I lived in that area for decades and drove on that highway many times, but never experienced any dust storms like that. What a tragedy. My condolences for the families and loved ones of those who died. I hope the injured recover. Praying for everyone.

I was in the middle of this on my way to St. Louis. I’ve never experienced a dust/sand storm and didn’t even know it was possible in down state IL. Was honestly terrifying.
I drive a truck and during planting season this happens when the winds pick up. Between there and Decatur can be tricky. I have video similar to the dust storm you're looking at.
So this is a semi-regular thing that was just worse than usual? I'm just asking because it's the '20s, we're having bank failures, and now I'm seeing dust storms. I loved my gramps but I don't really wanna live what he had to go through with the Great Depression
Illinois is mostly farmland. Planting season starts in April/May. Many acres are worked leaving the top soil loose. Every few years or more we get winds over 35mph for a few days. Pushes that top soil for miles. So yes, it happens. Last time I saw it this bad was 5 to 8 years ago. We aren't heading to a dustbowl just yet.

No till farming works but, where I live if, you are changing crop harvest, rotating crops, say from corn to wheat or other grains, you would till, disc, fertilize than plant. Also, maybe the winds being that strong, no till would not have prevented loose soil being dislodged. That part of Illinois is table top flat...flatter than the Great Plains. The land is true, stereotypical, pararie.

We had a couple back in the 70's and early 80's. High winds off a corn field that hadn't been planted yet. About 15 miles north of Peoria

Illinois isnt in a drought though. We've had pretty consistent rain and snow. Unless this is somehow from another state, this shouldn't be happening.

It has been dryer in that area and, with sufficient and sustained windspeed it doesn't take much to turn newly tilled soil into this.
Regardless, drought conditions are not required to produce this.

Dust storms can travel across entire states, so it's possible. The dust bowls in the 30s for example stretched from the great plains states all the way to the east coast.
