This is an analysis of my first round game against GM Samuel Sevian at the 2015 UT Dallas Fall FIDE Open. Tournament website: chess-results.c...

Sorry for the awkward board angle :/ I'm limited by space (pretty much just a small desk to film on here) and a tripod that doesn't extend very far. It's surprisingly difficult to film a board and get all the action in frame, too! Anyways, hope you guys like it :)
+John Bartholomew was gonna say that. it's not that big a deal, though.
+John Bartholomew I had no issues following the moves on the board.
+John Bartholomew Actually, I had an idea: I can try putting my set on the floor and filming at a more birds-eye angle. Will try this...stay tuned!
+John Bartholomew I thought it looked fine frankly. It gives the view as if I were playing the position
+John Bartholomew Love this format! During the whole video I was feeling as if I'm really there being taught over the board. I wish all the tournament games you analyse (not only in Dallas) were over the real board. And I don't think you should change the camera view, it all looks just like I'm sitting there (I'm quite short lol). And thanks!
Love the format, love the angle, love the fact that you are using a real board. I think that you should use this while reviewing your games always.
+Gadzinisko Thanks, Gadzinisko! I will continue to do analysis vids with an actual board and pieces.
Yes, absolutely.
Amazing that despite the strenuous chess schedule at the tourney John still finds the time to teach. Well played and thanks!
Appreciate the quality of the content and the production. Thanks so much, John!
+T. Alexander Lystad Thanks, Alex!
I really like these live tournament game analyses, feels more exciting for some reason. Best of luck in your matches. And keep up the good work, it is much appreciated!
+Daniel M I appreciate the support, Daniel!
It is even more interesting and instructive to see your analizys on real board with real pieces, John. Wish you good luck in the tournament.
+Иван Маличев Thanks!
top level explanation right here
Great video, John. I always enjoy your analysis of your tournament games.
+HenricusGames Thanks!
Your the only youtuber that plays Chess that i Can watch for over an hour keep up the hold Work now I sound like my teacher
Love the Vlogs John! Would be awesome to see more of your experience there! (tournament hall? routine before matches? etc...)
Thanks for all the content though!
+Justin Leighton Thanks, Justin! I didn't have time to record much reflection on the tournament, but I'll see if I can do that in London.
G'Day John. The Vlogs are awesome. Angle is fine, easy to follow, loved the analysis. Good luck for the rest of the tourney!!
+Patrick Oliver Thanks, mate!
Like the way John shows the games on an actual board with actual pieces. Okay, the camera angle here isn't the best, the occasional pawn is sometimes hidden, but I still applaud this. Plus, it's always interesting and good to listen to a player commenting on their own games.
I love how everyone calls the broken part of the rook something different. Looking through the comments so far we have: flange, crown, pinnacle, crenellation, and battlement!
Really like this video. Like the game analysis, and the board angle wasn't too bad. Congrats on the draw, hope the rest of the tourny goes well. #teamscandi !
+davidkalekoable Thank you!
Hi John!
Congrats on your win in the third round! Hope you continue to do well throughout the tourney!
+Shaunak Maruvada wheres the result?
+hizboe solid He deafeated a 2200. arena.chessdom.com/#/stream_tournaments/show/1226
+martín thanks
+Shaunak Maruvada Thanks again, Shaunak!
this series is amazing john! best chess series for learning!
+Victor Håland Thanks, Victor!
Hey John, I love the board view. Man, it has been so long since I played OTB, it was refreshing to see an actual board and pieces with analysis (like the good ole days!). Anyway, great game. I like the Scandi structures, as I used to play the Caro K quite a bit and am considering adopting the Center Counter more seriously...Nice job and good luck going forward
+Robert Hulsman Thank you, Robert! I've liked how some of these over-the-board analysis videos have turned out, so I think I'll try to keep it up.
