    Great admiration for Kevin, 110 caps and always gave 100% for his country. That clown O'Neill could've avoided all this simply by bringing Rice on for the last 2 minutes of a competitive match. Then it would've been done & dusted, and Rice or Southgate wouldn't have even thought about it. It would have been sorted there and then. O'Neill was a total disaster for Irish football in every area he was involved in.

      Meaning what? You could mean that Gaelic football is true Irish football but given you're replying to a soccer video I'm presuming you're referring to non-Irish playing for Ireland? If so...Germany, France, Spain and England are all world cup winners. They've also all had non-native born players play for them. In last years world cup final, 4 players in the starting elevens (1 French, 3 Croatian) were not born in the countries they represented. Are you saying that Ireland should limit themselves to playing by different rules than the football elite?

    • @thewildgoose7467
      @thewildgoose7467 5 лет назад

      I never said it was??? If you saw a headline "Irish rugby in the doldrums" would you say....Rugby isn't Ireland's national sport. No, you'd understand they are referring to the state of rugby currently being played in Ireland or by the Irish national rugby team, correct?There are literally dozens of different sports currently being played or practiced in Ireland, none of which are our "national sport", but people represent Ireland in most if not all of them. Ah wait...I understand now. When you said "come to" rather than 'go to' Britain, you're British right? We actually have two national sports, Gaelic football and hurling (if you don't know what hurling is, check out the youtube video "hurling, the fastest sport on grass". The games are played inter-club or inter-county, and unlike soccer you DO have to be born in a certain county to represent that county (how many Liverpool FC players were born in Liverpool for example?) Also, it's completely amateur, and the players play for the love of the game and the community they represent, not cash! However, unlike soccer, these games are not played in half the world, but then again we didn't colonise half the world like Britain, so there's that. If you are British I can only presume you came on this site to have a little chuckle over Rice's defection, which is fair enough. Although you're not adverse to a bit of player poaching yourselves either are you? Who can forget Terry Butcher, bloodied and bandaged and still battling on, the great British bulldog spirit...yet... wasn't he born in Singapore???

    • @thewildgoose7467
      @thewildgoose7467 5 лет назад +1

      So a 19yo kid who switches to his birth country is a weasel. However a 66yo under contract to a national team while openly touting for other jobs should be shown respect? Are you serious? O'Neill is a narcissistic, egotistical fraud who bridled at anyone even mildly questioning his tactics or motives, and who was found out in the latter stages of his tenure. He was all show and no substance, as demonstrated by his prowling the technical area in a tracksuit with his sleeves rolled up, which shouted "look at me I'm a hands on manager", when in fact he didn't even take training? You fail to mention that we got to the second round of the Euros because we beat an Italy B team as they were already qualified? You also fail to mention that of Wales "two world class players" one of them (Bale) wasn't playing, and to call the other (Ramsey) "world class" is over-hyping him. O'Neill's lack of tactical awareness was shown up clearly when he took off both defensive midfielders at half time in a world cup playoff, resulting in one of the best creative midfielders in football being given the freedom of the Aviva, and a 5-1 home defeat. I have zero respect for O'Neill.

It’s not mutually exclusive.
    Having said that, Declan definitely used us just for trials and I don’t think he ever actually wanted to play Ireland out of pride and that’s something that I’ll never be happy about. I have a similar background to Declan Rice, London born and raised but with Irish blood. All I can say it is that it is certainly possible to be a proud Englishman and also feel great pride in and affinity with your Irishness. Kilbane seems to think these things are mutually exclusive but they certainly aren't. Identity is not that simple. Truth is it must be a huge honour to play for either country. I don't doubt that Rice was being genuine when he expressed his pride in playing for Ireland. Still, it's a very difficult decision ultimately, and he was a very young man at the time. Who knows that conversations were had or what impression he gave behind the scenes, but on the whole I think he needs to be cut a bit of slack given his age at the time and also the very complex and multifaceted nature of one's identity.

    The problem is people like Kevin Kilbane and Gary Breen are born and raised in England to two very traditional Irish families at a time when a lot of Irish people living in the UK kept within their own communities. Kilbane and Breen were therefore brought up as 'Irish' and only ever felt 'Irish'. They never embraced the country and culture that they lived in which is the fundamental flaw in multiculturalism. In my opinion, when people immigrate to another country, they should try their best to adapt to their new country and culture and raise their kids to be proud citizens of their new country whilst still respecting their old country. Kilbane and Breen seem to be taking this way too personally!

      The Irish like to take the moral high ground but ultimately things turned out the way they did because England was stronger, nothing more.

      I understand what you are saying but its very idealistic, and I mean that with all respect to you. I have experience of a similar situation which I won't bore you with ... but, the crux of the matter here is that neither Breen nor Kilbane were courted so publically by the England manager at such critical time in their own decision making, so they cannot put themselves in Rice's shoes. He's 20 so it may be down to his own personal feelings over the past few years as a footballer, or he is being advised that it is financially better to be connected to England, or maybe a bit of both. In the end its his decision so good luck to the young man. Not all circumstances are the same and I bet this wasn't easy for him or his family.

You can’t expect a 16 year old to make life long decisions. I have enormous respect for Declan Rice to be true to himself. These two nations especially fast tracking young English talent into their own systems rather than invest in their own infrastructure is the root of the problem, not a young man being taken advantage of by lazy FA’s. English kids with Irish grandparents aren't Irish though, they don't feel Irish, they don't support Ireland. England isn't just their birthplace, it's their home.
