Suga and IU have born same year and in korean culture (what I have heard) that is meaningful as being friends. IU is Sugas guest in next Suchwita💜

"Both the song and its music video are open to interpretation, but many fans believe that “Eight” could be a letter to her late friends, SHINee‘s Jonghyun and f(x)'s Sulli. Jonghyun passed away in 2017 at age 27, and Sulli passed away in 2019 at age 25.
In the “Eight” music video, a lizard appears first on an air vent, then in an aquarium, on the window of IU’s plane, and then transforms (evolves) into a dragon. The dragon flies into the sky to catch a girl in white. Together, they fly by IU’s plane as she looks tearfully out the window. Some fans have theorized that the lizard/dragon could represent Jonghyun, who loved the Pokemon Charmander, while the girl in white could be Sulli." - Koreaboo article
There are a lot of cues to the shared history of KPop, but for me, one of the most telling was from an interview that Sulli did which had a bit of controversy due to her honesty:
Dong Yeob asked Sulli: "When did u feel the happiest?"
Sulli answered: "I have never been happy."
So to start the song asking: "So are you happy now??" very much seems like a call back to that moment.
Side note about that look at the end of the mv, the screen reads: would she like to save all her memories?

When my friend passed away, I listened to this song a lot. Through every thing that's happened, there's so much of her in everything I do.
In the video, her dreams have the feel that someone is clearly missing, and that is how I feel now. Like everything moves around me and I'm just frozen in these memories of a happier time.

Thank you for your honest response to this video. It’s important to normalize discussion of this topic, so that those in need feel less afraid to speak about it themselves. The holidays can be hard for many people. I hope you and all your viewers take care of themselves and gain strength. ❤

This song feels different after losing Moobin from Astro. I never thought something like this would happen. There is not a day that I do not miss him and feel his absence. But I appreciate everything he left for his Aroha fans. This song feels deeper.

Thank you for your reaction! This is one of my favorite collaborations between a BTS member and another artist. Yes, it’s a startlingly sad song because it sounds a bit upbeat. I love the live version they sang in IU’s Palette because who doesn’t love Suga singing?

The machine in the video was a memory machine, as you said. It was giving her the option to erase the memories of her lost friends. At the end of the video, she chose to keep the memories. The loss of her friends is devastating, but she would rather keep those feeling and also be able to remember the good times with her friends, rather than lose both the pain and the good times. I've seen an explanation for the end of this song that was absolutely chilling to me. She smiles but then the smile fades and she's almost glaring at the camera. I've heard that the lyrics, "So, are you happy now? Finally happy n ow are you?" have a double meaning. She's wondering if her lost friends are at peace and happy, as you said, but she's also asking if the "keyboard warriors" who hounded her friends are happy with the results of their actions.
Thank you for talking about such a sensitive topic. My life has been a never-ending cycle of pain, with a brief moment of happiness sprinkled in. Right now, I'm at a very low point in my life, but I'm trying to stay optimistic. I know that there are people who love me and would be practically destroyed if I tried to end everything, so, for their sakes, I won't do anything like that. I hope that the bonds that you have with the people who care about you will give you the strength to keep fighting, too. Borahae!

When this song was 1st released there were those who claimed it was about getting older and IU was reflecting on her past. This idea has been totally abandoned however. Looking at the total aspect of the song and within the context of events there is only explanation. While IU did say this song was part of her age series, that comment throw many people in the wrong direction. IU also stated the song was about her 27th year which is depicted in the MV with the 27 Pearl's attached to her arm. So let's start there. IU stated that her 27th year was a difficult year. So why is she talking about her 27th year when the Song, according to those other people is about her reflections on her life? Well the fall of her 27th year 2019, just before she started her Love Poem concert tour one of her very best friends Sulli committed suicide. Sulli became the 2nd of her good friends to have passed away by suicide. The other being Junghyun of Shinee 2 years earlier in 2017. Then during her 2nd concert in Seoul during the concert she learned of the suicide death of yet another friend Goo Hara. IU had a difficult time finishing the concert. IU's concert tour finished in Dec of 2019 and IU wrote the lyrics to this song, or at least finished it in the first part 2020 and it was released in on May 6 (5/6). Where we get the 2nd play on the number 8. IU and Suga both being 28 and 28 + 28 = 56. Then has shown in the video the #8 is turned sideways to become the infinity sign meaning FOREVER. And finally IU had known Sullie for 8 years at the time of her death. The meet when they cohosted a show together. IU had even gotten Sullie a part in the Kdrama Hotel Del Luna, where IU was the female lead and aired in 2019.
8 is totally different than the other songs in her age series. In those songs she mentions her age and the entire songs are about things that people at those ages feel and are dealing with. They are universally relatable in that regard. In 8 her age is never mentioned and the issues she is dealing with is any but universal.
The 3 friends are all represented in the MV. Goo was found of lizards, Junghyun had a connection to a Pokemon character that is a dragon. And Sulli is the girl in white.
The animation scenes are used to distinguish between the living and the dead. The animation with Suga and IU is in 3d. The scenes with Sulli and the Dragon are in 2d.
The location of the shot is a 2 story house. Sulli lived in and was found in her 2 story house. Sulli was known by the nick name Peach. IU had written a song dedicated to her called Peach and in one of the scenes in the house there is a Peach shaped lamp in the background.
There is even more that overwhelming points to what the actual topic of those song is about. The evidence is so overwhelming that no one still argues the opposite anymore.
And you have the lyrics themselve. Are you happy now finally happy now. Then she says she feels like she has lost everything, later she adds she doesn't want to love anybody again, because they just come and go as they please without even a goodbye. These lyrics make no sense as a simply reflection on ones life. But within the context of losing 3 people to suicide the lyrics are full of meaning.
At the end, which you skipped on the 2nd watch, contained very significant material. Her 3 expressions while looking into the camera again make no sense in the reflections context, but within the 3 friends context they make perfect sense. After waking up she smiles knowing that her friends are finally happy now, then her smile turns into a cold stare. This is an aspect that becomes an bigger force going forward, as all 3 friends were subjected to hate commenters. IU is challenging those people with that look. And this isn't the first time IU has through her music addressed hate commenters. Her song BBIBBI was directed at then and rude fans.
There is more to this video as wel. I could write a book on all this MV and all the metaphors, symbolism contained in it. Which by the way is pure IU. While hearing her sing live is best, her MV provide a medium for her to provide a much deeper and richer context to the story she is telling. Her MV's since 2014 are all like this.
