I think thats genuinely the reason why Isekai went from being a lot of peoples favourites to something many people skip. The general problem is that Isekai’s are typically built around two aspects. 1. Stranger in a strange place and 2. A quirky gimmick. Most isekai’s tend to start with a unique gimmick that pulls people in, be it the profession of the main protagonist that they use those skills to benefit them in another world, or they have a unique gadget or item or they’ve been transformed into something or they to stop at zero and use any means necessary to succeed. The main issue is that, the identity of the show in it’s infancy revolves around these gimmicks and so many Isekai eventually drop their gimmicks and/or turn into “and now I’m OP and unstoppable and I have a harem of generic girls” they all end up in the same place. Shield Heroes gimmick of having to use dubious means like slaves to work around his restrictions is a cool idea and has the moral greyness of having to work with underworld types but very quickly Naofumi is able to defeat things on his own and become OP which completely defeats the initial premise. TL;DR, most isekai start with an interesting gimmick but quickly devolve into generic OP power fantasy + harem dynamic.
What's the appeal of OP protag anime anyways? I can understand something like Frieren where she's OP but the point is about the characters' goals and relationships. Or where where it's a comedy and the gag comes from the MC being OP. But where's the entertainment in it being played straight? The MC never struggles or achieves anything. Every fight is just a cake walk and the villains freaking out about how strong the hero is.
@@apache8795 The struggle is everything but modern audience (most of us unfortunately) who have little time for entertainment with the most disposable income wants instant gratification than delayed "hero's journey". I actually completely agree the only thing it has going for it is the art. The story is awful every single character other than the mc is literally only there to prop up the mc and to gawk at how cool he is and then most of them don't even reappear you literally cannot get attached to any of the characters because they don't even feel like human beings with how they're treated and by extension it makes it impossible to care about the "plot" if there is any. Genuinely the worst writing out of any "power fantasy" type series I've read from either South Korea or Japan and I've read a ton of those. If you want a Genuinely good Manhwa go read SSS class su!c!de hunter.
The art is a huge thing. I was reading manhwa even before solo leveling begun and I distinctly remember that before it got popular good art was a novelty for manhwa, many artists were growing in skill with the story they publish. tbf art was good, but the original light novel was better.
And by the time it ended it was hard to find one webtoon that didn't had professional artists or even straight up copied sl artstyle.
