  • Christmas is coming to Acton Scott, but first there's a huge amount of preparation to do. Ruth Goodman and food historian Ivan Day try their hand at making a Christmas pudding using the same methods as Bob Cratchit's wife in A Christmas Carol.
Meanwhile, Alex and Peter light the forge for the first time to re-shoe the farm workhorse Clumper - the first time a horse has been shod at this forge in over five decades.
Alex goes in search of a Christmas tree for the banquet, while Ruth and Peter head for the Victorian town of Blists Hill for Christmas shopping. At the cottage, Ruth meets Debbie Bamford to dye an array of colourful Christmas ribbons to decorate the tree and the presents that sit beneath it.
Finally it's time for the Christmas meal in the estate's School Hall. With a rapturous toast to Queen Victoria and a quick trip to the cattle shed to wassail the animals, day turns into night and the drunken Victorian parlour games commence. The next morning it'll be time for the team to bid a fond farewell to Mr Acton as they depart Acton Scott for good.

Love the side eye look the cow gave to the singers. Made me chuckle as I imagined his thoughts.

My grandmother lived in the time if Victoria and would have done much that you presented here. She did have a tradition-which I don't know if it was common tradition or just her own family- of the Christmas cake. A cake was baked with a charm inside. The icing was scored for the slices to be cut. The one who gets the charm is said to have good luck in the coming year. My grandmother had her charm beacelet, as did my mother and aunts, from this tradition

Yes and as years passed we would put a silver sixpence in the cake or Christmas pudding. They also used to put them inside Halloween cakes but as time passed it was no longer allowed for safety reasons in case of choking! ♥️🎄

This tradition is still alive on my country. The cake is just a huge wheel shaped (empty center) cut in half and filled with whipped cream. Two things are inside: a charm (good luck) and a raw bean. The one who gets the raw bean must pay for the entire cake, though usually it’s just for giggles.

It’s so interesting how many cultures share a similar tradition. I can’t say for certain, but I’d guess that it originates back to The British. I know my Carrie’s over the tradition from Mexico. There’s some differences, but the spirit is there.

My mother was a strict Catholic and we had Advent until midnight on Christmas Eve, so we didn't decorate the tree until Christmas Eve night. Usually we got to bed after 3 am.
    Just like the Victorians.

Although I was born in the 1980s my family’s 40 acre farm was plowed, planted, cut, baled, and fertilized using horse drawn equipment from the late 1800s. Not being mechanically inclined, horses were much easier to keep running. In my late teens I was made responsible for shoeing our team of Belgian draft horses. Our mare, Dolly, would stand still occasionally nuzzling my back ; her partner Dick, was another story altogether! He would get bored standing still and would incrementally shift his weight away from his 3 grounded hooves and onto my back! The sneaky devil would need an elbow to his “armpit” to wake him up and bear his own weight while I finished the job! ❤. Dick and Dolly have been gone 20+ years now but I still think of them often and wish we were still farming together.

The need to check things out more thoroughly is here in concern with the Christmas cards and the Puritans trying to dissuade people from buying them. It is because they depicted children drinking wine again It was that they had children drinking wine on them.

I recall when I visited England in 1977; I was at my Grandma's home and after she had offered me mincemeat tarts I asked her what suet was and why was it the tarts? Being a vegetarian it didn't go over well with me when she said it was fat......still don't understand why they feel it is necessary to put fat in them....
