The Spirit RT is misunderstood by a lot by people. Chrysler in the 80’s and early 90’s made a million turbo cars using the 2.2 and 2.5 engine. These were Omni’s, shadows, Lebarons, New Yorker’s, minivans, Spirit/Acclaim, etc. The RT was a different animal as it wasn’t just the 2.2 turbo found in most of those vehicles, but a 16 valve Lotus head that produced 224 hp, which sounds not that impressive now, made the Spirit RT the fastest 4 door production car in the world. The same engine was used in the 92/93 Dodge Daytona Iroc RT. These vehicles are legitimately rare, with only a few thousand produced in total. Between myself and my nephew we’ve owned 8 Spirit RT’s and have rebuilt the engines etc. in fact, I have a video on my channel showing the build of an RT engine for those interested in the differences
Only clicked the video because a friend of mine in highschool had a Dodge Shadow turbo . He wasted so much money on that car but man it was fast. Edit - it was the original SRT 4
Great video, thank you for sharing! Seeing that SHO. I get sick looking at those years, I became an expert changing transmissions because of those tauruses.
My buddy had a 1993 SHO back then and yeap transmission went caput. It was gonna be $900 to get a new one/repair. At that time was an outrageous amount of money for a high school kid.
I've had two so far. Pretty quick, very fun cars, but I wouldn't necessarily compare them to some of the cars in this list. Acceleration felt peppy but wasn't nuts as far as the numbers go. BUT... their handling/cornering ability was very impressive. They weren't made to be speed demons - they were made to carve up the twisties on winding roads, and be very fun doing it. There was never a lot of aftermarket support, and squeezing more power out of that little 2.5L V6 was difficult. Very little room under the hood for power adders, and even with a 3.0L swap the HP barely increased. Torque did improve a bit, though.

That motor was only ever used in the car for 2 years and was the prototype for the upcoming VQ engine but actually had valve timing much like the VG30DE in the Z car of that time. Was a direct competitor to the SHO of the time. They are very hard to find now especially with the 5spd manual.
@leakyjeep5.9 lol nice. Was your 93 5spd though? 5th gen beats the 3rd gen likely in 1/4 but put them up for a top speed race and you'll be surprised to see the 3rd gen pulling ahead slowly around 120mph. I did this race before

I wouldn't call those sleepers. They were s10's but the body kits on both gave them away immediately. You may not know exactly what they were, but during that time body kits weren't just on every car going down the road, they were more special. Still crazy trucks. Would love to have a Syclone today.
Back in those years Cougat XR7, Thunderbird SC and Spirit RT and Dodge Phantom RT were the kings in Mexico, there are a lot of those vehicles here. We didnt had the vette, camaroor any other sports car, just the four I mentioned , so if you want one, start looking in Mexico
If I ever win the lottery one of the first cars I’ll buy will be the most cherry Spirit R/T that I can possibly find… as well as a first gen Taurus SHO. I’m all about those oddball performance vehicles.
I had a 91 Chrysler Lebanon 4 door,,did 110 miles an hour coming back from Disney land to Vernon bc 1500 miles in 24 hours,,,,oh and it was 118 degrees out good car,,,got 41 miles to the gallon on that trip,,,
A lot of quick cars in those days. I had (still have) an 88XJ and it was fun to drive and fairly quick for it was. Hair under 3000lbs and 185HP/250TQ, base model 2dr 5spd. You could lay rubber all the way through 2nd. The best I got out of it was a high 14 on the street. At the track I don't know but usually the street is half second or so slower. They could have so easily came with a turbo, factory motor can easily handle 14psi of boost.
