Grown in Australia and Canada, processed and packed in Sri Lanka, sold in the UK and the Middle East. That's a long trip.
True, but at least they're long lasting and travel in bulk, so it's a pretty efficient trip by slow container ship.
My lentils have done more travelling than I did in 2020!
Hmm, this makes me wonder if the lentils in the USA come straight from Canada. 🤔
@@bsteven885 they most likely also come from sri lanka or other parts of the world as processing may be cheaper there but some brand may be usa based
there arent really that many processed foods that havent been all around the world at some point becaus production is cheaper that way
After all that I am left asking "so how does 'the roller' actually split the lentil" 😒
All legumes are actually in two halves so evenly applied pressure will open the natural crack/seam
@@cassieoz1702 🙏
didn't you listen to the video? It was explained.
@@watchgoose Yes I did, it was stated, not explained.
My guess is that the rollers are actually pairs of rollers, but the two rollers don’t rotate at the same speed. The speed differential creates shearing forces that separate the halves. (I saw this on some other product, I forget which.)
So lentil’s to Sri Lankan’s is like tea for the Brits.
Or rice to Hong Kong.
I'm a Sri Lankan and i approve this comment
Even indians
Sri Lanka is into tea as well 🤷🏾♂️
Not going to lie, I’m really enjoying this channel. Would be great if the episodes went a little longer though as I think you guys would do a great job at that!
This was originally aired on TV in Britain, so if you look around you might be able to find the full 1 hour episodes
@@krytenfivetwothreep2485 thanks for that! Had a quick search and finding it difficult to find it! Was it called food unwrapped?
you can only access the full episodes in the uk sadly. i wish I could watch em too
Didn’t quite show the dehusking and splitting.
Yess he traveled so many miles and no answers
Did you want to go into the roller and see for yourself or what?
What kind of oil is used for splitting them?
Best day of the week was lentils day when mom made a whole pot of Lentil stew with all the veg. She would boil it so vigorously that the starch from the potatoes would break down make it like a no meat gravy I literally could eat it everyday
This is all so not informative, it creates more questions than it fails to answer.
_It creates more questions than it _*_fails_*_ to answer_
What logic is this?
@@johndelilo6038 pretty simple. They never explained how the machine splits the lentil in the first place or any explanation for all the other little facts they presented. Pretty freaking simple.
@@fredmench4552 the expression is 'it raises / creates more questions than it answers' -- the 'it *fails* to answer' in your statement is the opposite of 'it answers'
Yeah like why split them in the first place? 🙄
@@aravindbanakar3444 Because the cooking time for split lentils is less than for whole lentils.
"ive never even tasted a lentil" like who r they calling!? poor old Martha down the road
American here, I take the whole brown lentil and just use it in my recipes, usually add them with pearled barley to my bean mix for chili
Love from Sri Lanka !!!
If the lentil is soaked in oil, does that therefore make the unsplit lentils healthier?
I know it's not the same as homemade but Heinz do an amazing lentil soup.
It baffles me that lentils grown in Canada and sold in the UK have to detour to be split in Sri Lanka. How can it not be cheaper to split them in Canada or the UK?
I guess it's no less efficient than sending Jimmy Doherty to Sri Lanka to gather information that could be just looked up on the internet.
Literally India produces and process lentils in huge quantity should import from them would be cheaper too
I just looked at the views of the videos, I'd assumed that it was in its millions. Fair play 👏👏👏 the videos r actually really good, u deserve more views then ur getting
Its a TV show in the UK, not a small youtube channel lol
@@benjo456 yh saw another comment from another video saying its a channel 4 show, but still this type of content still should do well
Half the world’s lentils are grown in Saskatchewan... not even that big a part of Saskatchewan...
as a Canadian thats cool to know thanks
Watching this, it makes me wonder if lentils in the USA come straight from Canada. 🤔
I think so, because I have two bags of split lentils from very different companies and they are both marked as product of Canada. So I guess if they are going to the States they split them at home, and if they are going to the Middle East they stop in Sri Lanka for splitting there.
Man, my mum makes the BEST lentil pizza. Cheese, salami, and a crumbly cheese base. Delicious and great fibre!
What ! We split them in our home in Ethiopia .I Didn't know it was a secret for most people .
I LOVE IT !
To be honest, I’m not sure why they don’t just split them in Canada or Australia seems unnecessary to send them to Sri Lanka and then around the world. It’s all automated so I hardly think it’s a labour cost thing.
The largest Lentil Market’s in the Indian Subcontinent so its probably better to do the final processing there...
They say it’s sent to the UK and the Middle East but a good majority of it stays in Sri Lanka and India I think :/
@@kuyaleinad4195 that does make sense!
Lol, I thought that it was those laundry beads at first 😂 I would never have guessed it’s food
Why did he talk to that lentil market stall holder like they were a child?
So you're claiming that they actually bag wet lentils? REALLY?! No drying process before bagging, eh? Sure you didn't just run out of time to explain the remaining processing because you spent 70% of the duration yammering on about fluffy background stuff?
Lentils with onions and ketchup...Heaven!
Yess now I can make my lentil soup..
Try lentil soup, good healthy and tasty soup.
Why didn't you ask him "Why are lentils split"????
I wonder why they wouldn't import from India instead which is literally right next door, cheaper and the largest lentil producer in The World...
Because they probably aren't as good quality wise.
@@iampotates based on what data?
I'm not saying that's the reason but it could be if they choose to ship in product from way across the world. Buisness folks don't just make financially illogical choices.
India is the second-biggest producer of lentils (after Canada) but also one of the main lentil importers of the world... domestic demand outstrips production, which is not conducive to being a major exporter...
Why are they split
Interesting that Lentil growers in Canada get a reduced priced if they have over a tiny percentage of split lentils in their crop. Yet split lentils seem to be what the market wants.
Different stages of production have different quality standard. Just because the market want wine, doesn't mean it will accept rotten grapes, even though rotten grapes are basically pre-fermented grapes..
How are they actually split. In a roller they would be crushed. Please explain or is it a secret ????
Just started eating lentils, learning😂
I will do that thank you.
jheeeeez that's a lot of work
Yum
I'm guessing Australia and Canada split their own lentils too, no?
How do you cook them?
They are just asking for a dust explosion in that factory, Osha would not be happy
Didn't actually show the split, sad
This shows budget couldn't stretch to him visiting farms in Canada and Australia and then a shop in Dubai then?
very disturbed by the opening scene of the guy just cracking open a wall board-looking material
Don't touch the food sir
Where was the splitting part?
Hi. May I know the Company details. Such as

