    for the beer drinking episode, Spenny said on the DVD commentary that his freakout was actually a lot longer than was shown. Partly was due to time, but also that some of the freakout was hard to watch, which is why it starts in the daytime and ends in the night

    Regarding Spenny's mom, if you see how far Spenny goes to respect his mom and her wishes on the show then it makes sense that he would play along with the fake scenes regarding his mother. It also validates the notion that she doesn't want to be on camera. From Spenny's perspective he has no choice, his mom is getting thrown into these situations all the time because Kenny keeps brining her up and to distance her from the show and the cameras he would agree to faking it.

  • @anthonyneilson4404

    This was a really excellent series - thoughtful and knowledgeable - and really captures the fact that all true KVS fans know; that behind all the cruelty and silliness there is some real depth there and some real love. I actually think it's very unlikely that Spenny didn't at least suspect the HIV letter was fake or that Kenny's Mother hadn't died or that DeNiro wasn't actually interested in his Hubert script but I think he just committed to believing it, in the same way that a child fully commits to its imagination. It is not exactly real but it's not exactly acting either. Spenny is too self-conscious to be a good actor but, like many great comedians, both he and Kenny are still very much in touch with their inner children, which is what makes them charming rather than just gross or idiotic. Looking forward to a 4th part if you can manage it. Maybe you should reach out to them, see if they'll agree to an interview. I'm sure they'd appreciate someone who seems to so fully get what they were trying to do.

    • @JSCG12

      Yeah if you're prepared to pay $60 for 15 mins. Much as I find Spenny endearing he's really overplaying his hand by trying to monetise everything. He's doing a pay-to-view solo gig this weekend and I can't see him getting many takers. He's a decent musician but nothing special; kind of guy who'd be playing in the corner of a bar with everyone just talking as usual. The tragedy of both Kenny and Spenny is that they only make sense together, which I think they both know on some level.

    If they had to reshoot the cop part, I'd be able to accept that pretty easily since the police were actively trying to make them turn the cameras off right before. So its very likely they wouldn't allow them to just keep filming anyway just because they're now arresting one of them.

    Just a note about asking to press charges in Canada. Choosing to prosecute someone is solely up to the crown (the government). This is true, however in practice cops can and will ask whether or not someone wants to press charges. Especially with interpersonal or domestic conflicts. I've personally experienced it myself and I have friends who have also experienced it.

    I think you’re right in your assertion that spenny goes along with being the joke. I think this is for 2 reasons that are consistent to this day. 1: He is actually hilarious, and has learned to crank his own neuroticism and quirks to ten, fully conscious that they are funny and make the show better. But it is still spenny. It’s authentic. 2: He does this because he is self depricating, jewish and has incredibly low self esteem. Kenny is happy to capitalize on his weakness.

    I think there’s a difference between manipulated and blatantly fake. I feel like there’s been instances of things being re-recorded or staged over the course of the series due to things out of Kenny’s/Spennys control like production fuck ups, network pressure, etc, but I still believe that 80% of the show is real. Great video

    I dont know if anyone else has ever noticed this but in the Gorilla suit episode, after spenny falls in the pond and soaks his suit in water, he sits on the center of the fountain and kenny lights his mask on fire through a hole in the fence. From what i remember the spot on the mask that kenny lights on fire is completely soaked in one shot, and then in the next the area is conveniently dried off. Just something to maybe take a look at.

    In my experience being arrested in Canada: While it's correct that people don't press charges in Canada (the crown does) it seems to me cops use that understood expression as shorthand for "pursue a case". In this example the case would almost certainly not make it far unless Kenny testified against Spenny. I believe that they are using "press charges" as an expression to communicate Kenny's willingness to testify.

    This video: A+++
    I wanted to bring something up. I've always noticed the 'actor' judge in the background of 'court case' and I assumed that it was Spenny using her as a character witness (as she was lied to in the actor episode) against Kenny, to hurt his credibility. I never noticed her in 'better chef' or 'better stripper' - which is weird because I've seen all of the episodes probably hundreds of times each!
    Here's a possible timeline:
    She is hired as the actor judge, meets Jamie and they start dating. It would make sense that she would be with him during the court episode for whatever reason, as well as invited to chef and stripper - as it seems they just invited / used several of their friends for a crowd in those episodes (Mark Breslin, Miriam hosting, etc.).
    What do you think? Also, if you have any more detail on what / where you heard of her going out with Jamie I would love to hear it. I've always wondered about this.
    The fake Spenny's mom just ruins those parts of those episodes for me, really wish they hadn't done that. Actual reality and Kenny annoying Spenny is gold on it's own - there's no need to cheapen it with fake narratives. Example: Kenny doing 'Helmut' while a pissed of straight faced Spenny watches on in the background. Always makes me laugh.
    As for the female producer that supposedly sued Kenny that I mentioned in the comments of another of your videos, if I remember right you can see her in the 'better fashion designer' episode. I think she only worked on a few episodes in season one.

    • @Spamerica
      @Spamerica  3 года назад +3

      All well said. I will need to look into the producer in the fashion designer episode. I have no source for the Jamie dating the judge claim, I know I've seen it here or there but I can't trace it back to anything.

    The thing about Spenny getting arrested that I don't buy is he had to stay the night at the police station to lose. Why would they keep him over night for such a petty "crime"? In this case they would have had a few questions at the police station and that's about it. Spenny wasn't drunk or anything and would definitely cooperate with the police officers.
    Another thing I don't buy about this episode is that they allegedly sleep under a bridge directly near the road on a stone floor for 2 nights without sleeping bags or at least a blanket. They don't even show how they wake up in the morning or even mention that the night was bad or that they didn't get enough sleep or having back pain from the hard floor.
    But whatever it's still one of my favorite episodes.