John, Congrats on your win today against Arthur Calugar, #ScandiStrikes
+Hungi Ayera Thanks, Hungi! #TeamScandi
7:47 john is recording a video it's actually at 7:49 but the talking starts at 7:47
Well done. Love the video and setup
Super cool angle to be honest! Like others, didn't have too much trouble following (it helped you pointed to and called out everything). Having never played chess over the board I actually liked seeing the game from this angle for the first time! So that's what it feels like! :)
+kozzi Thanks, kozzi!
John Enjoyable Play with an excellent challenge! The board lay out here in every respect is very pleasant viewing for the Audience. Your insights in the analyses was spot on in both detail & explanation. Greatly enjoyed this helpful Presentation. Your always Generous John and Ch. content remains instructional & very enjoyable. A Grand Game my Friend. Thanks for a job here so well done.& As Always, Blessings your way from Oregon, ... Mike.
nice job John...you never disappoint...
7:15-7:45 - I think you're forgetting to mention that this leads to opposite colored bishops, making drawing chances higher, which go along with Sevien's hopes for a draw after move eleven.
Nice John! Good luck dude!!!
+niki w. Thanks!
at 23:01 cant black play Rh5, and if white takes the a pawn, black takes h pawn, also if after Rh5 white does h3, black goes a5??
Got to be happy getting a draw against a GM.I agree thought black had an edge.Very good and insightful commentary.Thank you for sharing.
i really like these game review videos using real pieces instead of a computer program
very instructive, congrats john
+airan perez Thanks, airan!
At 14:18 I paused the video, here's my solution: Pe5, so if he takes Pxe5, Rxd2, Rxd2, Rxd2, and black is winning, and if he doesn't, black moves Pe4
10:59 that vintage rook on d1
I meant to add that I really enjoy this angle versus the birds eye view....thanks
Steinitz said: "With a better position you not only can attack. You are obliged to!"
That may be strong words, but you just talked about Black being even much better!
Those two pieces of data put together and I found e5 in a second ...
So: all I need now is having you standing beside me when I play OTB !!! ;O)
+Stefan Holbek Nice find! :)
Solid performance and very good analysis for us to understand what was going on. It sounds like you didn't fully believe in your winning chances against Sevian, but we can't blame you for playing it safe against GMs :-)
+Laurent SaltofLife Thanks, Laurent! I have a tendency to play more conservative at the beginning of a tournament, so this may have have affected my play a bit.
John,on 6:03 when you're explaining tactics with Nf4 ,isn't that a blunder for white because you have knight takes d4? Probably you managed to draw because that kid didn't have 7up like he did when he beat IM Greg :D
excellent game john. brilliant content
+Dhruv Jain Thanks, Dhruv :)
Nice game and game analysis John! .. Wish u all the best for the rest of the tournament well!.. Sevian was a strong one... To draw as black with him isn't bad at all..
+AlphaOmega Thanks for the support!
What about Rc5 at 23:15?
Good one, JB.
Nice analysis but at 16:10 could you play like Qa4 putting presure on d5 and on a5 and on they bishop he is protected but within couple moves he can stay hanged ;)
I love these over-the-board videos! Question - for less experienced players, we're often told to put a Rook on an open file. When you're talking about your Rad8 move, why not Rab8 to control that big juicy open file?
Great game! I could follow easily as the angle was fine.
You make chess very simple!! Keep up the good work!!
+Er1nGoBragh Cheers, Er1nGoBragh!
its not awkward board angle>> nice video
Can anyone link me where buy those pieces
google reykjavik chess pieces, try to find it in chessbazaar or house of staunton web page, this chess pieces are not reykjavik but they are very similar. Here is a little warning about the reykjavik chess set, it has a very fragile rook, you should keep that in mind
Loved your exposition of Opera House Game on chessable. Thanks
Hi John, first of all I'd like to say that I like your videos alot!
I'm a 1900-2000ish player. Recently I've been looking at a
solid yet dynamic opening for black against 1.e4. I've played the french
defense almost exclusively but I start to feel like white has too many
ways of posing black for important difficult postions. I've also been
watching your videos as of late, and although I always looked at the
Scandi as a dubious defense, I'm starting to get interested in your
system. So I'd like to get some more insight in it. Do you know any
videos explaining some thematic ideas/ going over some important lines
in this system? Or did you make one yourself?
