    Guard Dog does not wreck Militia :) You play the card BEFORE you resolve the attack, so you first draw 2 (or 4) cards and then discard down to 3.

    I don’t think the later expansions post-Dark Ages will get 2nd editions. Donald X. has said in the forums that he got better over time designing fewer dud cards especially with the later expansions

      Dark Ages has its share of useless kingdom cards (as does Adventures). It's post-Empires that the quality becomes consistent across the board.

    You will change your minds about Cauldron the first time someone plays four, buys three cheap action cards and everyone else receives four curses :)

      Actually, that still feels balanced. A single Witch can get you over four cycles. This combo requires some digging, so the payoff should be brutal.

    Given how it was supposed to be a compatible sequel/standalone expansion, makes sense that its identity is all over the place

    I think the biggest improvement they could make to Alchemy is creating a Potion update or alternative worth 1 Potions and 1 Copper.

    Thanks for doing all of these 2nd ed reviews! I still need to get them incorporated into my old collection box
    Also, the video title should have "second edition" on there to avoid confusion

    I thought you had to play guard dog, if you react to an attack before the millita hits. Or is it after?

    • @borreholic
      @borreholic 2 года назад +2

      Guard Dog's reaction part says: "When another player plays an attack, you may first play this from your hand". "May" means playing the card is optional, and "first" means it happens before the effect of the attack, if you choose to play it.
      So yeah, if it is a Militia you're reacting to you still have to discard down to three. So you probably don't react to a Militia with it, but it ultimately depends on the situation and what other cards you have I guess (a stronger terminal in hand, for example).

    Does Guard dog work with militia? Dont you have to draw 2 cards first, and then if you have less than 5 you draw 2 more?

    • @TheEternal792
      @TheEternal792 2 года назад

      It does not work well with militia; they were mistaken.
      You'd have to play an action from your hand first that would give you an action but not draw you a card so that you're down to 2.

    It is a shame that Silk Road got cut, but it was quite weak. And to avoid confusion, they couldn't just keep it and tweak it. And including a new Victory card would have meant only having 8 new cards (because as a Victory card you need 2 more copies of it, and these upgrade packs are 100 cards, not 101 cards).
    EDIT: Also, Mandarin is bad! It's very extremely bad.

  • @knolchi

    The designer, Donald X. Vaccarino, has stated that he does the second editions when the first edition sells out. Since Alchemy is the least favorite of all the expansions, it probably has not sold out yet. Having to buy potions to buy the cards in Alchemy also made it not so popular because if you only had one or two Alchemy cards in the kingdom, it was very limiting to have to spend money on a Potion card that was worth nothing in your hand for most of the cards that were available. So it may never get a second edition.

    • @jonathanlogan6953
      @jonathanlogan6953 8 месяцев назад

      If he made Potions worth 1 Coin as well, I think it could make the set much more compelling

  • @joeferreti9442
    @joeferreti9442 2 года назад +2

    Technically he comes to the house and throws away the removed cards if you have bought only the 2nd edition, because he denies you the original cards. They could have just added a few new cards. It would have costed them only a few pennies to print a few more cards on the whole in mass production.

    • @LastFootnote
      @LastFootnote 2 года назад +6

      Removing the duds does more to make the game better than adding the new cards. The duds take up space in the game, being useless. They could be better cards instead. Now they are!
      Also I’m guessing you don’t know much about card game manufacturing.

    • @joeferreti9442
      @joeferreti9442 2 года назад

      @@LastFootnote The removed cards aren't solely duds. And if they were duds, then why were they in the game in the first place? Denying people to buy the original parts of an accomplished game seems very wrong.

      @@saiyanroyalty229 I'm fine with that. Some of the sets reinvent the wheel and some are more "classic"...but when I say "weak", I mean that literally. If you mix all the sets together, it's almost a guarantee that the Kingdom cards from Hinterlands are the ones you're *not* grabbing during your buy phase.