    Also, I'm from the same province as Kenny/Spenny and I can provide some clarity on the police situation. Charges are situational. In most cases the victim can decide the charges. But, for special situations such as domestic abuse, the police decide the charges. (This is done to prevent the victim from defending the abuser)

    Cop cars in Canada vary a tonne in their decoration, depending on when they were made, and which police group they belong to. For example here in Vancouver we have VPD, and Transit Police, both separate outfits. There's also the RCMP which operate outside of Vancouver, but within greater Vancouver. I live near a bridge that overlooks the cop shop parking area, I'll send a photo so you can see just how many styles there are just in one city.
    Basically no proof those cars were fake. If they are similar, it's because they are from the same "batch," if not they aren't. I know in Ontario they have the OPP and presumably the RCMP, those don't look like RCMP cars.

    The Spenny's mom thing makes complete sense to me. And I don't get some of your own inconclusiveness about it.
    Corrine is THAT paranoid about being on camera, every physical thing we see with her on the show of course happened, but had to be recreated after the fact with a stand-in.
    All the cut away shots of Spenny reacting or Kenny reacting (YOU'RE NOT GONNA TOUCH HER and Kenny in the bathroom lamenting that he's drunk and can't physically force himself to make a move) are from the real event; notice Corrine isn't actively in the shot; but they're spliced in with the stand-in recreations, which definitely do look acted out the more you look at it.
    The exact same situation as the Donna cup moment. "Let's dramatize it".

  • @donovaneckstrom

    I used to think KvS was partially fake until I worked on a reality TV show in Edmonton called...Northenders? Northsiders? I honestly will never remember the name...I just got the cheque and did audio.
    On weekends we went to a bar to film and most of the footage wasn't used, but when production saw a stranger interacting with our cast, they would be like "Is it okay if we mic you and you can redo your entrance and you can get on TV?" Sometimes we would use the retake, sometimes we would use the boom take. Whichever one looked better for TV.
    And that was the moment that I went "Ahhhhhh, you need to do TV magic to make reality TV work."

    • @Spamerica
      @Spamerica  3 года назад

      Yep! It's funny, the most compelling reason to me I think the show is "real" is because of stupid little things that will make no sense to people unless you do them.
      Like, I'm editing together a "special edition" of Who's the better basketball coach? with all the outtakes spliced in. And it's just impossible- I'm making decisions a decade after the fact about when certain stuff happened, I'm having to think about putting some stuff out of place because it's just funnier here vs there and it doesn't hurt much to do it that way. K & S are on the couch, then doing the rules, but I gotta put the infamous Suitcase Rant in there. But they go from the couch to upstairs in it- so now I gotta have them on the couch, then upstairs, then downstairs for the rules. Was Spenny's outburst in his room after the rules, though? Do I gotta chop the outtake up? It's an unwinnable scenario from a "reality" point of view when you're trying to make the show work, you're 100% right.

    I'm amazed you didn't include the scene in the handcuffed episode, in which Kenny clearly claps his hands during the "surprise party" for Spenny. I'd love to hear an explanation for that. Otherwise great videos! Very well researched and insightful.

  • @wherefancytakesme

    Very good commentary. The reality is that all, er, reality shows, are "faked" to at least this degree. They reshoot scenes (I've witnessed this as an extra), they edit things so they look synced up, and a quarter of things are pre-determined ahead of time as the boys have admitted-- that's why some KvS episodes have someone credited for "STORY". Their live events also have some back-and-forth that they repeat line for line if you watch recordings of the tour in separate areas. There are just some things you have to stage for the sake of the bit, for the sake of continuity, and for the sake of the cast/crew being comfortable.
    It's nice that there's this video covering all this so we can finally open up on KvS being as real as network TV allows and finally put this decade-long debate to bed in the hopes we don't fight over it anymore.
    Kenny gets mad over the idea the show is "fake", but it's as you said; What _is_ fake and what counts as real? It's a "real" show, definitely a bit realer than some other reality shows, but a lot is redone or dramatized to puff it up, like all media-- and most all of that is decided by Kenny and crew anyway, so it doesn't matter because it's the star's own decision. And even then, sometimes Kenny will just throw all that out the window and change it without anyone knowing. Spenny is the one person most always kept in the dark too, so that's definitely a more real element. Additionally, Spenny seems to be more complicit with the way the industry works (his use of the wardrobe term "my look", wearing makeup on TV, etc.) which a fun contrast.
    Again, really great analysis, perfect piece to sum up why we have this debate and how we can settle it. Definitely in my opinion the last word on KvS's realness.

    Not able to watch the vid right now so my bad if this was already mentioned
    On Instagram, Rod (Spenny’s trainer in the pilot episode) said that he was hired to play a “stereotype d bag trainer” for the show and was never paid for it. Kenny then left a like on his comment (I checked a bit ago and he unliked it eventually), which makes me think that Rod’s statement is true. But Rod did make the episode more entertaining and it was the pilot, so it makes sense why they did that

      Thank you for the encouragement. I might be optimistic, but a few things are definitely true: the show is not 100% "real", there are things (core, important things) in the show that are 100% real, and the things that people point to as being fake are usually stupid. That was maybe my takeaway from all that research.

    I imagine Corrine wanted anonymity due to the nature of the show, however Corrine Rice passed away in 2021. The obituary I found I'm pretty sure is for Spencer's mother due to the "Gross" family being involved, Gross being the maiden family name (Bianca's last name is Gross). The dead dont require anonymity any longer.

    I really don't understand your point about the coffee cups being empty and how a production team wouldn't be dumb enough to not fill the cups up. If you do a simple search you'll see very quickly that it is common to use empty cups in scenes like that.
