Animenz making such good music 10+ years ago, and his covers sounding even better in the present. Shows that even if you were the best in the world, there is always room for improvement.
You should try comparing his pieces with the original pieces. Your analysis is really detailed and understandable, and I would love to see more videos analysing animenz's piano pieces!
I like most of it but i think the first section with the tremolo octaves is a bit too much, if you know what i mean. It loses musicality and seems more to be for showing off.
@@giblegabite929 more than showing off it comes to me like he's being playful with the theme in different ways. Also I know it's a subjective thing but it never loses musicality for me

Love this, I could watch you react to animenz all day haha. I feel like the more you watch him the more you appreciate everything he does on the piano :D
In all of my year studying music theory, I would say that japanese artists are breaking the music standards in terms of the western music industry. The amount of unexpected routes they use to compose is just honestly intriguing, it's like they purposefully use reverse psychology. It would be amazing if you would react to japanese artists, they mostly advertise themselves through anime openings or anime endings. It would not dissapoint you in the least, and I think it would be a good reaction video since it would be interesting to see your analysis in their compositions in the song creation process.
Beeing guest at Your channel I'd say that I couldn't agree more. I know Animenz's arrangements for more than 10 years, and I've learned from him a lot. His arrangements are by default some of the finest pieces of art I've ever stumbled on the Internet (period; I don't want to come into music theory gibberish here). That definitely made me a better pianist. Before I practice a piece I always analyze it - and it helps me a lot to understand what I'm playing, it makes lerning piece by heart so much easier (there is a lot happening in those arrangements). 'My dearest' is one of my favourites (still, close 2nd to 'Kimi no shiranai monogatari'). Tbh I find it one of (if not the most) musically challenging of his arrangements (but also technically not an easy one). / I love Chopin's pieces so the part where he used Chopin's facture is my favourite fragment. / Everything sounds better on Stainway. ;)
Animenz is amazing!!! and also you Matthew, since I discovered your channel I learned so much about music theory and about the piano, so I am grateful for that, thank you!!
Great watch as always! I do kind of wish you could listen to the original versions for these reactions as well. I think a lot of what makes Animenz so amazing is his ability to take the amazing themes these artists create and expand upon them.
Animenz is a classical trained pianist and a registered Steinway artist, he graduated at Rostock conservatory in Germany, he started taking piano lessons at 6 year old, started writing transcriptions of anime op/ed and ost at 19 and now he wrote like more than 150 sheets, been more than 100 concert and have performed in all around the world in over 30 cites, he's an inspiration to all of us pianist !
Watching Animenz play lowkey makes me want to become a musician... fr though, after turning 18 the two paths I was interested in most were becoming either a musician or a game dev, now kinda leaning towards the former
Was really hoping you’d take a look at more of his arrangements, especially kawaki wo ameku, amazing video! Also, not sure if you would do reactions to non piano videos, but I would definitely recommend the original version of kawaki wo ameku by Minami
Lol Im pretty sure these may have been the exact 2 songs I recommend thank you so much. That said you seemed to be pretty intrigued with his 2nd song. Like you said at the end he truly is an amazing pianist. I compare him to a modern day Chopin or Beethoven. But thank you for the video made my day!
Hello mathew, love your videos man, great video, I just have recommendation for a video idea, since your videos help me so much as a pianist, I recommend doing another “levels” video for improvisation , where you could cover different levels of improvisation, how to start and how to advance , thank you for all the work you do.
These are two of my favourite Animenz arrangements, as well as anime songs period. I remember when I tried to learn Animenz' Crying for Rain, gave up, and settled for a much more simplistic version of my own 🤣🤣
I think you said this in the last video, but he doesn't improv his pieces, you can tell by the way they're structured and the very difficult, specific techniques that he uses, definitely pre-arranged. Still incredible and the reason I love his videos; so well thought out and beautifully voiced always!
