The banana massacre is actually a really dark part of the Colombian history, 2000 workers died because they asked for better work conditions. The only good part of it, one of the workers found by accident a bush of coffe, that moment being the first time Colombia started to use coffe as one of its ways to make money.
@@arkvoodleofthesacredcrotch6060 Hahahahaha, I don't know, it happend years ago, and that was what my history teacher told me, but it makes sense, the worker was running for his life across the mountains where they always got the Bananas, he fell down a slide and avoided death, as things calmed down, he just got out of his hiding spot and saw a coffe bush.
The banana as we know it could disappear!! The banana we eat today is called Cavendish, the one before that that everyone was buying was called Gros Michel. It was sweeter and bigger than the Cavendish. In the 1950s a disease killed basically all of those (some private farms still grow some Gros Michel bananas in a highly controlled environment, but those are very expensive). The Cavendish was immune to that particular fungal infection. But now there is another strain of it called the TR4 that affects even the Cavendish (actually that is not new, it's been known for at least 30 years, unfortunately there is no cure. There are however bananas that are immune to TR4). Genetically modified bananas have been made to be immune to TR4, but we don't like GMO, so scientists have been cross breeding bananas but so far they haven't been successful to make a banana that tastes as good as the Cavendish, doesn't have a ton of seeds in them and is immune to TR4. The future of the banana is looking pretty grim.
If only there wasn’t such a heavy push back against GMO’s. That could be millions of peoples lively hoods saved by a scientificly proven method that is also safe and reliable. Im pretty sure Havaii’s papaya industry also had a similar insident with a decease that almost entirely wiped the fruit from the island and would have ended the entire industry. But GMO’s were used to in exactly the way you mentioned, by giving the papayas immunity.
@@tatuvarvemaa5314 there are other bananas that are immune to this TR4 infection. Some are also sweeter than the Cavendish but they might not have the same shape or color so it's hard to market it when most people are used to the yellow banana.
In my senior year I did a project in my accounting class about united fruit company (now Chiquita) and all the ridiculously intense things they did for bananas. We put a bunch of stupid bullshit memes on it like the sad SpongeBob picture and the really detailed troll face. I got a B
Unfortunately, this actually a part of the history of my country. I don´t remember all of the details of this particular event (if you want to know more about it I recommend reading the seventh chapter of the book Colombia a nation in spite of its self, by David Bushnell) in wich after the banana company United Fruit Company, refused to improve the working condition of its workers and their salaries, they threaten the government of president “Miguel Abadía Mendez” in 1928 with leaving or military retaliation (I quite don’t remember what was the actual cause) which forced the government to choose the company’s side. At the end the government solution to deal with the strikers was to send in the troops and open fire. The official tall of casualties is 13, but historians say is more accurate to say there where between 60-75 casualties, but there’s also local re telling of the event: that say that there where trains full of them at the end of the day. So it depend of who you believe in, but regardless of that it´s true that that was a horrible chapter of my countries history.
Definitely give it the ole’ checkeroo but coming from a history masters grad, that was indeed a thing. Corporations did horrible things for “rare” fruits.
I’d argue Medium doesn’t present itself as “journalism”, it’s just a journal that people can submit their own (hopefully, the site should have a page about their process) peer-reviewed articles to about their interests, apparently this man doesn’t think enough people understand the global hegemonic force that is bananas. Markiplier could submit an article about the dangers of internet fame and it would still be “credible” even though he isn’t a journalist.
Okay so for anyone who doesn't know, a "Believer" is a term that diehard Christians use for themselves vs like... "face value" or "Christmas and Easter Church Only" Christians
If you want to hear more about the rediculesness and pretty gruesome history of the banana industry, you should check out Sam o’Nella academy and his video on it. It pretty wild what happened.
This is why I love Wade. You can expect a 39% comedy article, 59% intriguing article that is very interesting while Bob and Mark will try to make it funny, and the last 2% is poor content or not interesting topic.
In the documentary Zeitgeist: Addendum, author and "economic hitman" John Perkins talks about United Fruit as well as the process of economic colonization of third world countries by particularly powerful and influential corporations, banks, and the United States government. Perkins talks a lot more about it in some of his books as well. It's really fascinating (and scary/concerning) stuff.
Wade, I hate to tell you this.... Most people who call themselves journalists are hacks nowadays. That meme about being a Google expert is what they are.
I have watched every video that has been posted and I still have no idea what videos these clips come from! I re-watch videos and still can't find where they came from!?
Guys... You have NO IDEA how bad the... "News Article" issue is. The nature and validity of research and evidence via citation is crumbling into dust as we speak.
@@nowayjerk8064 It's not even as good as that. The "fake news" is written by someone who understands stories and knows what news s supposed to look and sound like. 147 news anchor spouting the same story WORD FOR WORD is one thing. It's getting worse. They're just making redundant citation using redundant citation of opinion articles which are written by the party using said citation. It's not even news. It's "That guy said this is true!" And "That guy" is someone quoting an article by the person talking in which they say the thing is true without substantiation. Then they use the circular citation as evidence. It's... gone a bit wahoonie shaped.
Its cute bob thinks a " professional journalist " is any more reliable a source then an "amateur" especially with all that's come out in the last few years.
Also, idk if the skepticism about the website is entirely fair - while I understand, I do think there needs to be a platform where people can write stories without having to be a paid journalist to do so. I get that it becomes a problem when people use non credible articles to back up ridiculous claims, but if you can go to the article and there are no primary sources, no citations, no supporting evidence from third parties, etc etc then you should be able to easily debunk the claim. Lmao. I think calling it journalism isn’t a problem - I think the biggest problem is formatting the website in such a way that it APPEARS like a credible news website. Making it aesthetically look like a news website or news journal or research article etc is a problem, and that should fall on the owners of the website itself. At the very least, have a subtitle that makes it clear what the website is, like how Reddit’s is “The Front Page of the Internet”, have it be like “Medium: The Place Where Everyone Can Write” or something like that. Idk. Lol. I think the free speech aspect of ot is important, but the whole “making it look like a professional news site” is disingenuous.
My roommate who's majoring in journalism strongly disagrees. Journalism is INTENDED to be as objective as possible. It is not about your OWN personal beliefs, but reporting OTHERS beliefs and evidence (if possible).
They stopped posted them in youtube. They made a livestream and talk a little about it but to resume... Money. Their sponsors and everyone who allow them to make podcasts don't care about youtube. For them, the views here didn't count... So not only to get money... but also to be able to keep their podcast on, they need to reserve it for podcast services... (like spotify). But, they will keep posting shorts here... and they also want to do livestream time to time on youtube too, to kind of... compensate.
That was the most "Oooh, look, a butterfly!" moment I had ever witnessed. lol
I'm imagining during one of horrible events in the history of bananas during the slaughter they all stop to look at a butterfly!
Oh my Banana.... That is so true
reminds me of the "look over there" bit

I'm totally fine GMO (to a reasonable extent), so if that's what it takes to save the world's Bornana's then so be it

The Banana massacre is one of the darkest episodes of Colombian history, unfortunately.
you could have titled this, "the bloody backstory behind bananas and their believer"
they listened
apparently theres numerology behind the number 239 that could support the believer thing being weird internet code
