I'm in the exact same boat as you; I absolutely fell in LOVE with the Layton series. When I got my DS, most of the games I played were gifts bought by my mom. Because I was considered an "academically gifted" kid, my mom saw the cover of Curious Village and thought it'd be a good 'edu-tainment' game for me to play. I didn't have a ton of thoughts on the game when she first gave it to me, but hey, a new DS game to play is a new DS game to play.
But...holy crap. The puzzles, the characters, the story, the animation, the atmosphere, the MUSIC. Everything about the game gripped me by the soul, and I ate it up like candy. I replayed this game so, so many times. I have a core memory of keeping a save file set to right before the Werris Wheel cutscene so I could always watch it whenever I wanted. And when the sequels came out, I played them even more than this one. The announcement of New World of Steam, a full decade after the mainline series concluded, has shaken me to my core. No one saw it coming. We all thought the series was done. But when we needed Layton the most, he came back.
To this day, I cannot physically, mentally, or emotionally express how much the Layton series means to me. The games comfort me on a level beyond my comprehension. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for Layton.

I played this game when I was eight years old, I went with my father to the city to buy something that I don't remember now and when we were returning to the car we passed in front of a videogame store. I remember seeing in the window ¨Mario Kart.¨ and I wanted it, we entered the store and I looked for it, the guy in the store told us that there were none left and I was very sad. We were about to leave when my father saw ¨Professor Layton and the Curious Village.¨ I argued with him because I didn't want that, after my spoiled child moment he ended up buying it and that is one of the things I will always thank him for.
That game marked me, I love that fucking game, the story, the puzzles and above all the music. I am a writer and I must say that the plot of this game influenced me a lot. Professor Layton is part of my childhood and my pre-adolescence. I'm listening to ¨Mysterious Girl.¨ while I'm writing this and I admit I'm crying, like every time I listen to this track from the soundtrack of the video game.

Honestly most Layton fans I talk to think that Curious Village is the worst entry in the series. Which is honestly a good thing because it was good enough to start a franchise, while also having the sequels improve massively on the formula. But it's interesting to hear from someone who thinks it's one of the best
I think Curious Village can definitely be hard to go back to for some people after playing any of the games that came after it (even something as simple as the way the differentiate between a character just talking vs. having a puzzle in the sequels is a massive improvement). While I'm sometimes able to rank certain aspects of the games, I can never actually rank all of them because I love them all so, so much.
I think most Layton fans agree it’s the worst of the OG trilogy, but not the worst period. It’s still a more cohesive experience than the prequel games.
Spectre’s Call is probably the weakest entry, but even the worst Layton game is still great.

Something that has just occurred to me now, having played these games for YEARS, is that in the photo of Flora as a baby there's other people present who we meet in St. Mystere. So...were they robots all along? Are they perfect copies of real people? Or are they real people still now?
I feel this is up there with Parcelle's existence in Pandora's Box in terms of who's real 😂 would love to know your thoughts!
Oooh that's a really good question! The others in the photo are Matthew and Ingrid, and I believe they are the first robots that Bruno built. I don't know if it's explicitly stated anywhere though. And love the Parcelle shout! I will definitely be talking about him in my Pandora's Box video!

I was introduced to the Professor Layton games as my year 9 exams were beginning a few years after the first game came out as a way to boost my math skills.
Since then I've played many of the games.
my parents got me this game when i was about 7 or so right before we went on vacation, and i have more memories of playing it on the plane ride and during our trip than memories of the vacation itself. since i was too young to understand a lot of the puzzles, i'd ask my parents and grandma for help, and i have lots of fond memories of trying to figure out the answers with them. for some reason i stopped playing around the second to last section of the tower and didn't touch the game again until i was 20, but even though it had been over a decade and i missed a lot of the story elements as a kid, i vividly remembered so many scenes and puzzles from the game and it was so nostalgic to experience it again as an adult. after playing it off and on for months, i yet again stopped at the exact same spot i did as a kid (no clue why, life gets in the way i guess). all that to say that i finally resumed playing earlier this year (really wish i could remember what caused me to pick it up again) and finally completed it after so many years. i absolutely adored curious village as a kid, but something about not finishing it until i was an adult made it so much more impactful since i felt so much nostalgia replaying it and i'm sure i wouldn't have been able to fully appreciate it when i was younger. the game as a whole is wonderful, and your video does an excellent job retelling the story and highlighting all the reasons i love curious village so much.
apologies for rambling, but since playing curious village again i've remembered a significant time from my childhood and i'm able to truly appreciate the game's beautiful art and music, and i just wanted to share my thoughts and experience with the game. thank you so much for this video, in a way watching it felt like reliving that part of my childhood and i can't think of any other retrospectives that have had that effect. excellent work, and thank you again :')

Surprised that this isn't more popular! Its very well made. I unfortunately had the plot of the first game spoiled by a Nintendo power article 😅 but still loved playing the game. I wonder if I would have figured out the robot twist otherwise