Thanks in advance.
Have a gander on chessable as John has made some repertoires on there that you may find useful.
Nice win in rd 3! Keep it up :)
14:23 ..QA4 is a good move? I think it's very good
+Riighhe Could be, though on ...Qa4 Ra1 Black would have to reckon with discovered attacks from the bishop.
John, what are your thoughts on instead of playing Nc6-a5 allowing Nf3-e5 playing a6-a5 with Bc8-a6 ideas, harassing the Queen?
#2016GMBartholomew
#2019GMBartholomew
Loved the analysis! I've played the Scandi quite a bit know, thanks to you! Love the opening! But i'm wondering how black should respond if white plays e5 on move two!!? Do you know where i can find information about this? Maybe you can make a short video? I understand fully if you want to focus on the other features on the channel though. #TeamScandi !! :D
+BRINGM3LOVE Hey, BRINGM3LOVE! If 1.e4 d5 2.e5 both 2...c5 and 2...Bf5 are good. Black generally obtains an improved of a French Defense since his light-square bishop will be outside of the pawn chain.
+John Bartholomew Arraight! I understand. I will check out some theory on the French aswell to understand fully what you mean. Thank you very much! I will try this next time. On my level (around 1650), the Scandi is regularly declined you see. This will help me continue next time! Haha! Thanks a lot!
It seems even IM's have chess sets with broken flanges on the rooks! :) Board angle was ok. I even picked out e5! Great game. Thanks.
Love the analysis - always fun to see Alekhine’s Gun in play (even if it wasn’t in its pure form :))
Whats the chess set you are using It looks amazing is it on amazon.
Forced checkmate at 5:04. Elbow Variation.
+Johan Irvall lol. Never underestimate the Elbow Attack.
John, why dont you add the caro-kann to your repertoire? It produces the same structure as the scandinavian, and it generally has a better reputation
+Parkinson De Seiz Hey, Parkinson. I've played the Caro-Kann on occasion, so I may re-introduce it to my repertoire at some point. Black is currently experiencing problems in the Advance Variation (3.e5), so that would be a point of concern in adopting it again.
John good job, you drew a super strong guy. Are you fighting for a GM norm on this tournament? If so, how many wins/points do you need? Also how is your friend doing? I can't remember his name but he was cool haha.
+martín Hey, martín! I was hoping to score a GM norm at this tournament, but I didn't play well enough. Keaton performed about the same as I did: reasonable, but nothing special.
One of your best.
+N0rwegianBlue Thank you!
can anyone point to me where I can get pieces like this? or just nice wooden pieces that arent over $100?
can you put this and the archives in a playlist
I love this video format perhaps raise the camera a bit higher.
wow great vid thanks!
+Kevin Spies Thanks for watching, Kevin.
Gg and nice video. Soon to be GM Bartholomew
+guitrgunslingr Thanks :)
Great game. You drew a future World Champion. ;)
what about Qf4 instead of A4?
I really like that set can u tell me where u got it please
you're awsome John
Really interesting game John, my first instinct was also Qa4 btw and I'd stand it was a fine move in the end. At some point thouhg you mentioned it was tough to manouver the knight away, how about instead of Kf8 try R8d6 with Nd7-c5 to follow? I was surprised you mentioned the weird engine line with R8d6 a move later, but did not mention that possibility.
+pjrutkowski That's a definite possibility. I have a feeling it's too slow (maybe ...R8d6 Rc1 is a good response?), but I will have a look at that again.
Nice game, John. How did you find Sam's attitude? I felt he came across as overly arrogant against Greg Shahade on that video you mention, but then he was only 10 so this can be forgiven. He is still very young at 14, and obviously an amazing player, but I was interested in whether he had changed, and how you found him during and after your game?
