Thank you!
Enjoyed your podcast on Hurricane Creek Mine Disaster. But the library isn’t named after Richard Nixon. A municipal arena in Hyden was named after him.
You are right...that's why we added the pop up disclaimer on the video! Thanks for watching...
Is that customary for miners to write their SS# on their belts? That really got me....
I don’t think so. In this case, though, they were so concerned about something happening they wanted to let recovery teams know who they were if worse came to worst.
Coal miners broke there backs trying to put food on the table, and to make sure that their kids could have a better life. If Black Lung and destroying their bodies wasn't enough on a daily basis, the owners of the mines seem to compromise on the health and safety at every turn. It took strikes to get better pay, benefits and safer working conditions. It's unreal what coal miners have had to endure. Hardest working people I can think of, and yet treated so shabbily. Shameful.
I thought it was 1971
No, it happened in December, 1970, but since it was late in the month, you'd likely have heard news about it in January, too.
No, it happened on December 30, 1970, but the news of it and of the rescue and recovery efforts extended into 1971.
@@StoriesofAppalachia oh yea that’s right. And the miners weren’t pronounced dead till the next day I suppose.
Or maybe they were. I remember December 30th now. Thanks.
