You are just about the best photography teacher I’ve ever seen on RUclips, who deserves way more views than you get. I don’t think anyone else could’ve explained this video as well as you have. It is very reassuring actually to watch this video and know what the problems are before you talk about them, because I have come across them myself. Manual all the way! I’ve learnt a great deal from watching your videos over the years and I can’t tell you how much of a comfort it has been to watch your videos and see how you explain things so well, so thoroughly and in such a friendly manner. It’s made me feel more confident with my own photography business.
He has to be one of the best photography instructors ever. Very well organized.Well explained. Excelelnt examples so you can see what happens under different circumstances. Simply excellent.
I just wanted to mention that the model was wonderful in the way she was very engaged throughout the whole presentation. It certainly contributed to the viewability of the instructional video. It was truly a collaborative effort.
I like that Kindra is laughing instead of boring looks other models (must) present. TTL works great when using a single flash only. Thank you once again for this wekk understandable and informative Video. Regards from Hamburg.
Another great photo video Mark. Although one thing you didn't mention was that in the manual mode, you should have the camera settings adjusted so that without the flashes operating, you get a black or unlit photo. This is done so that those two very bright windows in your studio don't add any ambient light that you don't want. Otherwise, it was a great "What Not to Do" video. I have found that although the "Auto" features on modern cameras are good in some instances, if you use them, the camera will invariably change something because it can and this will mess up a number of your images. If you are in the studio, manual is the way to go as you have control of everything!
Mark, great job on fouling everything up, then fixing it. This video gives me confidence now that when I fall into one of these traps I'll be able to - without panic - identify and fix. This is also a great lesson on not putting the client/subject in front of the camera until your "mannequin" test shot looks good! Thank you.
The Master at work! While watching one of your videos years ago I picked up a pen and pad to take notes for the first time while watching a RUclips video! Keep up the great work!
Hi Mark, I loved your clear and coherent treatment of this subject. Really helpful. I only shoot manual in the studio, but rather than high speed sync I put my Fuji X100F, with its leaf shutter, to the test. The Fuji has a natural flash sync up to 1/2000" of a second. Yep, one two thousandth of a sec. In the studio, I found that my big strobe worked fine up to around 1/800 sec, after that the light was falling off. No barring like a focal plane, but not just enough light. Yep my studio light took 1/800th sec to deliver all its light, but at 1/1600 sec the shutter was twice as fast. It had opened and closed half way through the light delivery. Now I have strobes with "Freeze" which will fire at 1/8000 sec. And many speed lights will deliver all the light that is metered in 1/2000 sec at lower powers. This could be a fun one for you.
you make everything clear. Thanks. I think i can do like this : i turn off the filling light and take shoot in ttl getting correct exposure and then switch the key light to manual mode to fix that value. I turn on the filling light.
Hi Mark, I use up to 3 Yongnuo Speedlight for background and hair lights and 3 Godox AD200's for Main and Rim Lights all with HSS. First I put the Yonguo 622C transmitter, and since it has a hotshoe on top, I put the Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark II trigger on top of the Yongnuo. Now I can control the 3 Yongnuo flashes via the camera flash menu and the 3 Godox lights via the Flashpoint trigger's screen. All using HSS if necessary and have never misfired :-) The same could be done with e.g your Flashpoint flashes and the Profoto's by using the small Falshpoint R2's or R2 Mark II, the ones with the passthrough hotshoe on top, and connect the Profoto trigger on top, although you cannot mix and match 3 types of triggers with HSS, but you can mix and match 2 types or brands with HSS very successfully :-)
Does people really use TTL in a studio? And who uses 1/500 in a studio with flash? The flash is supposed to freeze the motion, not the shutter. And all other lights don’t have HSS.
Paul, see my comment. I added a bit about TCM that might help you understand TCM, which is a nice feature to have, but it might not have much application in this overly complex setup.
Since the hair lights were reflecting off the soft box or front wall, shouldn't the key light be turned down slightly to compensate and avoid the hot spot on her face?
Hi Mark, all your videos are really good. I did a shooting with 1 speedlite and 1 strobe, both same brand, and the problem I had was not exposure but an all green or blue picture only on some of them, must turned out fine , I haven’t figure out why this happens. Do you have any idea of what it could be ?
So glad I caught this tutorial. Very important! When you control ambient, can you predict flash outcomes with experience, or do you have to test the variables each time?
Systems Engineers have to integrate equipment so all the bits perform as one. That lower clamshell might have had a setting that ignored the preflash from the key, but obeyed its main bang. In that case, you could have continued with TTL as long as you manually adjusted the output of the lower clamshell. You never declared whether the lower clamshell had that feature. Instead, you declared using TTL was wrong, switched to manual, and grabbed a handheld meter. I don’t have any non-compatible TTL flashes, but I did have to add Godox radio receivers to my two Nikon SB-600s to make them work with my Godox speedlight with built in radio receiver and my Godox radio trigger on the camera. You might have a nice handheld meter, but I figure it has nowhere near the capability of a full TTL equipped set of lights. The capability of getting all the lights at their individually correct power with one test shot is the result of very fine Engineering and it puzzles me why a lot of RUclips creators don’t seem to appreciate that. Another comment referred to TCM meaning transfer to manual, a button on my Godox trigger. After the test shot, if you press it, it instructs each flash to keep the power setting it just used and drop out of TTL. Now you can take a series of shots with the model moving a bit but flash power will not vary. Might make editing a bit easier.
No. You do not have TTL unless you use the same brand trigger. You cannot use TTL with mixed lighting, because the trigger is not the same. That’s a Godox Trigger, so, it will only talk to the Godox strobe, not the rest of them.
Personally, you over complicated the scenario. Also, title is misleading. It’s not the “speedlight mixing with strobes” an issue. It’s due to TTL interfering with the optical trigger of the strobe light.

Nice one again Mark. Camera and flash always in manual. Years ago there was no auto, HSS or ETTL. How times have changed.

I’ve been following Adorama & Mark Wallace, and others, in my learning and can honestly say I’m actually not lost in what’s being said.
Wonderful Video. Thank you very much to both of you.
Excellent tutorial.
Wow!! Such a talented educator. Thanks so much.

Thanks Blake - def a cool affect to play around and have fun with!
One of your best videos. Thanks Mark
Another great video, Mark. Thank you.
Thanks Mark! I love how you explain things.
Nice informative video, but the title is misleading. Issue is not speed light vs studio strobe, but mixing modes.
This was a good explanation for those that are just starting out.
Great tutorial and lovely model
When the speed flash is set to Manual mode there is no "pre-flash" as in E-TTL. Is that correct? Thank you.
That's right. There is no need for pre-flash in manual mode.
Thank you for this video. Very informative!
Beautiful model ♡ Mark
Thank you very much. What a smile :-)

Great video. What lens was used
I'm thinking she still needs a VERY GENTLE splash of light going into her eye sockets. VERY Beautiful!
great video, extremely helpful. Question, what if you did not have a lightmeter, can you just use ETTL/TCM?
Do as Lindsay Adler and use none. Shoot and adjust to taste :-)

👍Nice video, looks amazing. 😊
What about using multiple brands of Speedlight and strobe, but they all support TTL?
Great video! helpful tips 😇

Hi Sir
Happy world Photography Day,
Ur are like (Dictionary of Photography) to me.
Mark, what are the dimensions of your studio space?
What about the white balance of those flashes

He failed to mention about s1 and s2 optical slaving.
He mentioned that at 2.00