+wfcyellow Thanks, wfcyellow! Sam seemed pretty mature for a 14 year-old. I had no issues with him, and I think he conducted himself well at the tournament.
Thanks John, that's good to hear actually
what chess set is that? i want those pieces
i have this set Staunton Chessmen 022/3.75 (M-233) boxwood and sheesham wood, (made in india)
What kind of chess set is this.
Board and analysis on Lichess for those that don't like the angle en.lichess.org/s0pQL6Qd/black
Awesome. Nice Video, nice game!
thanks john for sharing this nice game. to be honest that pawn looked quite weak at all times or at least not clearly menacing. i thought about playing h6 maybe before e5 to resolve backrank stuff and to drop the bishop back to h7 at some point maybe. would have just been a little improving move.
+AnthonyAllGood Thanks for watching/commenting!
Awesome video, thanks John! Interesting to note that the patron saint of the 3...Qd8 (besides yourself obviously) did indeed play the very ambitious 8..c4, trying to imprison that bishop for the rest of the game: en.lichess.org/d9x9xby8
Seems like 10.Be3 might be more critical - I had a quick look at 10...e6 11.O-O (11.d5 Bc5) 11...Bb4 and it's a real mess.
Great game versus Sevian - very smooth draw against very tough opposition.
+Tony Rotella Thanks, Tony! I remember seeing this game of GM Djukic. Looks like his opponent held a nice initiative.
Good instructive video.
The black rook has a broken piece that messed with my A.D.D. throughout this video!
nice game john!
What chess mat and pieces are those
NICE ONE....thanks for sharing....Fins all Day!
+Jason Garza Appreciate it, Jason!
also what is the difference between qc7 and qb6 since they both seem to attack the pawn and provoke ra1? why did you only point out one?
+AnthonyAllGood Do you mean at 15:10? ...Qb6?? axb6 loses the queen.
i think i meant ot say qb5 or qa4 as alternatives. are they much worse than qc7?
+AnthonyAllGood Ah, gotcha. I think ...Qb5 and ...Qa4 would be similar to ...Qc7 in that White would meet these moves with Ra1.
Whats the official name of that wooden chess set sir.
Nice game vs. Sevian.
+Mike M. Thanks, Mike.
Thanks, John, for the excellent analysis. [I do want to recommend, though, that you just use a standard "picture" of the board rather than the actual board. There isn't enough advantage to seeing the actual board to compensate for the reduced "sense" of the overall position.] Thanks so much.
I think your Qd8 line takes them out of their known theory and forces them to use more time. Nice draw with black against high rated opposition.
+Jason Rawls Agreed, 3...Qd8 has had some excellent surprise value. That will diminish as this line becomes more well-known, but it's nice for the time being.
Oh no, one of your black rooks is missing a crenellation! Great overview, thanks John.
+pbogatsky Yeah! I've had bad luck with wood sets. I used to have a roommate with a dog, and he chewed the crap out of a bishop in one of my woods sets, too.
Height of camera to be increased so that small pawns will be visible against king and king
How far are you from your GM title?
He needs about 50 more FIDE rating points and 2 more GM norms.
Also the chessbomb engine agrees with Sevian. Black has decent winning chances after Qxa5, Qxf7+ etc.
+Ryan Murphy Yup, that's the only realistic winning attempt.
Hope you weren't too frightened by Sevian's menacing stare!
+M² Heh, no way :)
+M² Heh, no way :)
Really nice game :)
at 16:10 you should have gone to Qa4
5:05 White resigned. John wins!
sorry i meant qb5 of course lol
nice game. congrats
+biernico Thanks :)
Consider this comment my advance order for the book that you're going to write on the Qd8 Scandi! You ARE going to write one right :-)
What does IM stand for
International Master
muy good
Nice game, not Alekhines gun but maybe Bartholomew's bazooka?
Why does everyone who owns one of these wood sets always seem to have at least one broken rook?
+dmed The crowns always seem brittle.
I feel so special that I got the e5 right
I thought about knight e5. Why isn't that a good move?
Knight can't go to e5
