the fact that a couple songs got so blown out of proportion by the whole world so that he actually was scared to even go outside because of the death treaths and hate is making me so sad. He didn’t deserve any of this, and I’m so glad he’s finally speaking his truth, and how he’s still and always have been so respectful even with millions of people making his life a living hell. Knowing now that this song is about SA gives it a completely new meaning. And I'm sad people are making it about Olivia. Josh really poured his heart into this to talk about his trauma. From a survivor: It's okay to want to be set free. You don't have to hold onto that trauma to be valid in your experience. ❤️
They are not enterly wrong by making this about Olivia because it's also about her, probably the lyrics in the beginning and the bridge are more directed to her. But you are right that it's much more than that, he said it's about everyone who hurt and hold power over him; I think he said in Zach's interview that he wasn't thinking about SA when he wrote it but that he realize later that it also apply to it...
Joshua said (in his Zach Sang interview) that he didn't write this song about the SA itself, but that a while after writing it, he realized that the song resonates with any situation where power or fear is held over someone to control them.

The whole song it’s so hard
As a CSA survivor myself, it’s crystal clear. But, I can see how it wouldn’t be clear to someone who hasn’t been there. He said it’s more of an anthem for everyone who has ever hurt him, not just about SA. But, SA (especially CSA) hurts in a different way. CSA rewires your brain and actually physically changes you. It’s super easy to feel like you’re in chains. (Some of us have physically been, but even those of us who haven’t physically, the mental chains are so much worse). You feel like someone else has “taken all of you”. It’s almost hard to describe, but he words it in such a way it makes sense to me.
it's funny how olivia claimed she loved him so much yet did everything to tear him apart, on the other hand, joshua went through so much yet is so empathetic, forgiving and kind towards her. actions truly speak louder than words!

@@Annie-np8is Not only about it, this year was shitty for him so it didn't helped him to heal that memory. For the ones who are wondering, in GQ he said what does these song are about and one of the reasons was that in his childhood and even while he was a teen he got sexually abused, he couln't remeber it until last year. It fitted with the whole hatred he has lived after Drivers License, so it has two directions with one same way: Leaving him alone, setting him free. The mental abuse he has lived is insane. Now he's healing, it hurts when he didn't try to be shitty with anyone but that's what he received. Tht's the context of Set Me Free.
This thing happened with a girl and I.
There was a spark and I thought that it was going to be forever. I thought wrong. She ghosted. For a couple of months, I kept telling myself, "I screwed up, She's too good for me, she never really liked me, I have no one to blame but myself."
I was messed up in my mind, listening to songs about people missing someone and/or people thinking they aren't good enough.
This song made me realize that, I don't need a girl in my life. She ghosted me, I didn't do anything. Don't care if it's true about me not being good enough, I'm going to work on me, move on, live my life. Thank you so much Joshua.

the fact that he almost died last year on top with all the death threats he received everyday. her fans hope he would perish. he couldn’t even go to the store without hearing her on the radio and they would play all her songs until josh left. it’s incredibly sad, all of that and hearing he was SA. my heart goes out to him hope he’s taking care of himself and not focusing on the hate but all the love he’s getting.

About Joshua, I have to say that he has been an extremely strong child and that he is a love of a person who deserves everything.
Here is a news where there is a summary of what Joshua relates, about something terrible that inspired this beautiful song:
Joshua Bassett spoke about being sexually abused as a child and teenager in a new profile with GQ.
"I experienced sexual abuse a lot in my childhood,” he began, reportedly tearing up. “I didn't remember that until last year, which is pretty insane. I buried it so far."
"And when I was a teen, a much older man routinely abused me, and I wasn't able to see it for what it was at the time," he continued.
Joshua then said that he explored part of processing this trauma in his new song "Set Me Free," which he called, “An anthem for me and the sort of people who’ve held pain and power over me my whole life.”

Thank you for posting this. I actually experienced the same thing and also remembered last year. This is an extremely lonely thing to handle and finding someone my age, healing on the same path as I, and also advocating like myself, makes me so happy and heartbroken all at once. This right here is a human being. The amount of hate he unfairly got for pretty much an entire year was more than convicted rapists, murders or terrorists have gotten. This is the most toxic and unhealthy our society has ever been and I’m ashamed to be a part of this generation. We need to do better, we need to speak up, we all need to play our part both privately and publicly so nobody experiences this extreme amount of judgement and hatred for something as simple as a breakup, that we never once had the entire story about. There’s a lot of people who are going to have to answer to something higher than them, whether it’s God, karma or something else. We need to do better, all of us, simple as that.
I agree, internet is pretty much a base for people to hate others without knowing the full story. Besides even if someone knows the story, they still doesn't have the right to give an opinion, It's not your relationship, it's theirs.

I know the feeling. I’ve been in a lot of fan communities that are toxic as hell, and they made me lose faith in humanity. I thought confronting them would put a stop to it. I’ve been doing that for years, but all it is is a losing battle. I completely agree. People need to remember that there are two sides to every story. I have a lot of respect and sympathy for what he’s gone through in the last year. I can’t imagine the kind of pain he’s had to endure. I’m glad he’s finally standing up for himself and is saying “enough is enough.” It’s time to set him free, and let him live his life without hate.
I hope his life gets better and that he knows it's okay not to forgive the person that hurt you especially if they literally made up lies and continue to do so.

As well as everything he had to endure throughout the recent year or two. This is his message to all those painful moments that it's time for them to go, it's time for them to set him free. At the same time, their songs have lines that reflect how they felt and how the other person made them felt during the entirety of their relationship. I have felt so bitter for a long time after my past break-up, and I feel it was normal to feel that way, she felt bitter towards me as well. However, if we were to be honest, I had faults, I was young and acted childish and so did she as well if she would admit it too. The end of the story is that things happen in relationships where you come to a place when sometimes you need to break-up. Josh, I feel devastated that you're tragic break-up had to blow up so big because I'm sure both of you hurt just as much, I wish it could have been better for you where you could both come to terms with it and realize that mistakes were made on both sides, I wish she could have been more mature. Ik this song is ab SA but i’m going to say why I can relate.4 months ago i got into a relationship with a person named Astra.They were the sweetest,most loving,funny person i’ve ever met.Well I have dependency and trust issues so I asked for reassurance a lot and would tell them when I was overthinking because that’s the only way they would give reassurance.Well fast forward a month ago and 2 am.They break up with me over voice memos.I was hurt but understood because they thought it would make highschool harder.But then they started getting aggressive.Started saying they were unhappy every second of the relationship,that it drove them crazy that they were scared to leave me,that I took every chance to be pitied and not once thought it was annoying.I have been through a ton of trauma in my 14 years and that already made me more paranoid of being an attention seeker and even more scared of love.Well I gave them a note after a while getting out everything I felt so I can move on.
