Who Was Mary the Mother of Jesus?

  • Jesus’ mother is present in all four of the canonical gospels and legends about her life were elaborated in apocryphal and pseudepigraphal works. Venerated as a saint, over time her cult evolved to fill the gap left by the Christian understanding of God for the divine feminine. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will consider what we can know about the historical Mary and will review the evolution of her mythology.

The story of Jesus and the elders in the temple sounds like a Bar Mitzvah story to me. Present-day bar-mitzvahs are usually conducted in a way almost identical to the description of Jesus' conversation with the elders in Luke. After the bar-mitzvah boy complets his reading of the weekly portion from the Torah scroll on the bima (Hebrew for podium), the revered rabbis who have been invited by the parents to witness the ceremony ask him a series of questions, usually very tough ones, about passages from the Jewish scriptures, or even later Jewish holy writings (the Mishnah, the Gemara,, Rashi Maimonides Mitvah Torah, the Shulchan Aruch, and other post-biblical writings that are considered sacred by Orthodox Jews). The bar-mitzvah boy then answers all or nearly all the these questions correctly. The elders present as witness then exhort him to even more intense Torah study in the future, as well as "deeds of torah"--meaning putting Torah principles to practice in his everyday life. Luke's description of Jesus and the elders in the temple is therefore our earliest witness to the antiquity of the bar-mitzvah ceremony, dating its origin at least as far back to the second temple age.

Certainly, such testing is done in the presence of family and friends. Jesus seems to have slipped away from those folks to have a confab with the religious leaders.
Paul said something curious in Galatians, that he went back to Jerusalem to see if what he was teaching was kosher (so to speak) but only after having spent years preaching his gospel.
I'm sure Jesus was exercising the same muscles. Was His interpretation inline with what the mainstream was teaching? When I got saved again, I tested what I had learned against what my denomination teaches. The doctrines do NOT line up.
So, maybe they had some kind of testing that they performed and I'm sure Jesus went through it. But it was probably not a lot of Rabbinic Judaism, as that sect hadn't taken over Judaism yet. But it was not a formal meeting that Jesus was attending because, if it was, His family would have been there - and they were not.

I think Mark was trying to make Jesus be a NORMAL guy who got raised to divineness for his faith, so for Mark, Mary would explicitly NOT be a virgin, just a normal woman with a normal family. I think Mark was trying to tell us we could all be Jesus, that it didn't require special circumstances to become divine, it just requires following the divine path. But later Christians hated the idea of any riff-raff could be a son of god and completely rewrote that out of the story.

    • @redcompanyINC
      @redcompanyINC 3 месяца назад

I don't think that would necessarily be considered to be offensive, more likely to simply be considered incorrect as in the scripture God consistently refers to himself in male pronouns and plural, but also as a Lord and fatherly figure, specially in Christianity were Jesus consistently calls God the father.
Even if you want to go the secular route, all the representations of the God of the proto-Hebrews was always male, even all the way back to the time he was represented to have a wife and be part of a pantheon of deities.
Besides aren't we supposed to respect the preferred pronouns of others 🤔? /s

I use “it” when I speak of god or the idea of god in various RUclips comment sections I participate in-usually of a philosophical nature. But with regard to the Jewish/Christian God, I tend to use “he” or “him”, because that’s how he’s identified in the Old and New Testaments. Just like I use “she” or “her” when talking about certain Egyptian gods identified as female in their mythologies.

The Bible was written for people who looked at the world as a mystical place capable of miracles. Intentional mystification of the people was neceessary to keep power. Every word, every symbol had multiple meanings for a complicated group of people. The Bible has been re-written in many parts to keep it tame enough for the British and larger colonial audience, which is more of a singlular homogenious experience. The Bible's many poetic and metaphoric meanings have been lost to an audience that presumes it is to be taken literally.

Isn’t there always a “Great Mother”? Yes, of course there is. However much the Abrahamists tried to suppress the true natural religion of humankind with their nature-hating philosophy, they could not suppress humanity’s intuitive knowledge of our divine Mother. I conjecture that the Reformation was another attempt to destroy the worship of the Great Mother. It has been rather successful got the past half-millenium. But the redress of this imbalance is as inevitable as the change of the seasons on our sacred planet.

When she delivered, she said, “My Lord! I have given birth to a girl,”-and Allah fully knew what she had delivered-“and the male is not like the female. I have named her Mary, and I seek Your protection for her and her offspring from Satan, the accursed. ”So her Lord accepted her graciously and blessed her with a pleasant upbringing-entrusting her to the care of Zachariah. Whenever Zachariah visited her in the sanctuary, he found her supplied with provisions. He exclaimed, “O Mary! Where did this come from?” She replied, “It is from Allah. Surely Allah provides for whoever He wills without limit.” (The Holy Quran; Surah-Ali'İmran; ayat-35-37)

Spiritual is not in the mind. Reading a spiritual work is to inspire, move into spirit in a guided balanced way, and even to cause your own knowing to arise due to reading a Spiritual work.
The four gospels specifically are each to over come an imbalance of one of the four humors. If one humor is imbalanced reading the corresponding gospel over and over will correct that imbalance and cause experiences mirroring this imbalance to occur less in ones life.
Rudolf Steiner and teachers inspired by him detail this if one is interested in looking deeper.

