I hadn’t a clue this was so easy to make at home, have just gone through over half a dozen cans of carnation sweetened condensed milk making a variety of fudges, coconut macaroons etc to share out in my Christmas food hampers. @ Cheers Rik, I’ll definitely be attempting to make this, the powdered milk I have in the larder is Nestlè Nido full cream milk, so hopefully that will be compatible to your recipe. 😊👌👍
Considering the price of canned condensed milk, this video comes at the right time. I rarely use it except in sweet potato pie. My sister's church wants me to make some pies for their anniversary lunch. This recipe helps a lot with the expense. Cheers!
I've increasingly been using canned milk for a year now, both evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. I just don't drink much milk, and if I cook or bake with it, I just don't need a lot, so it goes sour before I finish a gallon. Canned milk stays fresher longer, in the fridge, after opening, and deepens the taste of whatever I am cooking. Sweetened condensed milk is so very handy when I make caramel sauce, it's halfway done already.
Milk can be frozen. I buy the gallon, and then I freeze in freezer bags what I don't immediately need. I can then pull out and use what I want, as needed. It's a great way to work it so that when milk is on sale it's much cheaper, and there's no waste!
Brillant aš buying cans is expensive here in Ireland. Have to shop around to find cheapest which takes alot of time either researching on line or walking. Walking is healthy. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love your receipes. Love your tips and common sense attitude to cooking. Carry on showing the world and giving pleasure to cooks and eaters alike. 🌍👍

Glad you shared this recipe Ric. My cousin taught it to me years ago and i like how easy it is to pour onto the base for squares when first made because of the hot water used. No struggling with those little cans.
Very cool. In the states it's much cheaper to get it at the Dollar tree or on sale. Powdered milk is very expensive here. It would cost more than$1.25 to make. But handy if you find a deal on powder milk. Plus most of our powdered milk is low fat or free. Heck of a job finding whole fat.
@@annettefournier9655 Here in the UK I had to buy it from Amazon, supermarkets just don’t seem to stock the whole milk powder, just skimmed & even that’s not always available!
I remember when we were little and it was very cheap. The adults tried to substitute it out for fresh milk for the kids. We would not have it. It tasted pretty bad compared to real milk. The adults learned that they might as well not even buy it, because we would not touch it.
It’s readily available in Australia. Supermarkets have their own brands, as well as major dairy companies. Both full cream and skim. There’s even A2 powdered milk, although that’s very expensive. And yet still cheaper than buying fresh A2 milk. The supermarket brand is $10 for 1kg which makes 7 litres of milk. The A2 is $19 for the same amount. I only shop about once every 6-8 weeks so I use it because it’s so much easier to store than freezing fresh milk or all those uht cartons. Less packaging too. I wouldn’t say it’s delicious as a glass of milk by itself, but add a spoon of Milo and it’s great.

I have simple syrup in the fridge that’s been hanging around too long. I’ll bet I could repurpose it for sweetened condensed milk and it would disappear in no time!
Yes you can. Thank You. Best, Rik
Rik, I thought you said bacon, not baking. I thought "What in the world does Rik do with bacon and condensed sweetened milk?" ha, ha.
In Asia - nice soft twisted rolls with bacon in drizzled with condensed milk - strange - it does work. Thank You. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChef Really! That sounds like it might be good. Bacon does pair well with sweetness, and the soft roll sounds lovely, too.

No mention of quantities!! Powdered milk is very expensive now….I would love to be able to buy a big packet like you have here, but can only find brand names like Marvel and they cost a LOT.

Good in my 🍒 cheese pie
Lovely! Thank You. Best, Rik
What an awesome recipe to have on hand. If I have s.c.m. In the cabinet, you can bet that it’s expired! I am so thankful for this. How long will it last? Ty, Rik.
You are so welcome! 2 weeks in the fridge. Thank You. Best, Rik
