand. That's probably thanks to Stephen Schwartz, the composer. He worked on The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Pocahontas (Disney) and The Prince of Egypt. This guy can bring on the emotions.
