When he pointed out that Aang is out of it emotionally, Toph is out of it physically, and Sokka is out of it mentally, I realized that those are the strengths that each of them contribute to the team. e.i. Toph is the physical powerhouse, Sokka is the plan guy, and Aang is one who's always relentlessly positive.

  • @Talisguy
    @Talisguy 3 года назад +1037

I appreciate the "Sokka is high" gag for how it manages to pull double duty. It provides an otherwise very bleak episode with comic relief while also serving the plot very well: it takes Sokka out of commission for most of the episode, and since Aang is lashing out at everyone and Toph is depressed and listless, this leaves Katara as the only Gaang member with her head still on straight, increasing the pressure on her and the hopelessness of their situation. If she cracks under the pressure of keeping everyone alive and navigating through the desert before they die of dehydration, they're screwed. She's the only one who can possibly do it. And if Aang dies out here, they won't be able to stop the Fire Nation before the comet comes. Sokka being high as balls is fun, but if you think about it, it's also putting the entire world at risk.
Also, Toph asking if she can get high too when she's feeling hopeless and probably convinced she's going to die manages the same trick of being funny on the surface but depressing if you think about it. I don't think I'd want to face my inevitable death sober either.

I really like how protective Aang is over his culture.
The way I see it, his whole arc is coming to terms with being the last airbender. He takes great care to preserve his culture's ideas of peace, vegetarianism, and pacifism. It really fits that for the end of the show, the conflict is what he has to do as an Air Nomad, and what he has to do as the Avatar, and the resolution is for him to find a way to keep balance between those two parts of him.
So when Appa is lost, it's like a part of him and his entire people was taken away from him. It's like losing a pet, a brother, and your entire culture all at the same time.
I think this is also why he had such a rough time learning Earth bending. He's ingrained these Air Nomad ideas so much that it's hard to think in any other way, and he's got to work really hard to learn a different mindset.

You nail so much of what makes this episode soar. But wow, I love how they animate Aang's emotion throughout. His dour face, when combined with the music, as he's flying after the wasp - which then doesn't change at all once Momo is retrieved. He just takes the next step and kills the wasp. And it's a dark moment. Even Momo is scared. The other big one is the use of the mushroom cloud expressing here Aang's increasingly unstable rage. They don't know what it is, but we do. Similar moment, with similar alarming music, occurs in The Avatar State, when Aang blasts the whole ground troops while in the state: They animate it just like old videos of test atomic blasts to communicate to the viewer fearfully explosive power. Beautifully done.

To add to that I'll point out that Aang's avatar state in this episode is actually the first time we see Aang in control of it. It's also the first time we hear him speak in it too which gives us the takeaway that Aang is so far past livid that he and the other Avatars in the Avatar state were going to deal with the Sandbenders personally if Katara didn't stop him with a hug.
We have seen Aang angry and upset before and pushed into the Avatar state because of it but never to that level. This episode really illustrates how terrifying Aang could be if he was pushed to the brink.

Maybe it's obvious, but Toph is so good at distinguishing voices because she can't rely on identifying by face. Sure, she can probably sense the shape of one, but human brains aren't exactly made to perceive faces that way.

@@aeroga2383 He didn't miss that, he simply says WE the viewers don't get to hear his voice till an episode in the future "appa's lost days" when we see again how appa is captured, so we can't compare the voice like Toph can in this episode.

I’d like to point out that Toph kicking the boat and being able to identify it confirms what many of us thought in that she can see on any solid substance due to vibrations but the best connection is to earth obviously

Small thing, but you mentioned how you didn’t want to explain the impact of the last scene of the episode or risk ruining the moment. Well, your show is “Over” analyzing Avatar! I want to hear your thoughts on everything!
    Great episode either way!

I remember being so mad at Aang for being so mean to the gAang after Appa was taken. But after he killed that wasp and showed no remorse, he stared right into the camera as if he was looking at me. Me for criticizing his behavior towards everyone around him over losing his bison, me for not being understanding of his pain and anger. He basically looked right at me and gave a look that said “Say one more thing about my attitude. I dare you!”
    And I immediately shut up.
Also, Katara has the patience of a saint with Aang’s outbursts. If he had spoken to me like that, I would want nothing to do with him. But then again, I’d probably be killed by him while he’s in the Avatar State.

This episode's serious moments are always undercut by weirdly animated character faces for me, like the one by Aang at 0:21 and one by Katara at 11:48. Both some of the most serious moments!

I always thought that Katara's face was weird too but then I realized that Aang is literally creating a tornado in a desert full of sand, so she probably cant keep her eyes open all the way

@@theshire9173 She's exhausted, yes, but not in a begrudging way. I also find it a sign of character development, the first time she brought him down she did a lot of shouting and reassuring but now all that's needed is a firm touch and a look of serious concern.

The Aang face is a little cartoonily angry when he's supposed to be dead serious, but wtf Katara's expression is perfect. She's so sad to see Aang like that, deeply sympathizing with him, telling him without a word that as horrible as he feels right now this won't make things any better.
It's hard to put into words but I know EXACTLY what she's feeling in that moment. It's so much packed into one single expression.

If you look closely when Aang kills the buzzard wasp, you can actually see that he fucking sliced it clean through, and as it falls you can clearly see the black dot separate into a smaller and larger black dot.

12:00 You ever think about just how on-the-nose it is that Katara was Aang's "earthly attachment" he needed to let go of in the finale? Like she is quite literally grounding him and bringing him back to himself, out of the Avatar State, in that moment.