That elephant used for the showcase was mas malnutrition and died due to cruelty.
So the tiny lentils travel more than average human before being cook 🤔
I always thought all lentils were just split beans.
How Can U Turn Paper To Metal?

Should have asked Hodmedods!
That processing plant going to catch on fire one day or explode from all the fine dust.
That place hasn’t been cleaned since the day it was built.
Why do all this work to split the lentils instead of eating them whole? You chew them anyways...
I am.
Dial mill, messing assemble and total dial mill and from Sri Lanka.
Di.
Al mill operator and assemble machine total.
Why husk and split them?
So they import lentils, then split them. Then ship them out. Ok then hahaa
I wonder what happens to the husks?
they are commonly used for livestock feed.
Why is the lentil split to begin with?
I guess they cook faster. It seems that you can get unsplit red lentils too.
4:00 Should have eaten them there.Maybe he did?
They taste better raw.
If it is so small, why do they have to split it?
So it'll cook even faster
the inside will soften easier into a sort of paste
i guess british don't have a blender at home
@@berkrullah why do you need a blender to split lentils?
@@cassieoz1702 you don't need them split if you're okay with the way your lentils cook -since some recipes require them that way- if you want them to cook faster you can always use a good ol blender. process of splitting them is extra. but i guess it's a british thing. i heard they have pealed bananas and oranges in markets too.
Who would have new they grew in auzi and soorry bud
Only a British person could say they have never eaten a lentil before.
Since Brits are mad on Indian cuisine, that's not even likely

Listen carefully to the telephone conversion in the beginning.
Subtitling someone who is speaking perfectly good English just because of he's accent is kind of offensive.
Dhal
Terrible why just why soaking a lentil in oil for 12 hours and 6 hours in water comes nowhere in comparison to splitting the atom total ridiculous
Because this guy and his gf were probably already on holiday in Sri Lanka - then he asked around something in general - that is why the video is sparse and uninformative - it was off the cuff decision probably - and feeling its inadequacy he put a sensational title on it because he felt a "how lentils are split" video that doesn't even answer that question properly would hurt his ratings. How dare they not wear their masks now my lentils have covid
