Many chapters are kinda glory hogs about melee. It also helps that even a marine with just a combat knife outclasses far more enemies with his melee than his shooting.
Tabletop rules and video games that always feature loyalist SMs as god mode cheating shits aside.. You underestimate the strength of that armor, it can take laser shots without so much as a scorch mark and the bolter rounds cause minor structural damage to the point that it's actually more efficient to try and go for the weak spots with a melee weapon than to just keep shooting and hoping you dent the armor enough to penetrate. A good chunk of the combat between Loyalist and Traitor Space Marines in lore ends up being in melee due to this, they're super solders after all, they were made to be efficient killing machines.

In a setting as brutal as WH40k, a lot of sfm or other animated shorts lack or fail to capture the brutality. This really shines in that aspect. Being eviscerated by a Tyranid, being crushed under the weight of a SM's armor, being cleaved in two by a single axe swing, and of course the chain axe tearing into that guardsman spraying blood everywhere. It's beautiful, all of it.

Love how we get to see the Guards getting some of the spotlight here- rarely ever get to see that. This was outstandingly well-done. Only major concern is when the Marines clash, as the different camera angles, lighting, and colors all make it hard to tell who's who. But nevertheless, it's amazing- especially as it's not even finished! Whatever you canceled it for, stay awesome!

This is the best slice of filmography I've seen since the intro to Dawn of War I.
The Nids look like they've had some real bad curry, and you've given me a great deal of inspiration with the colour scheme on their skin and disembowelling bits.

I like how that guardsman literally just charged a demonic Space marine with a bayonet
Space marines-have better long range weapons and run into melee
They way you animate and shoot melee combat is glorious. Things are brutal and the cuts aren't rapid. Good job m8.
