"Too long I've been afraid of losing love, I guess I've lost. Well if that's love, it comes at much too high a cost" -- nothing has meant more to me than this.
I can belt it in my Mixed/falsetto. Sounds like a Belt but the technique is kinda how Lady Gaga Sings Shallow. Lots of space in the mouth and singing the notes in a clear "Wow" tone to help get pitch accuracy and belting out. And then switch to lyrics while trying to maintain an open vowel shape
When I listened to this for the first time the line 'If you care to find me, look to the western sky!' I almost fell over. This song is a better origin story than Oz the Great and Powerful.
AS much as I like it better with her born from green elixcer instead of eating an apple, the reason why I think they're equally good is their both visually beautiful and have a teeny bit similar dark but occasionally funny tone.
Street Deacon The way she sings is very unhealthy, she screams instead of belting. It’s why she can’t riff some notes in this song, like a lot of other Elphaba’s do. She also is constantly out of breath, and has to slide up to notes at the climax instead of hitting them.
What's particularly interesting about the style of Wicked is its scale. Every song (even the quiet ones) feels so BIG and grand. That's probably thanks to Stephen Schwartz, the composer. He worked on The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Pocahontas (Disney) and The Prince of Egypt. This guy can bring on the emotions.
So we're gonna act like we don't all lip sync "and nobody in all of oz, no wizard that there is or was, is ever gonna bring me down," while thinking about our haters and naysayers? lmao okay. Chills every time!
I can listen to this constantly, it is so good, Indina is amazing and it is so enjoyable to hear such an empowering song and all the subjects it's touches upon.
BLTKellys While you have a strong point, and I actually agree with you, it's not as if we all have to go as far as Elphy did. I wanna defy gravity but I don't wanna fly solo.
I know what you mean. Wicked brings me back to my early teens when I was getting interested in theatre. Plus I have been wanting a master class from Ms. Menzel a little long before Frozen took her stardom to the next level.

The Voice brought me here! It's been ten years since I saw this spectacular show at the Pantages. Defying Gravity has to be one of the most powerful Act One finales I've seen in a musical!
Gives me chills every time. Especially the parts where it says to take a message back to,those who'd ground her, and the part about the wizards at the end. So pretty! 😭❤😍
WackyBisexual That's a shame. No one thought about doing the movie animated so they could round up as much of the original cast as possible? I'm sure Idina and Kristin at a minimum would have agreed to that...

"And if I'm flying solo, at least I'm flying free" "and nobody, in all of Oz, no wizard that there is, or was, is ever gonna bring me down!" favourite lines from the entire character. I watched the live performance three days ago, and at these points you could feel the Elphaba's devestation and determination. Groundbreaking musical!
I just saw Wicked this pass weekend. Was my 1st Broadway directed play! I had heard about Wicked long before I actually saw it, even listened to the songs when watching animatics on RUclips. Defying Gravity was one of them, and the play just blew me away with this song! It's my fav
I just saw this show last night in Tempe. What a priceless experience. I love it. Best show ever. I bet Ill see it 19 more times and that's only if it stops touring.
I watched Wicked on Broadway in 2013 for my tenth birthday. It was my first time in New York and my first play, it was truly magical. I'll never forget it. Thanks to it, I'm a Broadway/ theatre geek lol
Almost started crying after this was performed when I saw the musical last year 😭😍...god bless those who got to witness it when it was Indina herself, I would've been on the floor.
I am imagining the end of the first movie: Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba, high in the air on her broom, belting out the last note loud and clear, smash cut to credits.
I've seen Eden and Megan ten years ago at the Pantages. Sometimes I wish I can go back to 2003 and see the original Elphaba and Glinda live and in person.
Laura Elvin Funny how both their roles switched. Kirsten became Maleficent. Idina became Elsa. Edit: just realized that the original animated Maleficent had green skin. And Elsa has blonde hair.
I went to London on the 17.2.16 for my mum and sister's birthday. After the show I was speechless it was so good. If there was a show that I was aloud to see every night, it would be wicked. I felt like all of the actors were amazing ecxpecially Alphaba and glinda
+Amber Hargers It was a joke...like how she corrects everyone in the beginning of the show because they keep calling her Glinda...I'm bad at jokes, I guess 😔
I'm in tears at getting the news that one of my dearest friends has finally decided to divorce her abusive husband. This song came to mind and it's so liberating to anybody that has stayed down because they felt people were not going to think well of them break this shackles and run. And hear this song.
If there were ever a time in history to not be paired off with a person that is dangerous to your soul, it is now. Be smart and be decisive and look for support. Times are way too precarious to be legally attached to people that could be our downfall. Bless every courageous soul who ran a higher ground without looking back.
THIS IS THE BEST SONG EEEEVVVVEEEEERRRRR the end is INCREDIBLE LIVE WATCHED IT LONDON NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I LITINE I STILL GET CHILLS SHE IS AWSOMEEEEEEEEEEEEE
This song. This song started it all. This song led me to become a theater addict. And now I’m proud to say I’m a lead in a musical, one of my lifetime goals since I discovered this song.
We use to get shouted at by our music teacher. She couldn't play this without us singing. That last bit in the belt range is such fun when there's about 10 of you singing lmao
I had a neighbor who was a real bitch and we kind of hit it off before she moved and I told her I was interested in the wicked story. She left the book on my door step with a goodbye note. The last two chapters had been ripped out.
The end of this song was absolutely INCREDIBLE live
I know right?! I just saw it tonight and I still have goosebumps...
yes
Clarissa Bown same I saw it on broadway
Jojo717 true I saw it on broadway though!!!!!!!
I want to see this play again
No matter how many times I listen to this song, I always get chills
so do I my friend.
same!!
me too!!!
I got the chills while reading this

