Not to be _that_ guy, as this is a great list of games, but November 21, 1990 was the SNES/SFC's release date in Japan. We got the Super Nintendo on August 23, 1991 here in North America, eight months later. Startropics, Kabuki Quantum Fighter, The Krion Conquest, Metal Storm, Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom, Kiwi Kraze, Totally Rad, Whomp 'Em, Faria: A World of Mystery and Danger, and [possibly] the Lone Ranger (its exact date isn't known other than being Aug. '91), all great late-in-life NES releases, but still released before the SNES did here.

@@Judgment I remember they had only 2 games for sale at launch, F-Zero and PilotWings. My friend and I beat SMW that same weekend it came out. To me gaming seemed different then, but in a good way.
He mistook the Japanese release date for the American. It happens; simple mistake.
Nov. 21st 1990 was the Japanese release date 😊. U.S. release date was Aug 23rd 1991.
The *Super Famicom* came out in Japan in 1990. The Super NES proper was released in August of 1991.
IDK Why he gave the Japanese release date but we didn’t get it here in the United States until August 1991! In 1990, we were just getting our hands on Super Mario 3 and weren’t even thinking about the SNES.

I remember in the SUPER NINTENDO documentary parents wondering, "Why the hell would I go buy this when my kid can't play the Nintendo games on it that we just bought?" Well, Nintendo didn't abandon you. They remained faithful to the system until the end.
You can easily connect both systems to the same TV...in fact the back of the box and manual encourage it!
Some great NES games from that time that you didn’t mention were MC Kids, Darkwing Duck, Yoshi, Yoshi’s Cookie, Mega Man 4, 5 and 6, and probably the best one of all: Kirby’s Adventure.
SNES didn't release in the US until fall 1991.
whoah now. The Super Famicom launched in Japan November 1990. The Super Nintendo (that John is holding up) launched in the USA November 1991.

Ducktales 2, Shatterhand and Mighty Final Fight are games I consider myself fortunate enough to have played back then, and the praise is well-placed.
So many hidden gems came out in that post-1991 NES era when all the excitement and coverage had moved to the SNES. But at that point, developers had gotten a really good understanding of what the NES could do and, the good ones, leveraged that for some fantastic games. I think I'm gonna add a few of these to my Retroid later today now. Thanks John 👍👍

I still have StarTropics in the box (lost the map sadly) because it was the game my parents bought me to to help take the sting off of their refusal to buy me "another Nintendo."
Great game thou, prolly helped with that "sting" luckily I was able to have both systems so got to enjoy games on both😁

I never really understood the argument of backwards compatibility. Did people not know you can hook multiple consoles to the same television? If you want to play old NES games, just have the NES hooked up so you can play them.
@@catsaregovernmentspies Sure but the same could be said, more or less, for DVDs. There's a good reason Blu-ray players are backwards compatible, nobody wants an extra box that runs like 15 year old hardware if they can avoid it.

That is not the US release date, It is the Japanese release date. I know, because I remember getting it for Christmas in 1991, right after it came out. And I also specifically remember that Star Tropics was released before it. And regarding Kiwi Kraze, it was already out even before the wrong release date for the SNES. I remember, because I played it as part of a contest held in May 1990, so this game was out in the US at least 15 months before the SNES. Whomp Em was also played as part of the same contest, but not for my age bracket, so it also long precedes the SNES.
Lots of great games on this list, Kick Master in particular is one I really enjoy. But some other post-SNES releases for the NES that were very good:
Mega Man 4-6, Jetsons, Dragon Warrior IV (though Quest IV debuted in Japan before the SFC), Panic Restaurant, Adventure Island 3, Adventures of Lolo 3, Bucky O Hare, Fire N Ice, Gargoyle's Quest 2, TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project, and of course Kirby's Adventure.
Fire N Ice came out in March 93 and remains a personal favorite. Battletoads/Double Dragon June 93, another gem. Zen The Intergalactic Ninja 93 as well; awesome year for hidden late gems on the NES!
That Title Screen for the Flintstones made me think of those flintstones sherbert push pops in the 90s.
A lot of these later Nes games, are the ones that have held up the best.
Lot of fond memories with Shatterhand. As hard as it is, it does play fair and you can always experiment with different power ups.
Dragon Fighter does not hold up, but it was used as the main inspiration for Shovel Knights Art.