@benjaminwild4002, et al, clearly you all have not heard of the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, the Chevrolet Chevelle Greenbrier, the Pontiac Tempest Safari (Wagon), the Buick Sport Wagon, the Buick Century Estate, the Chevrolet Malibu Estate, and the Pontiac Grand LeMans Safari from the 1960s and the 1970s. You also have not heard of the Chevrolet Brookwood, the Chevrolet Yeoman, the Chevrolet Nomad, and the Chevrolet Impala SS station wagon/estate car/shooting brake from the 1950s to the 1970s. Finally, you all have not heard of the Buick Estate, the Buick Roadmaster Estate, the Chevrolet Caprice Estate, or the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser that ALSO sold in the 1990s. Yeah, all of those grocery getter/soccer mom wagons had some low key high end options that they ALSO shared with some more famous muscle car siblings of theirs, you know, like the Chevrolet Chevelle SS, the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454, the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6, the Pontiac Tempest, the Pontiac T-37, the Pontiac GT-37, the Pontiac Wildcat, the Pontiac GTO, the Pontiac GTO "The Judge", the Buick GSX Stage 4, the Buick GSX Stage 3, the Buick GSX Stage 2, the Buick GSX Stage 1, the Oldsmobile 440, the Oldsmobile 4-4-2, the Oldsmobile Rallye 350. and a few others from the 1950s to the 1970s, and, in the vehicles that are from the 1990s, they also had essentially slightly less powerful versions of the 9C3 Police Interceptor packages, as well as what the 1994 to 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS had under the hood. Now if you think that Chevrolet/GM was the only company that did that, then Ford and Chrysler was doing that as well, and I will cite examples of them as well. Ford had the Ford Ranch Wagon, the Ford Country Sedan, the Ford Country Squire, the Ford Courier (1952 to 1961 was the station wagon/estate car/shooting brake version of the vehicle), the Edsel Villager, the Mercury Commuter, and the Mercury Colony Park. You know that NASCAR spec Ford Galaxie? Yeah, in later versions of all of those station wagons/estate cars/shooting brakes, you could either retrofit, or outright order, that same performance package for those vehicles, or you could even do it yourself if you knew the right people, and/or knew how to do it yourself. However, before then, there were some pretty impressive V8 engines, as well as accompanying transmissions for those engine packages. Now, as for Chrysler, you had the Dodge Polara that had two different station wagons/estate cars/shooting brakes that were either in four-door, or four-door hardtop versions, the Dodge Dart had the Dodge Dart Pioneer as its station wagon/estate car/shooting brake, there was also the DeSoto Firesweep 4 Door Explorer, the Chrysler Town and Country (the First, Second, and Third Generations of those vehicles were all station wagons/estate cars/shooting brakes), the Dodge Dart 440 Wagon, the Dodge Coronet 440 Station Wagon, the Dodge Coronet Crestwood Wagon, the Plymouth Fury Suburban Wagon/Custom Suburban Wagon/Sport Suburban Wagon, the Plymouth Belvedere 2-Door Wagon, and the Plymouth Belvedere 4-Door Wagon. AMC, unfortunately, had no strong station wagons/estate cars/shooting brakes. You want to say, "I just love super wagons, and Audi was the one who started that trend", right? No, you not only cannot say that, but you are also wrong in saying that, and every one of those station wagons/estate cars/shooting brakes that I had mentioned in my post ALL came out BEFORE your Audi RS2.
I had a 199 2.2 litre dodge spirit R/T turbo and a Dodge spirit es with the 3.0v6 out of the stealth. The 3.0 felt way faster. Running 14.9s with a 5 speed un professional driver.. loved that car.
I always hope there’s a 5 speed 97 maxima on these lists, those are great sleepers, nobody knows about them. 3000lbs, 190hp 205tq, 142 mph top speed, manual.
@@MisfitDm I remember the TC, that was before the SC. There's a mint condition 89 TC in the town I live in that I want. Id definitely get another SC if I could
Best of luck with those, parts availability for even normal cars is a great issue these days, your car may be off road for months and cost a fortune to repair. Ask the Car Wizard channel on YT.
the oldmobile 2.3l quad four ho hp was 190, the syclone 0-60 was 4.3sec, the sho was a full second slower than the grand prix gtp or buick regal gs that you didnt mentionned, even the seville sts was quicker, the cougar was a complete outdated garbage, not a sleeper, the grand prix turbo would have been a better choice
Albeit sleepers in deed, none of the cars you mentioned were “rare”.. which is what this video is supposed to be about. Not saying all the cars mentioned should have been presented, just clarifying the difference of your comments relevance.
Guess you didn't know the XR-7 and Thunderbird SC did the 1/4miles in 14 sec (faster than the HiPo 289 Mustang). Made more power than Corvette. If you think the first factory Supercharged and Intercooled car as out of date garbage nothing will make you happy.
Had 2 of them a, 1990 and a 1991. Both awesome cars especially with the "ride control". On the 1990 I put the smaller pulley for the supercharger but only added 1 or 2 psi. Wished I could have gotten a standard transmission though. Awesome car, interior with bolster seats and the body looked great with factory rims. Miss that car
Amazing car but wasn’t the hammer. The hammer was a completely different car hand built by Amg but the e500 was made in Porsche factory for Benz. They had to widen the front fenders to fit the 5l engine but the factory they had wouldn’t fit the wider fenders so they had Porsche assemble them.
