At 8:20, I think the better way to make the fast 8 graph was to simply start the blue line at a higher y-axis. That would represent the lobby tempo catching up to you more intuitively than the curve you did. Other than that, I thought the video was fine.
Hey just wanted to say that your video was really helpful, but I'm wondering if you could add the important stage-round intervals on the "Time" axis? I was able to understand the general concepts you discussed, but I had trouble visualizing when these power spikes might actually happen when looking at the graph. Thanks!
@@Juslin7989 yeah that actually makes sense. Draw the line much flatter but start it higher so they eventually intersect. Ill need to remember that for future coaching, thanks!

This is literally free coaching! Thank u so much! been a challenger player last set 4 and just got back playing TFT again, hardstuck emerald atm. This vid helped me alot :)
peaked at GM couple of sets ago and had a few masters amazing video and its not applicable only in higher elos but in every elo ... its what helped a lot to climb "understand your spot realtively to the lobby tempo" still struggling to apply it in all lobbies and all spike points I guesss the grind goes on forever, gl with your content it pure gold.
I don't even take this game that serious but you popped up in my algo and you're just a great presenter man. You're good at explaining your thoughts, solid teacher qualities!
But the more interesting part is every elo has it's own tempo. In the sense that in elos below emerald the tempo line is a lot less steep. Therefore, people are allowed to play these slower perfect econ games without having to match tempo (as you do once you get to a higher elo). Therefore, being the only player at 10 gold rolling for a two star board stage 2 or 3 can end up meaning you aren't able to match the mega capped level 10 board player (loss streaker who didn't get punished because everyone was playing relatively weak/whatever boards) by stage 6
Hey man, this is exactly the channel i need. Intermediate to advanced guides. I felt like i hit a wall in my improvement and i reached a point where i don't know what im doing wrong. Thanks to your videos, i realise my mistakes.
I found your channel today and the content you create and the way you do it is wonderful! I would really like to see (or better understand) the concepts of Fast 8 (when and how to do it) and Fast 9. Keep it up, your content is pure gold.
Thank you for this video. Admittedly my first content to watch from you, but i can immediately tell you're a solid coach, both during telling players what to do AND what to do better based on their common mistakes. Felt like i was being lectured in a good way!
Amazing video, I'd like a video on what to do when you have no direction early, like u have ap items but didn't hit a veigar or hwei so you have to go into carousel and krugs without a game plan
I appreciate the video! The concept makes a lot of sense in theory, but I'm a little confused on what signals I should be looking for 'in game' to know it's time to go for broke. I'd love see some real examples of people rolling at the right time vs waiting too long. I've tried timing my rolls to get the 3 star 1 cost units before hitting level 6, but it typically ends with me spending all my gold, and not achieving the goal.
Good video for beginners to understand tempo. I feel like it would have been smart to talk about the importance of scouting, It is extremely important to see if you are behind or ahead tempo and using that to determine whether to roll.
Great video - ive been doing better about ecoing early by not holding so many units and deciding what i wanna go instead of flex benching but this is good call for hp calls since ive noticed myself lower than id like later vs if i spent more money early
Amazing video. I think I finally understood the main reason why in my highest achieved elos (diamond/low master), the strength of my 2* 4cost or 1* 5cost usually seems weaker in respect to the average strength of the lobby, in comparison with lower elos. I knew it had something to do with tempo but I was overfocusing on leveling. I think this video pinpoints what aspect of tempo I am undervaluing. The video would be even clearer if it showed the relative importance of getting tempo with proper rolling and getting tempo by leveling strategically earlier to try and get the first copies of your stage 4/5 board. I guess I am overvaluing the latter and undervaluing proper rolling in stage 3 and early 4.
Instead of just explaining to us, I love how you drew graphs to help us visually understand what you are talking about! I'm part of the low elo group that always save till 50 HAHA, so I appreciate this video, I will now try to roll more to make my board stronger! C:
just tried kog reroll using this strategy. i was able to winstreak through stage 3 up to mid 4. couldnt hit xerath but i bleed out to top 3. helpful :)
I love your videos! I think you give really good tips and make the game easier to understand at a fundamental level. I think you could increase the quality by a large margin however if you tried scripting your videos, and maybe even pre-graphing some of your examples, and go through them powerpoint style.
hmm i dont know, I think drawing the graphs on the spot give a better visual at least to me. I try to script everything and make powerpoints but they take a lot of time and lately overworking has been affecting my health so I try to riff off my base points as best as possible. Trying to improve every video!
