The great John Wayne said the key to doing a good interview was to hesitate before you start speaking, to speak way slower and in a way deeper voice than you usually do and smile at the end of your response. I always remembered that and here Wayne does it perfectly.
Proud to say I have a picture of him above my desk with the caption “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail “ ! True gentleman of the sport as well as a great person . 😊
Amazing story about finding out he was sold to Edmonton mid-flight and having to come up with the money to pay for the flight. Lol, how things have changed...in great thanks to the man himself. Great vid.
Boy was he diplomatic when talking about Pocklington. Wayne didn't want leave Edmonton. Only when he saw that the situation with him and Peter had become unrectifiable did he want to leave. He felt underappreciated by Pocklington, and Pocklington said some things about Wayne and his father that Wayne just couldn't overlook. The relationship had become permanently fractured.
Pocklington said the things he said because he knew it would force Wayne out the door. Sather wanted Wayne to stay, and Pocklington realize he messed up, but it was too late. Sad that the Oilers couldn't keep that team together for the next 10 years, I would imagine at least another 3 or 4 cups. When you have a player on your team that transcends the game, you know you have someone special.
Every time I watch these these, I say to myself, sure the Jets had some great WHA days, and great players in the NHL v1 of the Jets but damn, we could of had Gretzky
Not the best player back then. In 1989 I think it was still Makarov, Fetisov and Larionov (pick one of them to taste). Neither was at their prime, I think that ended just a few years before 89 with these players but they were still among the best out there and better than Mogilny.
Funny how Letterman makes a joke at around 6:30 about hockey not being successful in Florida and Arizona, yet ironically we have 3 teams situated in those 2 states today...
Wayne was sort of correct about there being six teams in the WHA at the time. At the beginning of their last season, the league had seven teams, but the Indianapolis Racers folded 25 games in. The four teams taken into the NHL at the conclusion of the season were the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets (original), Quebec Nordiques, and New England Whalers (renamed Hertford Whalers. The Birmingham Bulls and Cincinnati Stingers would fold.
NHL tv ratings are same in 1980 4% Nielsen and in 1997 4% Nielsen! Blackhawks vs Bruins in 2013 only 3,3% Nielsen! Gretzky or Miracle on ice did not made hockey popular in the USA!
No music was played when he came out. Usually, when Letterman says, "Please welcome..." the guest comes out and Paul Schaeffer and the band play something. Why didn't they play anything for Wayne?
a lot of what if's, but he said it himself around 3:40 of the video, it came down to LA or Detroit. But I am sure the name Yzerman came up and The Ilitch's said, no.
social person who hit the NHL ice and was one of the most physically weakest player and his shot wasnt impressive at all, but he knew how to scores a goal so he scored up many goals. What if his shot would have been a "killer shot" what about then ?????
Lot of great fan bases. I've met la fans. I'm from buffalo,we are obsessed with hockey and the bills and I go what's it like? They go what's what like? I go what's it feel like to win a cup? They all go eh we don't really care, most people in la don't care about hockey. I was just like wow if we won a cup I would pass out. Assumed that's how every hockey fan base felt.

I’m so glad he did. I’m a Rangers fan.
Wow, thank you so much for this video, I really enjoyed it. Quality is very good!
28 years old all time point leader lebron will be 37 when he passes kareem mind boggling
Different sports my dude. Different scenarios.
@@davidkruse4030 - well, to be fair, it took Gordie Howe 26 years to set the all time points mark. Gretzky smashed it in 10 years.

Yeah, Wayne had to play with a goon on his back, who was a foot taller and outweighed by 75 lbs., every night!
4:17 Alexander Mogilny
5:39 Letterman was an avid hockey fan.
Amazing story about finding out he was sold to Edmonton mid-flight and having to come up with the money to pay for the flight. Lol, how things have changed...in great thanks to the man himself. Great vid.
This man will be on Canadian money one day.

Funny, the question about the NYR, 8 years after he was with NYR.
+kimcauchy before, not after. 7 years before as video is 1989 and joined NYR in 1996.

Can you imagine if he went to Detroit back then talk about a powerhouse
At 4:19 are they referencing Alexander "the great" Mogilny?
Yes.

After Dawn And at 1:48 he said"People would die if a hockey team in California wins the Stanley Cup." Since then, LA and Anaheim have won the Cup.
you can tell at 5:34 Gretzky wanted to make a joke about Edmonton or Winnipeg but thought better of it lol.
interview is way too short

Kings and Ducks got Cups now. NHL sure has expanded, Vegas, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Dallas all winners.

Alex Mogilny
Florida and Arizona lol. Time changes.

This was his old show that was on after Johnny Carson on NBC. Some of the time they didn't play music.
starwarsrebel2006 hes no big deal....now if it was orr ....marching band would of been player with fire works and danicing girls...
Jim Wade Leading scorer of all time. No big deal. Sure, whatever you say.

Wayne would eventually make the finals once with the Kings in 1993, but they wound up losing to the Montreal Canadiens in five games.
Worst trade ever! Still hate the trade to this day!
ypu best trade ever...la love it
Class. Pure class......could use a hair cut but those were the times and my head is super jelly!
Cut that majestic flow? Sacrilege.
It was no trade. His rights were sold by Nelson Scalbania to Peter Pocklington for $1 million.
Till later on he join the rangers but wow a red wing amazing that would be

Are Kings fans really the best fans in hockey?
Fuck no. But Wayne always had great judgement, and said the right things. He never really opened his mouth and made waves

hes lucky covid came around or ovechkin would pass his all time scoring record....but never say never...
And maybe, just maybe, he'll get to half of Gretzky's point total.
Ovechkin isn't a play maker. If he had half Gretzky's talent he'd have more than one cup. His selfish play has kept Washington back.
ya, I like it ... pola polish shoes with seriously nice ummmmmm ... hands.
Hes allmost as good as bobby orr...
Give it up Wade
Orr only won 2 Stanley Cups in a time when it was far less competitive.
Wayne in California, such a disaster.