@petescarport yes that's accurate just was giving a baseline the car I would own due to the style and year era the Mercedes was. Which then I would narrow in my search for the special or unicorn amg (HAMMER) LOL
@@Finestvehicles my friend had one when I was in highschool, it was a death trap, I ended up wrecking it into a tractor lol. I went to pass and this thing was so slow I didn’t think I could pass the tractor so I braked, and the car just pulled me right into the tractor tire. He tried hiding the car from his parents but that didn’t last long 🤣
That Yamaha V8 in the SHO is a fantastic sounding engine and also an absolute tragedy. It never got the attention it deserved or the transmission it needed. It's a lightweight, small displacement, high revving V8 that was begging for a manual transmission and a turbo. I have to emphasize the way it sounds again. Go find videos of straight piped jellybean SHOs. Can't say it's quite as good as a Ferrari V8 but it's not far off. They had a fatal flaw with their camshafts but it's easily fixed and probably the reason they were just ignored. I wish they got more development and that they made way more of them because they beg to be swapped into NA Miatas or the current trend of taking FWD Hondas from the 90s and making them RWD. There's just not enough of them, there's no aftermarket support at all and while I'm sure someone has mated one to a manual it's probably a pain to do.
My husbands 1st car was an 89' SHO and it had a Yamaha V6 5 speed manual. Ground affects and spoiler. It dyno'd at 376hp !! He could beat 93' foxbody Mustang 5.0 !!! Updated info from him lol- 0-60 in 5 secs and fastest 1/4 mile was just under 11 secs !! For a Ford Taurus 😂 Oh and only paid $500 for it in 98' !! Said he updated a racing cpu or something??😂 Put duel Borla 2in straight pipes and upgraded clutch and brakes. Said he spent only $3,000 more and worth every penny.
why would you pick the 99 sho? The 89 and 90....were the best. Those were the only ones with an all aluminum engine...and they were also the fastest ones
You all clearly forgot about the Chevrolet Caprice Estate, which had a few police units, so it had the 9C3 Police Interceptor package, and that there were also some nice options for its siblings in the Buick Estate, Buick Roadmaster Estate, and the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, and yet you all focus on the 1994-1996 Chevrolet Impala SS.
Heck I had a Sundance Duster with a 3.0 liter 205 hp and and 5 speed . It had a factory shutdown and 135 and still had 1500 rpm left to actually top out. I remember turn a high 12 sec 1/4 mile with zero aftermarket add on just race gas .
Most of these cars were not sleepers back in the day. Those special bumpers, spoilers, decals, colors and wheels back then were really noticeable. Now they look modest and aftermarket at best. A sleeper is a regular ass car like a Camry or a cougar
@Finestvehicles Ford Taurus SHO, Mercury Cougar XR7, Ford Thunderbird SC, Oldsmobile Achieva SCX, and the Dodge Spirit R/T are the only cars on the list you could reasonably argue are sleepers. Even though they are still all visibly different from their base trim counterparts. The rest of them like the Typhoon or Ford Lightning .etc are arguably not sleepers at all unless you were a non car guy there's no way you wouldn't know what it is. I guess it's HEAVILY dependent on how you define what a sleeper is....
I worked for Tasca Ford for almost a decade. Ive seen all of these cars. Know the owners of them and driven many miles. Especially the Cougar lol. Myy buddy Mike had a blue one. It was the 90's. I had a Starion.
@@Finestvehicles Makes no difference, it's too aggressive in both the sound and looks departments to be a sleeper. The first gen M5, (E28), now that could be a sleeper.
The first generation was faster. It's not your imagination. It was lighter and the Yamaha V6 pumped out the same HP as the lame V8 they put in the "bean" generation. The first generation was an exciting drive with a great exhaust sound. The second was lame comparatively which is probably why they sold so poorly.
Dont remember exactly how fast, but my 93 maxima i bought in 96 was sick fast. V6 and said "4dsc" on the side window....."4 door sports car".....fully loaded w bose

I wouldn't call those sleepers. They were s10's but the body kits on both gave them away immediately. You may not know exactly what they were, but during that time body kits weren't just on every car going down the road, they were more special.
Still crazy trucks. Would love to have a Syclone today.
Actually the Typhoon was 5.1 for the 1992 model and 5.3 for the 1993 model.
GMC Typhoon 0-60 in 4.3 sec., not 6.4...
Actually 5.3
@@msaintjo For the 1993 model. The 1992 did it in 5.1! I was fortunate enough to own both!
Cool i did not know that!
