I think you are right but i've also seen John in tv performances where he was very very dirty in his words against people. I was disappointed when i saw that and it completely shattered the view i had of him as an icon of peace and understanding.
He does deserve it, but it's staged. It's American television. He was headhunted for this role because of his brilliance on Swedish television. Can't give gold to a headhunted person.

The fact that Cowell "guessed" he was a singer was bullcrap as he'd have been very aware of Klaffords success by this point. Not taking away that this was a beautiful rendition but the show made him out to be a brand new singer that hadn't done it before and it's not the case.

It`s actually not that rare. And it is on full display on youtube. It`s always easier to improve on something existing than to create something new. That`s especially true for writing of all kinds (music, lyrics, books, poems). And not all writers were good singers. They did the foundation and better singers build on it. Happens all the time. The only reason this might be somewhat perceived as rare is that most people prefer the version they are used to.

Not taking away that this was a beautiful rendition but the show made him out to be a brand new singer that hadn't done it before and it's not the case.

It's a mostly rare occasion when a covering artist does a song in such a way that the audience at large would call it "better than the original"...This was/is such a case. When I heard this rendition the first time, I went through a very bad patch in my life. I'm not out of the woods yet, but this moves me tears every time. My wife has been instructed that this song will be played at my funeral...THIS cover!

It`s actually not that rare. And it is on full display on youtube. It`s always easier to improve on something existing than to create something new. That`s especially true for writing of all kinds (music, lyrics, books, poems). And not all writers were good singers. They did the foundation and better singers build on it. Happens all the time.
The only reason this might be somewhat perceived as rare is that most people prefer the version they are used to.
If this performance doesn't deserve a golden buzzer then I don't know what does.
