    Now we just need more coprocessor functions to off load windows into. Useless programs, android emulation, web browsers off load to a pi. We've needed cards like this for a while but almost every company has abandoned consumer coprocessors in favor of gpus and just telling people to upgrade.

    • @StarkRG
      @StarkRG Год назад +8

      I bet the next major new kind of coprocessor cards are going to be for quantum computing since you need classical computers to interact with quantum computers anyway. Cooling's going to be an even bigger bitch unless they can eliminate the need for cryogenic temperatures, though.

    • @anona3504
      @anona3504 Год назад +2

      @@StarkRG i think gpu makers are going to capitalize on it but a quantum accelerator is definitely going to be in the developer space. I think with pcie5 and eventually 6 manufacturers really need to look at bringing accelerator cards back since Crossfire/SLi are dead. Gpus having a line to communicate to other PCIE devices directly makes the most sense at this point cosidering DX12 and Vulkan Multi GPU mode seems promising.

Sometimes it is just getting a card past the drive cage area that is the real challenge of installing one. I used to have a GTX 260 and it would also be close fit for some cases. That was back when they were sold in local stores still, I would not buy one these days without a specific use for it since it is an older card and there are better ones out there now.

    This is what PiKVM should look like. Provide a simple PnP PCIe card, connect a few wires for power cycling and boom. You'd even have a modern graphical interface (even though I'd prefer DP for this purpose)! I don't know why this isn't a thing yet, PCIe 2.0 x1 switches with a few downstream ports are cheap, these 2D only GPUs as well, attach USB via PCIe as well and you don't even need wires for that. Heck, if the PCIe switch has some basic virtualization support, you could even hand through an emulated USB controller to a VM... I still hope for something like this to come up somewhen.