Much appreciated
Volvo 850R, GVR-4, Celica all-trac, 323 GTX (technically 80's but still rare and WAY cool)
Love the 5 cillinder volvo's
I had a 85 Mercury xr7 with a turbo charged 4 cylinder and it was crazy fast
Awesome!
140mph in that dodge spirit is nuts! 😂
🤣
@2:28 I love how crammed in there that 5 cylinder engine is… Audi really had to work to make that powerplant fit.
crazy!
If I ever win the lottery one of the first cars I’ll buy will be the most cherry Spirit R/T that I can possibly find… as well as a first gen Taurus SHO. I’m all about those oddball performance vehicles.
I wish you all the luck!
I had a 91 Chrysler Lebanon 4 door,,did 110 miles an hour coming back from Disney land to Vernon bc 1500 miles in 24 hours,,,,oh and it was 118 degrees out good car,,,got 41 miles to the gallon on that trip,,,
Thank you for sharing your story!
Chrysler Lebanon 😂
Chrysler New Yorker and Lincoln town car were fun times in the 90s
True!
Awesome thanks for sharing!
Wish I could own RS2. I just love super wagons and Audi was the one who started that trend
Yeah they truly were ahead of the time with the super wagons
Anyone else notice the warped/bent rear wheel at 5:07 on that F-150 Lightning? Ooof.
Wow now that you mention it
I had a 199 2.2 litre dodge spirit R/T turbo and a Dodge spirit es with the 3.0v6 out of the stealth. The 3.0 felt way faster. Running 14.9s with a 5 speed un professional driver.. loved that car.
Awesome thanks for sharing!
Are you sure about the numbers you’re saying on units produced? Are your numbers accurate? Seems kind of low on certain models depicted.
Thats why they are rare, because of the low numbers
Anyone else remember the 1991 turbo 4 speed caravan?
ofcourse!
1989/1990 were the only 2 years for the turbo caravan/voyager
The Audi Avant doesn't have a dull appearance 😂
My uncle had a 1989 Chrysler conquest tsi. 2.5 turbo and it would fly. Basically a Mitsubishi starion..
Awesome!
A good car, but it may not actually count as a sleeper since it is a bit of a sports car to begin with.
I always hope there’s a 5 speed 97 maxima on these lists, those are great sleepers, nobody knows about them. 3000lbs, 190hp 205tq, 142 mph top speed, manual.
I will talk about the maxima in a new video!
No! My 93 max was much better than the my 97.
@@leakyjeep5.9 better in what way? Stick shifts?
@@jopoveromo1054 It actually had power at 5k rpm. 97 not so much.
@ where the spark plugs gapped correctly? How many miles?
What about the thunderbird supercoupe?
Nice car, i will talk in another video about it
Remember there was a super coupe and turbo .As well as a V8
@@MisfitDm I remember the TC, that was before the SC. There's a mint condition 89 TC in the town I live in that I want. Id definitely get another SC if I could
What about the legendary Lexus LS400?
Great car!
The GS400 mid-90’s was even better with less weight than the LS! But both were fine examples!
You missed the Daytona IROC RT
I will try to talk about that car in another video
Best of luck with those, parts availability for even normal cars is a great issue these days, your car may be off road for months and cost a fortune to repair. Ask the Car Wizard channel on YT.
Rare cars, have (most of the time) rare parts
@@Finestvehicles You know what?
I think you're right. :)
If it wasn't for our lower income car enthusiast like myself then these cars wouldn't have made the list😂 I love it and wouldn't change a thing
🙏
Jag vdp is a 90s sleeper
yep
The Cougar and Thunderbird were on the MN-12 platform while the. Mark VIII was on the FN-10.
No significant difference but they are not the same.
Thank you for your insight
the oldmobile 2.3l quad four ho hp was 190, the syclone 0-60 was 4.3sec, the sho was a full second slower than the grand prix gtp or buick regal gs that you didnt mentionned, even the seville sts was quicker, the cougar was a complete outdated garbage, not a sleeper, the grand prix turbo would have been a better choice
Albeit sleepers in deed, none of the cars you mentioned were “rare”.. which is what this video is supposed to be about. Not saying all the cars mentioned should have been presented, just clarifying the difference of your comments relevance.
I wish they had used the quad 4 on the fierce. A turbo version would have been awesome.
@vincentgoforth6082 the gs and the grand prix turbo are both rare the gran prix turbo is extremely rare might wanna do some research
Nahhhh this is lotus carlton this car 1990s polices nightmare💀💀
What about the thunderbird sc
Awesome car, talked about that in an earlier video
Had 2 of them a, 1990 and a 1991. Both awesome cars especially with the "ride control". On the 1990 I put the smaller pulley for the supercharger but only added 1 or 2 psi. Wished I could have gotten a standard transmission though. Awesome car, interior with bolster seats and the body looked great with factory rims. Miss that car

In love with my 500E 🥹
I can imagine!
