    I've been watching these early 2000s games, it's fascinating for me. Doesn't feel that long ago but it really is, so much has changed in football and in life. The things the commentators say, the atmosphere and crowds, the way football was played, it just seems like 100 years ago or something?

      Maybe if England games were played around the country more often there would be lots of fans around England being able to watch England games and there would be lots of great atmospheres. We play N Macedonia at Old Trafford in June, hope that is good

    One of the reasons the crowd enjoyed this victory so much was due to the disrespect shown by pundits and the press in the build up to this game. For example, the memorable headline: 'Rooney, the wonderkid versus the window cleaner.'

      I remember a headline from the sun that stuck with me from the draw of the 2010 World Cup. It put the first letter of each country in England group in big bold letters. And it read like this
      E ngland
      A lgeria
      S lovenia
      Y anks
      Many English fans will agree our press are so mouthy and disrespectful. I believe it’s that mindset that held us back after the Euros in 96. Iceland done us a favour by humbling our press. I get we want to big up our team and put a bit of fire into the fans. But we don’t need to be arrogant 🔔 ends.

      At international level, he was lethal. Slightly slower pace suited him down to the ground and it helped that Sanchez set up the entire team to feed him. He was prolific the following campaign. What a legendary win for Northern Ireland ! There are some of these older England games being uploaded where their squad is weird (possibly due to injuries) and the lineup is awful, but not in this game, where they boasted a very strong XI of world class players and were basically at full strength. As an Englishman with mixed British and Ulster heritage, despite primarily being an England fan I have always been delighted at this result and absolutely love that Northern Ireland won it. Hopefully it’s not too long before the two nations face each other in international football again.

    Wrighty went off on a right rant and rightly so England were so poor that night. Alan Hansen summed it up dishevelled, disjointed, played liked novices I dunno formation Sven was trying to play I mean he was under pressure after the 2nd half horror show which resulted in a walloping against Denmark he tried to be smart and it backfired and deservedly so he did that at the World Cup playing 1 up front which never worked at all apart against Ecuador where it barely worked. Credit to Northern Ireland one of the great nights at Windsor Park until the Euro 2016 Qualifying run topped even this unbelievable scenes at the end.

      He was playing 4-5-1 with Beckham playing a quarterback role at the base of midfield behind Lampard and Gerrard.
      England were screaming out for Michael Carrick but Sven wasn't prepared to drop either Lampard or Gerrard. Carrick didn't even reach 50 caps for England, a criminal waste.
      Before the game, Tord Grip (England coach) had a measuring tape out measuring the width of the pitch. NI had narrowed the pitch to the minimum FIFA approved size. That being the case, it's a mystery why England thought packing the midfield would be a good - it played right into NI's hands. Beckham did, however, play well in this game, in the first half at least.

      The 1st half was one of the worst England has ever played. How Rooney stayed on the pitch past HT is beyond me. Weak mgmt from Sven. Although the fact this was his 1st defeat in a qualifier 4 & half years into the job is some going. Parallels with Southgate today. Chirpy England fans thinking they have a right to walk teams over would do well to remember Taylor, Hoddle, Keegan and Shteve MacLaren.

      @Sillygoooose624 Год назад +1

      Between 2002 to 2008 was a set of generation talents England had - but there were other great teams in that generation too England didn't bear - (Portugal - Rui Costa, Figo, Ronaldo, Simao, Deco, Carvalho) (Brazil - Cafu, Carlos, Lucio, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho)
      Failing to qualify for the 2008 Euros is the biggest failure against this generation. Beckham was still quality then, and Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United were leading European football - with likes of Lampard, Gerrard, Cole,Terry, Wio, Joe Cole, Carrick, Scholes, Rooney all playing top level.

    • @encorefootball
      @encorefootball Год назад +1

      @Tommmmo92 Beyond the starting 11, squad depth was paper thin. Wright-Phillips, Carlton Cole, Nicky Shorey, Andy Johnson, Jenas & Joey Barton were some of whom played for England as well. Another problem was no-one had the balls to drop Lampard and/or Gerrard and make Carrick a regular starter, when England needed a midfielder with better passing range. Owen's injuries and Scholes' age and motivation were other cracks in this group of players. Nowhere near as deep in quality, depth and fitness as today's Southgate generation

    • @Sillygoooose624
      @Sillygoooose624 Год назад +1

      @@encorefootball Totally agree on squad depth - but those players were still playing in PL - although a big step down, it's a cop out to think these players weren't capable to deputise.
      Roque Junior won a WC with Brazil, next moment he's turned up on loan at hellscape of Leeds ffs.
      The Gerrard/Lampard thing will the epitome of this era of England - the tail, wagging the dog. No manager had the balls to actually intrust a principled idea of play into England. Sven was just pick the best XI where possible.
      No reason whatsoever that Gerrard and Lampard couldn't play together - just not in a midfield 2.
      Look at the midfield of this game we are commenting on - Beckham at the base (Pirlo role) Lampard - Gerrard ahead --- fast forward 18 years and that amount of ability even coached under Southgate is frightening.
      Foden is the greatest England midfielder I've seen play since Scholes in terms of natural close touch ability - generation older would say maybe Gazza.
      Declan Rice, Henderson, Phillips are miles behind the talent and abilities of Beckham, Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard - only Bellingham and Foden you'd see talent to compare.
      Fitness wise - I've always believe talent and the player would match the generation fitness wise. Fitness standards/sports science have come leaps and bounds, but good players 15 years ago, would still be recognised as good players today - just fitter.

