Tom Johnston, on electric guitar, sang lead on most of their early recordings. He got very ill in the mid 70's and had to quit for a bit. That's when they recruited Michael McDonald to join them. Michael left after a couple of albums and Tom returned. Patrick Simmons sings lead here, he's one of the original members like Tom. Patrick sings lead on their song Black Water as well.
This is Pat Simmons, who is a founding member of the Doobie Brothers along with Tom Johnston (who did the majority of vocals before Michael McDonald). Tom sang lead on Listen to the Music, Long Train Runnin', China Grove, etc. Pat sang lead on on Black Water, I Cheat the Hangman, and many others with this mellower guitar-picking tunes.
The late Cornelius Bumpus on soprano sax. John McFee on pedal steel guitar. Both joined the Doobie Brothers for the One Step Closer album which was the last to have Michael McDonald as a full member. Soon after One Step Closer, Pat Simmons (guitarist and lead singer on this song) decided to leave the band, so McDonald suggested the band break up, which they did in 1982. Then in 1987 the Doobie Brothers had their big reunion tour to benefit Vietnam veterans and soon after the main songwriters Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston (the guitarist who played solos on this song) were back in the Doobies for the Cycles album (early 1990s) and onwards. They specifically wanted the lineup that recorded the Toulouse Street album, so that's the lineup that recorded Cycles. Michael McDonald was not on Toulouse Street so that's why he wasn't included. He's played live with the Doobies over the years as a guest, and they've appeared on his live shows as guests as well... but he didn't rejoin the Doobies as a full member until 2020.
Just a feel free good all over song. The tune, the singers, the band all grooving perfectly and taking the audience to a beautiful place. Makes me smile.
These two singers are the original members! Pat Simmons on lead vocal and guitar, Tom Johnston backing vocals and guitar. Tom Johnston left the band years ago and Michael McDonald stepped in. Tom came back later until now.
I love the Doobie Brothers and I love your channel. I especially love your Beatles and Linda Ronstadt videos. Please react to Linda’s incredibly soulful live performance of “Down So Low”. It will leave you speechless. Keep up the great work Jayy🌺✌️
Michael McDonald JOINED the Doobie Brothers. They were a band long before Michael McDonald came onboard and they are still a band after he left. The Doobie Brothers put Michael on the map.
Great reaction. Always loved this song. One of the few songs with a soprano sax (I believe) and a pedal steel guitar. Suggest you give a listen to “Dependin’ on You,” which is from the Michael McDonald era.
The only song with Michael McDonald and the doobies that i like is what a fool believes. Tom Johnston is the original and has most of the hits under his belt. Definitely my favorite 👍🏼
This is Pat Simmons on vocals/guitar and there’s Tom Johnston who does Vocals/guitar and Michael McDonald vocals/Keys Pat is more bluegrass, Tom more rock and Michael more soul. I personally prefer the original vocalist Tom & Pat out there Great stuff. There music direction changed with Michael
Me too - by a wide margin. I’ve seen them 7 times with the original lineup and only once with MM. the first thing I ever heard him sing he sounded like he had a mouthful of marbles and I have not heard anything that has changed my mind. It’s not meant to be as harah as that sounds. It’s just personal preference.
The doobie brothers got rid of Michael cause they didn't like the direction the band was taking. The Doobie Brothers influence made Michael who he is..

The Doobies are amazing live. Always worth seeing them.
Bravo! Musicians live, in tune, no gyrating dancers, no pyrotechnics, no lip-syncing, no auto-tune.

I just got CHILLS!

I just saw them for the third time last night and they were fantastic as always. This is definitely a favorite of mine🔥🔥
The instrument was a soprano sax

They split up around 82 and McDonald went on to his solo career. They reformed around 89-90 and released The Doctor with TJ on lead vocals. I think!
