My friend.. I too have an E30 and was faced with the same dilemma as you.. The way you described owning one is very true and so I decided never too get rid of mine. I restored it with a ulez compliant engine swap. A lot of money yes.. but I get to keep and drive my beloved E30.
    Keep up the good work.

S54.. E46 M3 power plant. Always wanted an M3..then learned of these type engine swaps. As I love my E30 and a very nice S54 found me.. I couldn’t resist. I believe a E46 330 engine is compliant also. There are a few options my friend.

I Have owned many e30's over the years, & YES , YES YES I would buy another When i Find the Right car.
I Currently run a 1995 e34 525i SE manual. Every bit as good & well built as an e34. but more power out of the 24 Valve M50 engine.
I Have Run e34's since 2008. All Superbly Reliable & All Sold for more than I Paid.
They are FANTASTIC Cars to Own & Drive.
Smooth, Quiet, Balanced, Great Ride & Great Handling on the open roads. They simply MUNCH Motorway miles on long Journeys Leaving you feeling as Fresh as a 5 min local Trip.
I Read Somewhere that they are as smooth & Quiet at 140 mph as they are at 40 mph. Hour after hour on German Autobahns.

It is especially nice to see one in good original condition. So many today have been modified (ruined) with lowered rock hard suspensions, oversized brakes ludicrously large wheels ect. all of which is completely unnecessary. When new the 325i handled just as well as the M3, stopped just as quickly as the M3 and was only 0.2 seconds slower to 100 km/hr. I do hope you are able to keep yours, they are becoming harder to find and more expensive every day.

Awesome! A whole year has gone by, we have been following you on the journey. What are the options if the ULEZ expansion goes ahead? You could store the car on the border of Greater London, and drive out from there. I believe its what is done by many New Yorkers. You may have to shuttle to and fro the lockup with a compliant car you share with the family.

Nice, the e30 is a fantastic car. I had the e30 m3 Evo for 22 years only sold 7years ago 😭, at the same time I also had a Purple 1995 bmw e34 m5 last year model, reluctantly sold at the start of ulez October 2021 😢. I had that for 17 years and loved that car, I also have a 1997 Porsche 993 c2. I reluctantly sold my 1995 e34 m5 because of ulez as I live in central london. I now only drive my Porsche in summer and pay for ulez. But I don’t tax it until summer then drive on occasions. It’s painful but I loved all the cars sold and the current steed 😢. If you can, keep your e30 and use on occasions, at least if it is your forever car that’s what I’d do. Good luck with your decision 👌🏿🙏🏿

Have a German display number plate made up front and back that reads F-909 OYK (same as your UK number but German format) with an EU "Deutschland" emblem on the left border...and see if it fools the ULEZ cameras! "F" prefix on a German plate is for Frankfurt...and you drive a German car just to add to the authentic look, even though BMW is "M"unich based. Alternatively, I can give you a set of Canadian licence plates! Joking aside, considering how much you love your E30, I'd keep it for now and just see how things go with this ULEZ and whether it's manageable for your budget.

You have a lovely car there and you might not find another so good or will cost a you lot more. In the worst case I would keep the car, politicians come and they go and new ones might change policies in the future when people realise that they are being done by these restrictions. Otherwise move out of London, from what I see it's not becoming a nice place to live if all this carries on. Surely it can be a lot cheaper to live elsewhere and a lot less stressful.

Honestly, I've never had to brake hard enough to be sure. But ABS was introduced on E30 models in 1986, and since this is an SE model, which has a high equipment level, it might be fair to assume it does. However, I'll have to try them hard to be sure.

Such a shame that a disgrace of an individual has to give choices like that to people like you who love their old cars. As a car lover myself and a BMW fan at that, I wouldn’t sell that as that would just be letting him win, I would firstly wait to see the outcome of the scam and secondly, if it comes to ulez going ahead, there are places outside of London that aren’t ulez which you can store the car and use it as a weekend car on a ulez free zone. However I understand it is a far fetched option and I definitely can see £12.50 each time becoming very expensive. Lovely car though and a rare find at that.