The mercedes benz 500 aka the hammer hands down would be my pick. They sounded so good with a performance exhaust
Yeah the sound they produce is amazing!
Which then I would narrow in my search for the special or unicorn amg (HAMMER) LOL
me and my friends called my mom's taurus the 'fo sho'😆 cause when it got to 4 it was hitting it!
Oh I don’t know I’d want to go 140mph in a dodge spirit ☠️
Haha why not?
Yeah its a shame. Yamaha also produced a great V8 for the Volvo XC-90 back in the 2000s
Ford should have put this V8 into a better vehicle that wasn't junk and that was rear wheel drive.
Imo the v6 sho tarus was quicker and better .the v8 was disappointing
My husbands 1st car was an 89' SHO and it had a Yamaha V6 5 speed manual. Ground affects and spoiler. It dyno'd at 376hp !! He could beat 93' foxbody Mustang 5.0 !!!
Updated info from him lol- 0-60 in 5 secs and fastest 1/4 mile was just under 11 secs !! For a Ford Taurus 😂
Oh and only paid $500 for it in 98' !!
Said he updated a racing cpu or something??😂 Put duel Borla 2in straight pipes and upgraded clutch and brakes. Said he spent only $3,000 more and worth every penny.
Thanks for sharing, good to hear about a couple who are into cars!
In the 90's we had the holden vn-vp-vs hsv clubsport v8 241hp factory stock
Awesome!
1991-1992 Pontiac Firebird SLP Firehawk, very rare only 25 made. 0- 60 mph 4.6 seconds, and quarter-mile 13.2
The Lotus Carlton was the best sleeper of them all. It was even banned from is own country to be manufactured.
They tried to ban it , but wasn't.
It was a favourite getaway car for robber. Stolen a lot
The fact the Neon SRT is not on this list is crazy.
why would you pick the 99 sho? The 89 and 90....were the best. Those were the only ones with an all aluminum engine...and they were also the fastest ones
I talked about that SHO in a previous video on my channel
You all clearly forgot about the Chevrolet Caprice Estate, which had a few police units, so it had the 9C3 Police Interceptor package, and that there were also some nice options for its siblings in the Buick Estate, Buick Roadmaster Estate, and the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, and yet you all focus on the 1994-1996 Chevrolet Impala SS.
I have the sho ford Taurus and that car was a hell fast
Thanks for sharing!
Heck I had a Sundance Duster with a 3.0 liter 205 hp and and 5 speed . It had a factory shutdown and 135 and still had 1500 rpm left to actually top out. I remember turn a high 12 sec 1/4 mile with zero aftermarket add on just race gas .
I am surprised the Galant VR4 wasn't in this list.
I will discuss thr galant VR4 in another video!
@@Finestvehicles 🤜🤛
Most of these cars were not sleepers back in the day. Those special bumpers, spoilers, decals, colors and wheels back then were really noticeable. Now they look modest and aftermarket at best. A sleeper is a regular ass car like a Camry or a cougar
I had the little Chrysler new Yorker people at emissions almost blew it up being a turbo this is back before the ALDL adapter

Which car?
@@Finestvehicles thunderbird sc
Most these aren't "sleepers" at all
You are correct
One could argue about that
@Finestvehicles Ford Taurus SHO, Mercury Cougar XR7, Ford Thunderbird SC, Oldsmobile Achieva SCX, and the Dodge Spirit R/T are the only cars on the list you could reasonably argue are sleepers.
The Vauxhall Carlton was named Opel Omega in other regions of eu outside of uk.
True!
I worked for Tasca Ford for almost a decade. Ive seen all of these cars. Know the owners of them and driven many miles. Especially the Cougar lol. Myy buddy Mike had a blue one. It was the 90's. I had a Starion.
The Lotus Carlton was NEVER a sleeper. What are you on?
depends how you look at it, its based on an opel/vauxhall sedan...
@@Finestvehicles Makes no difference, it's too aggressive in both the sound and looks departments to be a sleeper.
The first gen M5, (E28), now that could be a sleeper.
Supercoupe ❤
I swear the big v6 dual ohc Taurus was faster than the sho of those years
Thanks for sharing!
The rs2 avant STATION WAGON on 5 cylinders n 300+ hp on 4 wheel drive is cray... true sleeper, i would of never thought looking at it!