Nope I'm pretty sure he does improvise, I believe he's said it somewhere in a video, cant remember which though. In order to make these arrangements you kind of do have to improvise first because it wouldn't make sense to just listen to a song and then immediately write a whole arrangement, it's probably a lot easier to improvise the song first by ear and then write, opposed to writing first. I believe he said something like he improvises on the original song until he makes a satisfying finished product. And if i had to guess then after all of that he would probably write it on sheet music. Regardless, improvisation is pretty much always going to be used, I believe the main purpose of arranging is kind of based around improvising of an original song and making it as creative and original as you can. I'm not saying this as like a gotcha though im just saying maybe you were a little misinformed as to what goes on. An easy example would be his Yoasobi- Idol. The beginning of that arrangement includes a pretty difficult improvised element, as well as the chorus and many other parts. As original as it may sound it really is basically one big by ear- improvisation.
@@MilAS829 that makes sense, I just meant he probably doesn't sit down and improv the whole thing in one take, there's obviously written revisions. My fault though!
@@nobleplatter7650 Yup no problem. Just wanted to clarify just in case. I also used to think that he literally just created them and didnt use any improvisational elements but now I know because I started learning some piano myself and figured out some of the terminology
@@MilAS829he doesn’t improvise, at least fully… he makes the arrangement and gets a team of transcribers to transcribe his music afterward to make the sheet. He used to completely make the sheet before playing but he found it too exhausting.
@@erckupazo Like i said it's not really an argument it's just a fact. Lots of his arrangements use improvisational elements. You can argue that the melody and chord progressions aren't improvised as they are given by the original song, but whatever animenz does with those is mostly improvised. If he were to take a chord and arpeggiate it or turn it into fast runs, as he does with a good bit of his arrangements, that would be an improvised element. Again I'll use Idol as an example, the beginning is very obviously an improvised element and includes a very quick right hand arpeggio run up and down the keys. Yes there are original elements in his arrangements but Animenz knows how to make a really good balance of improv-classical- and original elements. Even if he were to write and then play, he would still have to experiment with how it would sound and would probably improvise and touch up certain parts to make it better. In fact there's another good arranger who goes by Akmigone who made a video on how he improvised and arranged his awesome How To Train Your Dragon arrangement.
Amazing video! I'd love to see you react/dissect some more Japanese music like Zutomayo's Study Me. They just do music genres so differently and fresh over there!
What you say about remembering chords as opposed to melodies is pretty funny, because as an opera singer I'm the direct opposite. I can remember any melody easily, but can not for the life of me tell you which chords were used until I see sheet music lol.
There's a lot I'd recommend from Animenz. But an interesting one is his "Grand Escape" cover. Overall, it wouldn't count as one of his top pieces. However, the madness in his mind at the start always blows me away. Any sane person would hear the 2 instruments at the start and spilt em between the 2 hands. Animenz? Naah... man kept both instrumental melodies (2 different melodies on 2 different instruments, both somewhat fast paced) in the right hand and then goes onto play the vocal melody and it's chord accompaniment on the left hand at the same time (functionally playing 3 melodies and 1 accompaniment all at once). It's not impossible or anything just... man heard that and said "I want it all" and so he did. I would also probably recommend "Guren no Yumiya". I'll stop here for now before I recommend half his catalogue.
6:45 why does the entire piano's keys move to the left a bit? wtf? the piano itself didn't move, but ALL of the keys just shifted to the left... how tf...
animenz didn't call Crying for Rain the spiritual successor to his Unravel arrangement for nothing lmao, this left hand is a nightmare, I gave up on learning this arrangement for now
I think you should react to Animenz Bios and Merry Go Round of Life arrangements, but ill be happy with whatever is chosen because I love all of his arrangements.
Request for reaction to SLSMusic! He's another anime pianist who is very good at reharmonizing, style switching and medley arranging. You can go to his 1. Demon slayer OP Jazz version or 2. Weight of the World 12key medley. 3. YOASOBI medley (JFYI: the second one is actually game OST rather than anime music, and YOASOBI is a Jpop vocalist-composer duo)
Well, makes sense hard to remember as based on actual anime opening songs, so without knowing the song it'll be a bit hard but with musical theory & progression especially with respect to anime Original Sound Tracks (OSTs) would probably make sense
I would recommend reacting to phyxinon, he/she is very skilled with arrangement and piano playing. My personal favorite are "Weathering with you" and "Wings of piano"
