I Remember the bullied coaches. I really miss the narrow corridors and compartments with sliding doors. You would sometimes have the nice experience of having to sqeeze past an attractive young lady. Well I was only just 21 when steam ended on the bournemouth line.

The loco's may carry all the glory but it's the carriages that carry all the passengers.

The fully curved sides were continued with the Mark 1 stock. I was surprised that they were timber framed. The very last of the type had the deep sliding ventilators.

What the presenter is failing to make clear is the reason Bulleid or I should say Southern Railway built the carriages using a timber frame on a steel chassis was the shortage of steel after WW2, timber was plentiful and of course the construction skills and tooling of using timber was readily available at the Eastleigh carriage works. The other important fact that was overlooked, Bulleid's design profile replicated the profile of his locomotive tenders. These were lovely coaches to travel in, comfortable and airy, I used to enjoy my trips from Waterloo down to Southampton in the 60's travelling in them. The Bulleid coaches later became the template for the all steel BR MK1's. Lovely restoration of the these coaches, they need to be preserved, not very many left.

I remember travelling in Bullied coaches when i was there, about 15 years ago ? I thought they were really comfortable although I recall the loco was a Black 5 which was a disappointment to a Yorkshire bloke like me. Then again I find it really odd travelling behind Southern locos on the North York Moors railway !

Nice to hear a bit about Bulleid's coaches as we do tend to focus so much on the engines. Definitely am learning a fair bit from these vids about the railway and it's history. And unlike some people, I don't think the presentation is annoying whatsoever.

Thanks for another really interesting video! 😍 I have just bought a rake of Bulleid coaches in OO scale, so this video is of particular interest to me. Questions though; How long will it take you to restore this next Bulleid coach? How many left in existence? And finally, how about recreating a Tavern Car? Numerous Heritage Railways have Real Ale days, so how about a re-creation of Bulleid's Tavern Car, even if it involves using a Mk1 coach?

As others have mentioned so many people took pictures of the locomotives and we only see the first few coaches and wagons. would be nice to see some full length pictures of sets of coaches and wagons.

Another good description. Might be worth noting that some features, notably the curved body frame, were incorporated in the BR Mk 1 design from about 1951, some of which were manufactured in Eastleigh.

Please can you do a video about how steam heating, vacuum/air breaking, and electricity on trains work? Essentially the pipes that go between the locomotive and carriages. Also with the power generation I don’t mean third rail electric but a different system, because on the Bluebell Railway they have a tunnel and when you travel through the tunnel they provide electric lighting even though there’s not a third electric rail.
Edit: please could you also include how water is supplied for things like the WC.

🤔 a Bulleid Kitchen third would be an idea, to go with the open third, which they could turn into a restaurant 1st,

Perhaps a quick explanation of the word Bulleid would have been helpful. It's apparently the name of an Engineer who designs various Coaches and Engines.

The A1 folks have scratch-built Tornado, so scratch-building a Bulleid tavern coach would be a doddle after that.

But unfortunately the appeal to donations for an A1 is far, far in front of that for a carriage, regardless of age, builder, criticality, intended services, etc. Its even worse for goods rollingstock as carriages are needed for passenger services.