Thank you, John. Watched tons of your contents, and I believe you got it right in a macro scale.
Something miraclulous happened. Some wonderful person walked on earth just like Gandhi. He ministered. He taught. He didn't write anything because he was to bussy teaching. Then he left.
After that, people now need to deal with pratical issues. The Romans are still here. The Jewish cominity is till persecuting. People still are in need of meaning. So they provide it the best they could.
First paul, who knew how to write... and better (what would pay off later) knew who to build a better more accepting moviment. Then, after he was known, he comes James and Mark: lets write about it, get our version going. No bad intentions: just what they thought was best. They create a moviment concurrent with Pauls. They are a little less appealing, a little more conservative, a little too much Jewish "lets do circumcision on them all", a little more loosing.
Then comes Matthew, tries to work it all up together for a male audience.... Then comes Luke (who will later also write acts), and tries to work it all up together for a female audience.... while all this is happening, the three Johns are doing their own thing, which sometimes looks very good, sometimes is Revelation-wierd, but hey, it kinda works.
And none of them had bad intention. They truely believe they were doing the best thing. There is no conspiration in all of them.
Finally, Paul's Church tryumphant, Roman support... lets wrap it up guys, that is getting too messing, there are people exagerating, we are kind of starting to look ridiculous.
Then okay, lets get the best material together, it might take some concils to do it, then lets focus on philosophying about them.
It's a wonderfull historical phenomenum, filled with meaning, that is affecting people's lives until this very moment. It's beautiful to understand why it worked so well, and still does even to this very day.

Mary was a pure Heavenly spirit who volunteered to incarnate on earth to perform the task of being the mother of Jesus. Modern Holy Spirit teaching informs us that she was the youngest daughter of the Archangel Rafael. Worldly men changed the Biblical accounts of Mary from "a young woman" into a virgin, misguidedly trying to preserve Her purity of soul which remained pure in any case. Her purity came from the fact that She had not participated in the Heavenly revolt that resulted in the fall of the angels and thus, like all the pure Heavenly beings on earth before Her, was able to ascend to Heaven in the same style of Moses and Elijah. Instead of normal physical death their bodies were simply dissolved or dematerialised. Mary was a willing partner in the conception of Jesus but Joseph, who would never have consented, was simply "overshadowed by the spirit of a Most High" while in a trance-like state oblivious to what was happening. Prior to the crucifixion evil spirits could possess and control the bodies of humans whenever they pleased and according to the same spiritual laws so could God's spirits.

Regarding the prayer to the Mother of God, please note that the prayer does not name Mary. this papyrus was found in Egypt (Coptic country) and could have been a prayer to any "mother of god" figure. Semiramis was the mother of Tammuz. This mother and son worship was all over the Middle East and beyond. So, finding a prayer to the unnamed "mother of god" is not a Christian find but rather just some more pagan text that is all over the world.

This bobbing and weaving to get out from under the truth - that Catholicism = Paganism - is a fulltime job.
This "Luke's Gospel is the Marian Gospel" is a bunch of latter day nonsense. Find me a single statement to that effect anywhere in Luke's writings. That kind of roll your own truth nonsense is RAMPANT among Catholics and it goes well beyond that which is written.
1 Cor. 4:6 (NIV) - Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.
Catholicism goes beyond what is written as a matter of course. It's codified in Catholic dogma - the pope trumps the word of God. That dogma elevates the pope above God's own word and everybody in the Catholic Church just smiles and nods in agreement. They don't know any better. I was never encouraged to read the bible to learn about God.
Jesus said that the gates of hell would not prevail against His church. If the gates of hell have indeed prevailed against it then it is not the church of Christ. Now, look at the blood-soaked history of that Roman mess. If the gates of hell have not prevailed that thing then there's no such thing as hell. Wake up!

@@AJWRAJWR - My "mummy issues" (Egyptian and otherwise) aside, I have more respect for Mary than any Catholic I know.
I treat her as a godly woman - a beautiful young lady who God graced with His Seed. I honor her as a Jewess, who would shriek in horror if she knew that people were treating her as a goddess. Jews are a little touchy about such things, you know.
I respect the word of God, which tells us everything we can know about this lady. I honor her as I would honor any character in the scriptures, male or female. Only Jehovah Elohim (The LORD God) is to be worshiped.
Is Abraham a godly figure? Yes. Is Sarah? Yes. Is Isaiah? Yes. Is Moses, Joseph, Peter, Paul, etc.? Yes. But we don't build shrines and statues to these people because God doesn't like His image making such images.
I honor the words in the Book of Wisdom, which describes in detail the evolution of idolatry. It describes it and condemns it.
So, whether I have "mummy issues" or not is neither here nor there. What matters is the word of God. And the word of God has precious little to say about this great woman of God. All that Catholic stuff is third century and later mythology made up by people selling an ungodly agenda. Don't trust anybody selling relics and the like.