Metalstorm, Shatterhand, and Vice are all great games! I got all of them when Blockbuster was selling off old rental copies of their NES stuff.
These late NES really looked like they pushed the hardware to the limit - really good use of the available colour palette
Lone ranger was surprisingly good. I remember renting that game thinking it was just more tv to videogame crap but I played it whole weekend. And dragon fighter had the coolest concept ever - change into a dragon anytime

Vice Project Doom is one of my favorite NES games. There's so much variation you'll never get bored playing it: platforming, shooting, driving... and also several different weapons, great graphics and tunes
The NES version of Wario's Woods is a solid option as well. It's slightly different than the SNES version but a great puzzler.
In animal crossing for the game cube you could unlock a nes with wario woods and you could play the game with a second person in another controller port on the game cube. There were other games too but I don't think they were multiplayer.

I finished Princess Tomato a couple of years ago after you recommended it, Mr. Riggs. I’m also beyond tickled that you mentioned Faria! I rented it as a kid and made it a personal goal in adulthood to tackle it again. I managed to complete it about five years ago ;)
I miss the kind of box art Princess Tomato has. You can tell someone hand-crafted physical miniatures, posed them, and took pictures with the correct lighting. Nowadays all they do is pose in-game models!
Several folks are saying SNES released in 1991, not 1990, which makes more sense. Not sure why Google would LIE to me!

I love Kabuki Quantum Fighter. Awesome Look, awesome Music and a tight Difficulty. It may be too hard when you play it the first Time but it´s definitely worth the try to master it.
I've played a bunch of those because they were featured on hidden gems lists. It's really a shame that so many great games came out a bit too late to be noticed. KickMaster and Metalstorm are particularly good.
Whomp 'Em was one of my favorite games as a kid. When I started collecting games from my childhood, Whomp 'Em was one game I had to get. Happy I have a boxed copy for myself. Love to break out out every now and then. Sadly, I have never been able to beat it. I have made it to the last level but wound up getting stuck in an endless bounce loop.

Bruh that lone ranger game was red dead before red dead. I had a SNES and my mom's bought that game for me for the same Christmas I got my SNES and let me tell you....... after beating Mario, I didn't play my SNES until Star Wars came out

I used to rent Whomp 'Em Shatterhand all the time! Vice Project Doom was one I bought cause it was cheap at KB Toys and instantly loved it. Some solid titles in this video.

One of the last ones out on the NES... Zoda's Revenge (Star Tropics 2). Obviously Kirby was good too.
Robin Hood: prince of thieves was released in Dec of 1991. I had and played my NES until I got a playstation in 1998. My best friend had a sega but I was very grateful for the massive library available on the nes.
Kickmaster had some killer graphics for sure, but I think Batman: Return of the Joker impressed me most on NES. That one almost looked 16 bit in places.
One NES game I can recommend that came out during the SNES era would be "Rockin' Kats", which was even featured in episodes of the Nickelodeon game show "Nick Arcade".
Sad story about the Flinstones game. Growing up, we were allowed to rent one NES game each week. My brother rented Flinstones and chipped away at it all week. It was hard but on the very last day, he'd made it to the end. The problem was, our mom was ready to leave, which meant we had to take the game back to the rental store. But my brother was on the last boss, so mom let him have a bit more time.
We had a little stand for our TV in the bedroom, but the Nintendo was resting on the floor. And nearby, I was also on the floor, playing with my action figures over in the corner, 'cause watching my brother repeatedly try to beat the game was kind of boring. So finally, my brother was like, "Brian! I beat the game!" So in my excitement to see the game's ending, I jumped up from the floor, but I accidentally kicked my toy batmobile, which rolled across the floor, and hit the Nintendo's reset button. The ending screen went blank and the game rebooted.
And by then, our time was up and mom made us get in the car to buy groceries and return the game to the rental store.

Once I reached my 20's and RUclips was a thing, I did eventually e-mail my brother a let's play of Flintstones, so we could finally watch the ending. 😆
I remember when the SNES came out, there really weren't that many games for it. Once you were done playing Super Mario and Pilotwings, well...
I got my nes in 92, the kid living next to me got hers in 95. And she had the tiny toons, Flintstones and DuckTales 2 games. I got mine because my parents couldn't afford a babysitter and the girl next door would come and play. And we would have a free babysitter.
Didn't get a SNES until 1997, so definitely played and owned many of the later NES games like Mega Man V, Star Tropics 2, Tetris 2, and Gargoyles Quest 2 to name some of the ones I owned and enjoyed. Rented some of the ones you chose.

I got my snes pretty much as soon as you could get one in the USA (got mine Xmas of 91) and my nes was completely forgotten about 😂it would have been devistating to get a nes game back then no matter of it was good or not
Shatterhand was a lot like Mega Man games. You could choose which stage you wanted to go to, and as mentioned in the video, bosses were like the robot masters where you learned their pattern to beat them.

