Yeah, you can use them as food. What are you building? Usually im spending gems only if i really need a copy of a monster that I'm building, otherwise im skipping. Also you can go for monsters like Dracula and Kuku, because they are hard to get.

Save only gems. Currently there are no events that require saving cores, coins and so on.
