RAYE said that when writing the song she had a Nina Simone quote at the top of her mind 'An artists duty as far as I'm concerned is to reflect the times' so this deals with some dark thoughts & themes heartbreak, depression, unhealthy addictions to ease pain, anxiety, insecurities, pressures of social media & labels to look a certain way & conform to algorithms we're all addicted to that's the small waist, blonde hair, self hate etc bit, a song of 3 parts first bit is a note to self like talking into the mirror, second part still about her own personal struggles but also societies too & seeking empowerment, moving towards the light, last bit big band 1920s swing vibe, upbeat, hopeful, emerging from the dark, share the light, banish the dark Genesis let there be light
Also did anyone notice her biting the apple like the original sin I thought that was really subtle but so well executed
Also the old Guy in the audience I think representative of trolls sitting back eating popcorn laughing at other peoples pain for entertainment
Starts like ice cream man in 🛁 bathtub, also you can see references of escapism with black dress and smudged mascara, she even mentions being at the nightclub seeping 🍾..think... All connected

I just hope that the UK. Knows what type of treasure they have in Raye. I mean, she is a gem. She brought back rail music, not just the same repetitive BS, not Tiktok music, real music from the heart, telling a story She's fire. It's been a long time since we've heard an artist like this.

RAYE has strong spiritual roots her Mom and Dad met at Church he was the musical director her Mom in the choir hence the references biting an apple giving into temptation with drugs drink dark thoughts but overcoming them, let there be light for her and for all the ordinary people who struggle in today's world teachers doctors train drivers cleaners etc or those like her who've had heartbreak, the line about Genesis 1.3 let there be light, Genesis also is where we see Adam and Eve, first sin, you can just enjoy the music or you can also look deeper than that, it's commentary really on today's world through the lens of her own experiences, people obsessed with phones, the need for acceptance by peers online, for her the old record label trying to fit her into a mould, body shape, hair etc subscribe and like me, self esteem tied up with how others view you etc
nah when i heard this song at the awards last year, i just knew she was going to come with this magnitude. real, she has always been🥹

You must know that RAYE is in the music industry for 8+ years, but her label emprisonned her and gave her false hopes. That's why she was forced to only do EDM / dance featuring ( i.g : HEY NA NA EHHH, DON'T ACT LIKE U KNOW ME NA NA EH ). Therefore, she was never able to express herself and release her OWN album with HER proper name. So she fell into deep a depression and even took drugs since music is her whole world and it's like they put her a tape on her mouth. Also, a lot of people compare her with Amy Winehouse ( they share this jazzy vibe and they both did and quit the famous BRIT school ).
Last year, her career took a turn, she left the abusive label and released her own album called my 21st Century Blues and SHE ATEE ( go listen to it, it's dope af), winning her 6 BRITs award in the same night. Her most famous song from this album is ofc Escapism ( Tiktok viral btw ) and actually in the MV of Genesis, there is a reference to it : when she looks at herself in the crowd with the spilling mascara, it's the same outfit and makeup than in the Escapism MV, and she even says " Still just a heart-broke bitch. But I traded the back of the nightclub, I did, for the bathroom floor" in reference of the lyrics of Escapism " Just a heartbroke bitch high heels six inch in the back of the nightclub sippin' champagne ".
That's one of my top artist for a long time, I discovered her with the song " Natalie Don't " which is incredible, she deserved to be recognized.