I remember the Super Nintendo Release date here in the States was during the summer or fall of 1991, but I guess you're referring to the Japanese Release date which most definitely was late 1990. I really like this list of games, I'm definitely going to try a few of them out. One game that is also really good and came out during the last days of the NES was Moon Crystal, with great animation, graphics and gameplay. Since there were over 250 titles that came out for the NES after the SNES release, you should do another one of these. Great video as always John!!

Wow excelent list of games, I remember seeing Totally Rad at the game store and based on the title I thought the game was a Skateboard game and 22 years later after seeing your video I realized it has nothing to do with skaeboard
I'm sure there are already a lot of posts about this but the Super Famicom came out in Japan in November of 1990. The Super NES was released in North America in August of 1991.
At the time, the SNES was the next generation of gaming consoles, but when I play SNES games now on the virtual console or on my switch, I see that much of the thinking about game design was very similar, just yet with better graphics and sound on a 16-bit console. When I play the SNES mini or emulation now most of the games feel very very similar to the NES counter parts just slightly more advanced.
There are, of course, exceptions to this, because Super Mario world was next Mario game and was so great to play but it really wasn’t until games like Star Fox that felt so far beyond 8-bit, consoles. Many early SNES games were basic even if they utilised mode-7 well

4:05 Whomp 'Em was actually the US localization of Saiyuuki World 2. Saiyuuki World 1 was the japanese NES port of Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
Cowboy Kid is legitimately my favorite NES game, and my love for Legend of the Mystical Ninja may be tied to that. But, I used to have a copy for the longest time, and when I found out that it sold for pretty insane prices now, I went to find it, and my grandmother who has never thrown anything away, ever, had thrown away all of my NES games... So now it is gone forever, lost to time and memory.

Star Tropics hands down in my top 5 favorite nes games. I did not know it came out after the snes. And to be honest, when I did get my Snes, I still played my NES
There are some real solid games in this list. I remember many of these games, and I remember playing many of them often. I must have been playing the NES far past the 16 bit days.

Interesting topic, and a sad story in many ways.
By this time, NES programmers got even better, cartridge chips brought higher quality, memory gave bigger and better games, control got smoother, graphics and sound improved more, and all around better command of the NES hardware was acheived.
Just when the NES was producing its arguably best ever stuff, and ready for more, was just when the general public started caring less and less about it.
A sad story indeed. Hopefully this video finally gives these games the much more deserved attention than they got.
People will talk Zelda and SMB, but some of the most fantastic NES games are right here in this video.
Oh damn, I totally forgot about Kabuki Quantum Fighter! Yes, a game where you play as a Kabuki actor who kills stuff with red hair. There's no way it could NOT be awesome.

Personally, my favorite Mega Man games are four, five, and six. The NES did have several great games come out in the second half of the console life mostly after the SNES was released.

The only issue is that the SNES did not launch until September 1991 in the US. However, you do have the correct date for the Super Famicom Japan release. Back then Japan was a year to 18 months ahead of the US.

A really awesome game to this day. Though any late release Capcom title is from Gargoyles Quest 2, Megaman 6, and Darkwing Duck among others except Gold Medal 92 , just couldn't get into that one.

To be fair any late Capcom or Taito release could have been automatically on the list from the Megaman series to Panic Restaurant. I personally thought Power Blade, Gun Nac, or Darkwing Duck would've made the cut.
Princess Tomato is a masterpiece. I’ve wanted to, for a long time, try making a 16 bit remake. That or at least make my own video review if it. It’s so under appreciated.
The SNES launched 8/23/91 in the US. The launch date proposed at the beginning of the video is the Japanese launch date for the Super Famicom.

Pretty certain that Princess Tomato released ahead of the SNES. That's how I remember it, as my friend and I rented it one weekend, and we stopped renting NES games once the SNES released. Wiki says Princess Tomato released Feb. 91, SNES released Aug 91.
Kirby was at least a game that I got introduced to after we got an SNES. I'm not sure if the actual timeline. But it held up pretty well at the time I recall.
metal storm I remember renting back in the day, was kinda fun! will have to track down the re-release! also rented tiny toons, I feel like that one was heavily influenced by SMB3, a pretty fun platformer. ducktales 2 I should really sit down and play, I just picked up my second copy of the disney afternoon collection on series s! some of these I still gotta get around to, maybe next time I get the itch to add to the retro collection since it's been a bit since I got anything for NES!
Kirbys Adventure. Released in 1993 and in my opion one of the best games for the NES.