Prophetesses were a reality in Paul's churches. In 1 Cor. 11, Paul gives instructions for people speaking in the assembly. This is what he says about women:
1 Cor. 11:5 - But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
This is not in conflict with what Paul wrote to Timothy. If women are just blurting out questions in the middle of the service and causing disruption then they need to keep quiet. The same would be true of any man who would do that but it didn't seem like men were doing that. We're hearing one side of a telephone conversation. We don't know what prompted Paul to write what he did to Timothy. Now, if we had Timothy's letter to Paul then we would understand why Paul told Timothy what he told him.
But to leap to the conclusion that the Pastoral Epistles are fake just because we don't like the content is an old Atheist trick. Nobody takes these Atheists seriously.

He rejects the Epistle of Paul as a forgery but then he accepts the Epistle of James, claiming that it was authored by the brother of Jesus. Where does James call himself the brother of Jesus in his epistle? Nowhere, that's where. But James Tabor accepts it as such and so the sheep who are in Tabor's flock all say the same thing.

The Jewish translators in the third century BC translated it "virgin".
Is. 7:4 - Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Jehovah will give you a sign. A virgin will conceive. Wow! That sounds like a sign because if it was just an ordinary young woman then that wouldn't be a sign at all, would it...? No. For it to be a "sign" (as in signs and wonders) it had to be a virgin conceiving and baring a son. Otherwise, it's no sign at all.
The Greek translators didn't have to prove that Jesus was NOT the Messiah like the Masorites did. That's why they translated it "virgin" (because it makes better sense as a "sign" than just some chick getting pregnant). In the 10th century AD, the Jews had a problem that they needed to solve. This Jesus was looking too much like the Savior - that they totally missed - and so they had to change the language from what it meant back in 250 BC. The agenda of the Jewish religious establishment changed the meaning of that word. It was a political agenda. The Jews will not have Jesus reign over them.
The "mistranslation" sounds like it's the Masoretic translator rather than the Jewish translation into Greek. The Greek translators didn't have an anti-Jesus axe to grind.

The disciple whom Jesus loved, was the author of the Gospel of John. That's clear from the text. Since none of the Gospel writers identify themselves, we don't know for sure who this is from the isolated text of the Gospel of John.
But, connecting the dots, there is only one New Testament writer who refers to Jesus as "the Word". That writer is the Apostle John. And so, we can be sure that the Gospel of John was indeed written by John the Apostle because all these works are in his style.
Jn. 1:14 - And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
    1 Jn. 1:1 - That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
Rev. 19:13 - And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
John is the writer of Revelation and so the identification trickles down from their to add credence to the tradition of assigning these works to that author.
That's how that's done. Matthew is written by Matthew because of what the Gospel of Matthew says about Matthew.

Here's how much this guy knows:
    A) Nobody ever became a "Christian" in the course of Jesus' ministry. That statement betrays a complete misunderstanding of the Covenants - which one would expect from a Mormon, Seventh Day Adventist, or Jehovah's Witness.
    B) In Acts 1, you said that the disciples didn't know what to do. But if you actually read the accounts, you know that by Acts 1, Jesus had already appeared to the disciples in Galilee and told them what to do.
Luke doesn't record it but the Great Commission is on record as happening between Passover and Pentecost. Acts 1 picks up in the season of Pentecost where Jesus appears to the disciples and tells them to "tarry in Jerusalem until" they be "endued with power from on high."
So, if you actually read the text instead of making things up as you go, you can see that the disciples very much knew what to do and when to do it.
Of course, that fact doesn't feed the Atheist narrative that Jesus and the apostles were a bunch of goofballs blindly wandering around wondering who they were and what the were to do next.

Quackery. "Christ is recognized as the feminine component of the trinity..."
One thing I've noticed about these "experts" is that they don't seem to ever remember reading the scriptures that they hold themselves out to be experts in.
Jesus is not considered a feminine aspect of the trinity. Nothing in New Testament theology comes even close to suggesting that. He is the Bridegroom and the church is the bride. Real Christians understand this relationship. Jesus is the husband and is head of His body, the wife - just as a husband is head of his wife in day to day life.
THAT is mainstream Christianity and not the comic book junk this charlatan is peddling. Everybody dig deep and help support this guy so that he can go out and buy a bible and actually read and understand it.