"Too long I've been afraid of losing love, I guess I've lost. Well if that's love, it comes at much too high a cost" -- nothing has meant more to me than this.
I agree :)
my favourite part of the song !!
Read this as it played XD
Arielle Burkett 100 % !!!
Those last notes... to hit them when not belting is hard, to hit them when belting takes serious talent
Snromance agreed
I can belt it in my Mixed/falsetto.
Sounds like a Belt but the technique is kinda how Lady Gaga Sings Shallow. Lots of space in the mouth and singing the notes in a clear "Wow" tone to help get pitch accuracy and belting out. And then switch to lyrics while trying to maintain an open vowel shape
I've tried many times and I simply cant! Makes me cry every time! Fantastic song x
Hitting the notes both ways are easy
Belting like when Dad gets the belt and whips you?
When I listened to this for the first time the line 'If you care to find me, look to the western sky!' I almost fell over. This song is a better origin story than Oz the Great and Powerful.
I actually think Wicked and OZ are on par with each other
Manuel Orozco I'd like to hear your reason.
AS much as I like it better with her born from green elixcer instead of eating an apple, the reason why I think they're equally good is their both visually beautiful and have a teeny bit similar dark but occasionally funny tone.
Oz the Great and Powerful sucked
Wicked is where its at
I got to be one of the munchkins at the end of this song that does the "Look at her! She's wicked!" thing and it was THE BEST THING EVER.
Link Henderson wow! That’s so cool
Like on broadway
I'm jealous...
Wow
I got to be onstage when I rolled in the sets
Saw this last night and I could see it again a hundred more times, best show I have ever seen.
+TheUnholyEmperor me too!
This and Le Mis are at a tie for me😂😂😂
yes me to
Its way better live. The ending of this song knocks you off your feet. This is my favorite musical. Second favorite is Hairspray.
How many have you seen?
That final "I hope you're happy" gets me every time.
KimeiJoanna omg same
This is the only song I've heard from this musical and my gaydar is going off. And my gaydar is shit.
queerfanderofmusical s You must read way too deeply into things then. There’s nothing gay about their relationship. Period.
Mizako 96 yes finally someone said it its just a great friendship
tori brooke There’s literally nothing online stating that other than tumblr headcanon blogs but ok 💀
She absolutely destroys the high notes in this recording it's insane.
@@beccachaddock7006 😂😂😂😂
😀
Becca Chaddock At least Idina can still sing beautifully
She sounds like a chipmunk
Street Deacon The way she sings is very unhealthy, she screams instead of belting. It’s why she can’t riff some notes in this song, like a lot of other Elphaba’s do. She also is constantly out of breath, and has to slide up to notes at the climax instead of hitting them.
The finale beginning from 4:30 never fails to give me chills. One of the main reasons why Defying Gravity ranks upon my top character themes ever.
This song helped me get out of an abusive relationship. And I cried when I saw it live.
Saw it live as i was going thru brain cancer treatment. It was emotional, and inspiring. Know how you felt
Good on you!! :D