      @Tommmmo92 England played Macedonia a few days ago and smashed them 7-0. In the qualifiers for Euro 2004 & Euro 2008, England drew with Macedonia 3 times in 4 games. Do you think the quality of international football has dropped off recently?! The likes of Czech Rep, Montenegro, Ukraine & Russia used to give England all sorts of headaches in the mid-2000s, now it's expected for us to smack them 5-0 without even sweating

    • @Sillygoooose624

      @@encorefootball As a kid went to the 2-2 draw against Macedonia at St Mary's - Seaman's first game after Ronaldinho FK, and got lobbed again direct from a corner.
      Don't think it's dropped off - it's probably at a higher standard when you consider footballs progression across Europe. I mean look at Iceland since 2016, Moldova beat Poland 3-2 the other day. Without looking into it, would say African football Internationally has dropped off.
      England and their managers/coaching give themselves headaches at every turn - McLaren failed against Croatia in 2007, Southgate failed against Croatia in 2018.

    So tired of Englands miserable losing record over 60 years. Ive watched them since 80. Many top class players winning CLs and PLs, but put that white shirt on and they just dont perfom, wont perform, cant perform. 1996 and 2020 were their best chances to win something, Wembley matches too. Engs record must be the most embarrassing in football. The only big football nation to win nothing from 1968. 28 tournaments, 28 failures, with the worst penalty shoot out record. Czech Rep, Greece, Denmark, Holland, Croatia, France, Italy, Spain, Braz, Arg, Germany have all done better. It puts England alongside Turkey, S Korea, Uruguay, and Belgium in terms of S Finals only. The "golden generation". Sad, because England were stuffed with talent but it was wasted because of Sven's regressive, risk-adverse tactics and terrible team selections.
      With the right manager who picked the right players (someone who was prepared to play Michael Carrick and drop either Lampard or Gerrard), this England side could have been legitimate challengers, maybe even champions.
      Instead, you had rigid 4-4-2 with no natural left winger except for Stewart Downing, hence Lampard, Rooney or even Scholes (!) on the left wing.
      Ironic really, that Sven was only really criticised in these games towards the end of his reign when he finally tried something different.
      It was all hype in the end but it could have been so different. The talent was definitely there. As a NI fan, I'm sad that this England team never came close to reaching its potential.

      That ones up for debate. Identify is a VERY confusing thing in NI. Also anytime I go abroad and tell people I'm from Northern Ireland they say 'Oh you're Irish'? What's even weirder is Ian Paisley, ex leader of the DUP Identified as Irish.

    • @MALEXI10
      @MALEXI10 3 месяца назад

      Before partition, many unionists identified as Irishmen despite rarely being ethnically Irish. Almost all unionists were of British descent, primarily Scotstish and English and to a much smaller extent, Welsh.
      The question is, what matters more, ethnicity or geography? You can't say that the unionist British in Northern Ireland can be fairly represented as Irish.

    • @Ilovecats1236
      @Ilovecats1236 3 месяца назад

      Today, I definitely wouldn't call your average Unionist 'Irish' because that's not how probably 98% of Unionists today would see themselves. However I think it was fair at the time for unionists before partition to identify as Irish because some did have irish Catholic roots, and others who possibly didn't were born and raised in Ireland and obviously felt Irish to identify as that.
      Unionists born after partition most likely stopped seeing themselves as Irish due to them not identifying with the irish nationalist majority in Ireland and I think the final nail in the coffin for any 'Irish Unionist' was the beginning of the troubles.

      Not true. Northern Ireland beat England in 1972 and 1957 and a few draws in between. They also beat England in 1927 but back then Northern Ireland didn't play under the name 'Northern Ireland' they played just as 'Ireland' until 1954.

      @@Ilovecats1236NI played as Ireland until the late 1970s in British Championship matches. It was only FIFA (and later UEFA) matches that were affected by FIFA's ruling in the mid-50s.
      Something to do with our friends in the south trying to steal our name (as well as our history!). FIFA did at least recognise the IFA as the legitimate custodians of the Ireland team. Hence the quirk that Northern Ireland are the fourth oldest international football side in the world, even though the country was only founded in 1921.

      No, it's not. We've had several wins down the years. And of course you should remember, NI are the reigning British champions, having won the last two British Championships held in 1980 and 1984.
      Still British Champions. England don't want to play us, must be scared or something. 😂 I don't believe NI and England have ever played a friendly match.
      But we're still British Champions. I'm sure we'd be happy to put our title on the line. But your lot don't seem to be up for the challenge...

      He was a technically accomplished player, an excellent finisher with a good long range shot on him. He just lacked pace which is why he never made it in the premier league.
