Very fair statement about the 35 1.8. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing the 35 1.2 S before the end of the year. If the 35 1.4 compares decently to the 1.8, and they knock $100 off, I’ll consider it.
I recently picked up the 105mm f/1.4 lens and I *love* it. I kept waffling on the Z 85mm f/1.2 and the Z 135mm f/1.8, but couldn't justify the cost of either since I'm strictly a hobbyist photographer. The old 105, though, scratched that itch at 1/3 the cost. Great lens!
I very recently re-bought the 35mm f/1.8 S lens refurbished from Nikon Store at a decent price. I was never a big fan of this lens when I first bought after its release. However, I decided to give it another try and shoot it a lot. I’m so glad I rebought this lens it gave me confidence to keep using it. Close up family portraits have been spectacular. I’m sure the newly released 35mm f/1.4 is wonderful but, I never felt it could reach “S” class rendering. I’m going to rewatch your video on it.🙏🏻
@@jorsetti optically it definitely won’t reach the S-line nor is it supposed to. I kind of like the idea of f/1.4 not being “as good” though. For the people who that matters to it’s a good proposition
I figure this is a great lens for low light shooters on a budget. Imagine someone getting into concert photography, or taking photos in a dark club. Price and aperture might be the two biggest concerns.
Great to have more choices within a single focal length and at different price points and I'm sure that when it goes on sale for $479 there will be a lot of buyers but I do hope that Nikon still has the resources to concentrate on the more ground-breaking ultra high quality glass that we all crave.
For what’s it’s worth, I still think the 35 1.8 is overpriced based on what you get. The new 1.4 at its price, MIGHT be as well only 100 bucks less. But after I test it ain’t might change my mind
Good thought about the 35/ 1.4 being part of a series of E-line like lenses. Options are good. A 50/ 1.4 would make sense if it were to be very reasonably priced, like 2 to 300 bucks.
I agree. I actually think this lens being a hundred less than the 1.8 is inappropriate since I still believe the 1.8 to be overpriced lol so drop them both by 100 and I’ll stop complaining hahahaha
So Nikon is supposed to let Tamron and Sigma make lenses in the z mount as long as they don't compete with certain focal lengths. Sigma has always made lenses in the same focal length as Nikon lenses in an f/1.4 aperture. Why didn't they let Sigma make the f/1.4 version of the 35mm? There's a lot of other lenses Nikon could be spending their time and resources on than a 35mm f/1.4.
I agree. I’ve long had a theory that the 1.8 lenses are good enough with their light gathering and bokeh that there really didn’t need to be Nikon made f/1.4s and third party would fill up that gap for anyone with the in between budgets of Nikon 1.2’s and 1.8’s. But I was wrong I guess and that’s why I don’t make speculation videos lol
@ZWadePhoto I have the 28mm and 40mm for street photography and other things. I don't know that I'll ever own a 35mm. It's possible but not likely. I have a 24-70mm if I need 35mm. But I would like to see the f/1.2 for everyone that needs it. A lot of people have complained that Nikon doesn't have enough lenses. They have done a good job hitting every focal length that needs to be filled up to this point. They even have some economy lenses like you mentioned with the Tamron lenses branded with the Nikon label. From what I've heard, a lot of the Sony lenses are either not very good or they have several different versions of the same focal length. Canon is already coming out with their second version of the 70-200mm lens. Nikon got everything right the first time with their lenses. I do think there will be a 105mm f/1.4 similar to what they had in the f mount. It was better for portraits than the 105mm macro lens. A bit faster too. And Nikon needs some tilt shift lenses for those that need them.
@@carlmcneill1139 I don’t subscribe to the idea that Nikon doesn’t have enough. They have covered a LOT of ground in the short time Z has been going. The only thing really missing now are more niche things with smaller consumer base. Super wide fast prime, tilt shift, etc
I still wonder if this is the lower cost route to a fast "normal" for crop sensor cameras that just happens to cover full frame as well. The shorter register distance compared to the F-mount makes this simpler to achieve f1.4 than was economically possible for the 35/1.8DX compromise lens whose goal was that low cost normal for DX.
Nikon Ricci has confirmed the 35mm 1.2 S is still on the roadmap. This 35mm 1.4 is definitely for a completely different market and it’s a great option for a little character and will work superbly with the Zf and smaller bodies like Z67 line up
Don't know about this lens but I think that Tamron 35mm f1.4 G and the Zeiss 35mm f2 distagon are still great choises for the Z mount. With the FTZ adapter of course😊
Not sure if you’re aware but Ricci did go on record to say a premium 35mm is still coming.
I mentioned that sometime around the 6 min mark. All signs point to the juicy one is still on like donkey Kong

I agree, I’ve thought of Nikon as a lens maker first and camera in close second. I want that stuff that has Canon rethinking their lens mount haha
How about we make an affordable lens that will support and attract people would be buyers to the Z mount line.
