Thanks for the review! This sounds like a blast. I also held a poll on my channel recently to decide my next book, and Bob Shaw also seems to have won that one with his novel Night Walk. I expect to start it this weekend.
Hey mate, cheers! Yeah, worth a read I'd say. Yeah, i saw that! I voted for When the Sleeper Wakes btw :D Looking forward to hearing what Night Walk is like. Does this mean the spinner is out of action!?
@@newsfromthegelding The bookspinner isn't going away! I'm just combining it with other methods for managing my TBR. I've changed my book review format now so I review three books in each video, and one of those will always be decided by the bookspinner! Thanks for voting. I'm very curious about that H. G. Wells book and will definitely get round to reading it at some point. I voted in your current poll for The Three-Body Problem. I read it a few years ago and plan to read the series again in a group read-along starting in September.
@@bookspin Ah, I'm glad the spinner is staying! It's also cool to get other people involved in the choosing though. Especially when, like me, I seldom do any research for the next book to read and almost always go for an attractive cover! For my own poll, I think Slan by van Vogt will win this time... but I couldn't help myself and started reading The Three-Body Problem! So good! Yeah, I saw that you've started reviewing three books now. Crikey, are you a very quick reader? I'm pretty slow and only get around an hour per day for reading so I often struggle to get one book reviewed in a week!
@@newsfromthegelding Glad you're enjoying it! If you enjoy The Three-Body Problem, you will be blown away by its sequel The Dark Forest! Actually I'm not a particularly fast reader. I'm trying to read one book a week at the minute but it's not always possible. I just like the idea of discussing a few books in one sitting with a move towards longer form content.
@@bookspin Yeah, its the Dark Forest that I'm looking forward to, a number of other people have said how good it is... and dark! I try to read a book per week too, although the larger ones put that schedule out of the window. That's a good idea though!
I've only read 3 Bob Shaw books : The Palace of Eternity, Other Days, Other Eyes and Cosmic Kaleidoscope (which is short stories) and all are worth a read. I'll add Ship of Strangers to my TBR list.
Definitely worth a gander I'd say! I'm going to make it a priority to start collecting Shaw's other books now. Really glad I didn't abandon him after Shadow of Heaven. Cheers for commenting mate!
yeah the I like remainded books. If I hadn't got it, it would've been trashed probably. Saved it from extinction. Never read this one, great review. And that heave-ho of the abridged version was so well timed and executed.
Cheers Rich! It's always sad to think of books that somehow slip through the net and end up being pulped! Really glad I read this one. Haha! Cheers, that was a particularly brutal heave-ho! :D
Cheers for the comment! I've got a copy of Who Goes Here, so that'll be the next one I read of his. I've also added Nightwalk and Palace of Eternity to my list of books to acquire! Thank you!
Ship of Strangers seems to be Shaw's homage to A.E. van Vogt's Voyage of the Space Beagle. Shaw dedicates the book to van Vogt, and its structure has some similarities to van Vogt's book. I preferred Ship of Strangers over Voyage of the Space Beagle though - van Vogt has great wild ideas but his writing can be clunky, while Shaw is a more polished writer.
Ah, that's interesting. I've yet to read Beagle, although I recently acquired it in a book haul. I just checked my book, I'd missed that dedication to van Vogt. Yeah, this book was really nicely written, a pleasure to read. I've got a book vote thing going at the moment and Vogt's Slan is currently in the lead, so hopefully I'll be reading that next. Cheers for commenting!
