Apple could use news to train AI

Apple is clearly planning for life in the world of AI and multiple reports in the past few weeks have made it obvious. The company is likely to source data from external entities to train its AI models, and new reports suggest an interesting plan. Apple is reportedly talking to media companies so that it can use their material for the development of its AI chatbot.
It is also mentioned that Apple is willing to pay up to $50 million for a multi-year deal to license the new articles that will be fed to the training models. The report says Apple has reached out to brands like NBC News, IAN which has products like People, the Daily Beast and Better Homes and Gardens among others.
Apple has generally stayed away from taking help from third-party companies for its product development, but AI seems to be an exception as the data needed for training has to be accurate and sourced from the right platforms.
In many ways, Apple’s decision to use data from media companies could help its case and avoid mishaps that we have seen with Microsoft’s AI chatbot related to the US elections content available through the platform to the public.
Reports talk about multiple research papers that highlight the work Apple is doing or at least planning in the AI arena. The details in the papers suggest Apple wants to bring on-device AI technology that could be a big game changer for the industry. In fact, Apple might be working internally to make large language models (LLMs) run on iPhones and iPads, something that could be made possible thanks to the A-series and M-series chips, respectively.
The biggest weapon needed to develop AI is data and Apple doesn’t have it available in abundance, so it is understandable that the company is seeking hardware advancements to make AI push the envelope for its customers. Having a capable AI model also enables Apple to build a new-gen Siri that is as efficient and resourceful as Google Assistant or Alexa.