Good for you, I hope you're happy now

Not every day you find a Broadway score half pop and half symphonic

Right?!? That's exactly what I end up doing every time I listen to this song!
I do that thinking about my thesis supervisor hehe
Implying I don't lip sync the whole thing complete with dance movements.
I fucking sing it. It's such a wonderful song.
while you playing..I totally just did that...
When you wanna buy broadway tickets:
“Well if that’s Love it comes at much to high a cost”
Anyone agree?
Lightblinder ! Me
And don't get me started on the plane tickets TO Broadway...
Lucky me I live in New Jersey!
Lightblinder ! And I live in... South Korea...
Isabella Gu I will send my prayers
For some reason I really love 5:28 "I hope your happy" because her voice just sounds so amazing
The drummer is really amazing too. Brings everything together and keeps the hype.
funkmastafog Sounds like something a drummer would say
I can listen to this constantly, it is so good, Indina is amazing and it is so enjoyable to hear such an empowering song and all the subjects it's touches upon.

While you have a strong point, and I actually agree with you, it's not as if we all have to go as far as Elphy did. I wanna defy gravity but I don't wanna fly solo.
I thought it was about how you can do anything, no matter what anybody says. You can achieve anything.
I know what you mean. Wicked brings me back to my early teens when I was getting interested in theatre. Plus I have been wanting a master class from Ms. Menzel a little long before Frozen took her stardom to the next level.

I first saw it live two weeks ago in Toronto and I can't stop thinking about it. It was such an incredible experience!
İ saw it many years ago
I love that let it go and defying gravity are both sung by idina and both songs are about breaking free and being yourself we love a rebellious queen😂
Moonlight Cresselia True but Defying Gravity has more nostalgia value for me.
@@manuelorozco7760 i agree completely
Moonlight Cresselia Because Wicked partially got me into musicals.
Defying gravity is fucking bop in comparison
Idina Menzel is the queen, can we all agree on that?
Becca Chaddock lol ikr? It makes my voice hurt to sing like her

The bit at the end where it’s like:

There's going to be a movie based on Wicked coming out next year, I hope this song is going to be in the movie.
Tony parra
I'm sure it will, but too bad the original cast won't be :(
Without Defying Gravity there would be no Wicked. I am thinking Maddie Ballio from Hairspray Live or Anna Kendrick should be Elphaba.
There also better be popular... I love t popular so much
Theyve been saying for years that they were going to make a movie, if it happened thatd be great

This song. This song started it all. This song led me to become a theater addict. And now I’m proud to say I’m a lead in a musical, one of my lifetime goals since I discovered this song.
I'm doing this for music GCSE and I always sing along to 'although i cant imagine howwwwww'
We use to get shouted at by our music teacher. She couldn't play this without us singing. That last bit in the belt range is such fun when there's about 10 of you singing lmao
i just got to see this in the west end and. oh my god. words can’t even describe how incredible this was
I had a neighbor who was a real bitch and we kind of hit it off before she moved and I told her I was interested in the wicked story. She left the book on my door step with a goodbye note. The last two chapters had been ripped out.
My God I am getting chills!!!! I can't believe it's been years since this has been here. I grew up with this song
"I can't want it" always moves me, you can hear the pain 😢

Honestly, Wicked is what started my musical theater obsession .
Same!
Me three
If someone can see the act one finale of wicked and still say they don't enjoy theater they're a psycho
I’ve been replaying 5:14 and onwards for the last 30 mins on repeat. So addicting
Elphaba: And if I'm flying solo, at least I'm flying free.

Watched this last night. Excellent!
I have a very strong feeling that Margaret Hamilton would be so proud:)
If she was still alive yes but you never know.
