  • This was one of Sony's newer Hi8 camcorder from 2002. It came with a 3 inch screen, halogen spotlight, titling, and amazingly, a USB jack for streaming video to your computer, albeit it low quality and choppy. Unfortunately a damaged part of the tape mechanism is preventing the camcorder from being able to record to tape, but at least I can use it as a high-quality webcam.

That's a nice camcorder; shame the deck doesn't work. I've never seen so much random stuff in a camera bag lol.
How do you get these to work as a USB webcam? Do you still use Windows XP? I've gotten mine to work on XP, but not 7.
I find it interesting how this model goes 'beep' instead of 'ding', even though I believe they introduced the ding on the 1999 models. I wonder what prompted them to return to the beep on this one?

I know I comment on here before, but I have to watch again because I just realized that this analog camcorder has a usb jack which is surprising to me. I can't believe that it pass over my head watching this. that would make my dream come true if the xr series was still there. that would make an excellent analog camcorder in the early 00s.

I appreciate your honest off the cuff review. I just got an old TRV 608 (to use to dub my old Hi8 tapes). I have tried to take video out of the SVHS port with no luck. I've tried two different S cables. And if you want audio you need to also use the mini video/audio plug. Any thoughts on how to get S video out of the TRV 608
    ?

Help! I have a CCD-TRV608 Hi8. Aren't the videos supposed to be in 640x480 or 720x480. When I use the USB cable option to capture the video to my computer, the highest resolution in the "Sony Digital Imaging Video" driver is 320x240. Any ideas on how to capture at the higher resolutions? I'd hate to down sample my Hi8 videos when going to digital!

Probably a bit late, but if you're still looking to do it, just get a capture card (composite to usb device, usually like $20), and a 3.5mm to rca cable (video + mono audio out, usually yellow and black connectors) and use a program like VirtualDub. You can play back the tapes and record them at 640x480, and even deinterlace them to make them smoother if you tweak a few settings. Works like a charm.

what cables would I need to capture footage? I might have the wrong adapter. Its av to HDMI. I have been told many times that I need a firewire cable but this model doesn't come with a port.

What did you record this on?

That little mechanism that you held at the end is most probably the reason why the tape transport isn't working properly. There probably isn't much if any chance of fixing it, unless it just snaps back into place, then you'd be set. But yeah, that looks like one of the main tape guides, maybe it's even one of the two guides that hold the tap up against the head drum.
Even though it doesn't work as intended, the camcorder is still definitely usable. Even only if you use it as a quote-unquote webcam for your live stream show or something. Plus you can never have too many tapes! Okay, maybe sometimes... Your reaction to finding that mint made me laugh.

I would have liked to have had a Hi8 camcorder with a USB streaming option before I got a MiniDV camcorder. I shot a lot of tape but I didn't have a capture card until the DV camcorder came about so I had to edit everything on VHS. Granted, a capture card would have been nicer, but a USB cable might have been cheaper. Now I can just stream the video over FireWire with my MiniDV camcorder, but in the day it would have been nice to just be able to edit together low res videos for the website my friend ran until 2006 when his brother moved out and his dad stopped paying for the domain.

I have a sony pal trv around the same age but it has composite out not s-video
can i mod it? is it good enought to export?

I wouldn't be able to suggest any modifications as it's something I've never looked into. Composite, for all intents and purposes, should be more than enough for most applications.

true, you can get analog camcorders of all types dirt cheap. I recently got a complete like new Sharp Viewcam outfit with Hi8, all the accesories (remote control too), and extra batteries that hold a charge at a Good Will for 20$. I have at least five Sharp viewcams. I have some nice VHS-C too. I have a very nice JVC outfit will all its goodies, got it for 15$ at GW. I use my digital cams to make YT vids, but I still liek to goof off with the analog stuff too, great ""beaters"" for home movies.

I know this post is older but: I have a really well kept CCD-TRV608 Sony Cam. I want to use it as a good Video Cam but the Driver for streaming on Windows 10 isn't available or supported by Sony anymore. Is there another Driver work around or other option to explore to stream live. I teach music lessons on zoom and would like to link it up to there, please help, stereophonicstuff guy or anyone with expertise ? Thanks very much.
Also, shouldn't the battery charge up when left on the camera and plugged in ? Mine doesn't seem to be taking a charge. Its old but rarely used.

    • @stereophonicstuff

The USB streaming was pretty much a gimmick with really awful quality, so the fact that it doesn't work on Windows 10 shouldn't be too much of a letdown. I'm not sure if using compatibility mode in Windows 10 when trying to install the driver would make any difference but you could always give it a shot. I've gotten lucky many times using compatibility mode to install drivers meant for older operating systems on Windows 10.
If that doesn't work (or you'd like better quality than what the camcorder's USB streaming can get you), you could always buy something like an EasyCap or another USB video capture card that plugs into the USB port on your computer and the AV out jacks on the camcorder. Then you'd just select that as the input in your software.
The battery should also charge with it connected to the camcorder. The fact that it doesn't indicate that it's failed and won't accept a charge.

Why when you show the footage from the camera it has a 16:9 aspect ratio even when you're using the 4:3 mode?

You're way ahead for 5$, try to find a new Hi8 tape for 5$! I have a couple of defective camcorders, was thinking of using them as security cameras. I junked my share of Sony's, they seem to be the most trouble prone camcorders for me. Canon is also often bad news. I stick with Panasonic and JVC and Sharp.
