Garvey had trusted Joshua Cockburn, who was knowledgable about the shipping industry, to advise him on buying steamships. However, Cockburn advised Garvey to pay way too much money (almost 7x what it was worth) for a ship in bad condition, for which Cockburn got a large commission. So he basically screwed Garvey over.

I just watched this video I’m from Liberia I’m so proud of Mr.Garvey for at least trying to help his people, but it’s still bothersome to know that as black people why is it that we are never together ..? We need to stop that every black leader that tried to help our people was betrayed by one of us why wouldn’t you want to see the up lifting of your own people.
