I came across this video accidentally and I must say it was the best thing that happened to me today. Finally, I found THE interpretation of Waldstein. Such clarity! And the brilliance of Maestro Emil´s sound is just overwhelming! It seems to come from another dimension. I think Ludwig van must have been with him somehow during that recording sessions.
I am currently studying this sonata and I must say Gilels' interpretation one of the best I have heard. His phrasing is arched, his breathing is natural (you can tell based on the phrases), and his clarity is flawless (mov. I). In the second movement, it is incredibly lyrical: there isn't one note that sounds over-pressed, and the tone overal is amazing. Thank you for posting. I haven't heard the third movement yet.
Mmm, lovely. I've listened to many recordings from Bachaus through Richter and beyond, and agree that this has to be one of highest quality performances. A true artist.

This second movement is done so perfectly. His attack and decay of each note is impeccable. All hail a true Beethoven interpreter!

I agree with you. This has to be the best interpretation from a professional concert pianist that I've heard of. :) It's soooooo perfect!
You are correct. THis is the greatest.
"Dedicated to a patron, Count von Waldstein" - from Charles Burkhart Anthology for musical analysis
It sure is clear!
Avec Claudio Arrau, à mon avis Gilels est le meilleur interprète de cette Sonate pour piano nommé Waldstein.
It's dedicated to Ferdinand Von Waldstein. I have a feeling that's where it got it's name.
Another Beethoven's jazz moment at 1:11!