To corroborate the big spike on 3-1: last patch this board was the highest round WR in stage 3, then lowers in stage 4. Power spikes and power troughs.
Im kind of new to the game, I have a question, when I play I tend to pick out something based on the theme like ("I feel playing frozen this game") etc, which obviously is going to result in a tunnel vision to complete the board, essentially. Even if that results into a downward spiral, I thought the goal was reaching the benchmark of the traits displayed while using the team, I mean they obviously mean "powerspikes" for us newbies. But on the second example, it isn't like you can deck out a full 4 cost comp, so how were they able to transition in a lot of 4 cost member inside the team? Were they using different team as a placeholder to get the team that are on the display? To get those win streaks of course they will put items in those previous team right? Its hard to imagine that im getting overwhelmed, since there's a lot of happening in the screen and you have a timer too. I really want to learn. Oh and I learned something about contesting units today too, in addition this. A more solid notion of "powerspike" that might be unnoticable to me in a long time if I had not encountered this vid. Thank you very much.
I maxed out at master a few seasons ago. I usually end a season on low diamond. This guide was exactly what I needed. It connected dots I didn't realize I was missing. Thank you!
I've noticed in the past two sets now a lot of people in my elo (masters) roll down at 4-1 instead of 4-2 like it used to be. I always thought it was better to wait until you see your augment but the rest of the lobby thinks otherwise apparently.
I just face the problem of not finding any comp to angle for early, and often end up opening for fiora. Generally had a lot of success with it, dropped a lot not playing it when I couldn't deem it possible
This is brilliant. My question is how can you tell where you are relative to the tempo line at any given time? Hopefully that will be part of what you cover in the tempo video. Subscribing so I don't miss it.
I started played about 2-3 weeks ago and I'm in plat1. I'm mostly just following builds and guides while learning everything. I'm still having a lot of trouble remembering what champs have what traits and even what each recipie is for items. Do you have any tips for me as a new player?
as a gm player, my advice is to just pay attention to the game and maybe try to maximize every option you can per round. its a chess game and you can make moves per round, you wanna be optimal, watch dishsoap. It's about utilizing the fundamentals and making somewhat good decision making. Learning when to stop rolling, carousel components/items, knowing what components to kill/make items with, itemization on builds are all apart of the fundamentals that come with playing a lot and watching others. I wouldn't have made it to gm and nearly chall if I didn't watch pros so do that.
question : one thing i always struggle is how i manage to go fast 8 when i roll down a lot gold on 3-2. for example : i get a really bad board in begin, no winstreak, no losestreak > i hit 3-2 and roll down to 20 or 0 gold to get a stable board. i get portals and decide to play ryze portal, the problem now is that i need so much gold that i cant go 8 on 4-2 AND i got 1 contester that goes fast 8 and rolls every ryze, taric etc. how do i play that? love your videos btw, one of the best tft teachers out there
thats the thing. You arent suppose to roll down to 0 gold. That's way too much, even 20 gold is a lot, usually I stop at 20 gold. If you're playing like this and rolling on 3-2, the best thing is to probably stabalize on some reroll comp instead of going fast 8. How are you fast 8 with no gold, you just cant unless you streak the whole stage 3 and have some econ. It's better to just reroll in these scenarios and if you're rolling on 3-2 at 6, you already have level 6 odds to play a level 6 comp.
Hey just wanted to say that your video was really helpful, but I'm wondering if you could add the important stage-round intervals on the "Time" axis? I was able to understand the general concepts you discussed, but I had trouble visualizing when these power spikes might actually happen when looking at the graph. Thanks!
6:00 I would’ve thought the player who lost tempo to hold more gold would hit his 3 stars earlier/similar time to the challenger, and not that much later
7:20 definitely makes sense to me: I'm actually the opposite type of tft player, I tend to always skew in favor of board strength and trying to win (not even winstreak, but win) So my curve would be above the tempo line until a certain point where I would plateau or hit the "ceiling" way earlier than the two players you mentioned. It's nice to see it visualized as it's really easy to justify my roll roll roll mentality as trying to "keep up" with tempo while in reality its ok to be under the line for a while and bleed a little to end up placing higher in the long run
So firstly i think you explained 2 cost reroll with Kog maw basically perfectly. Where i disagree tho is on 4cost flex specifically winstreak 4 cost flex, i have not seen a winstreak 4 cost flex person winout basically ever this set. The reason for that is that itemmazation feels so important especially on kalista and karma the main carrys on 4 cost flex ( fiora obviusly more flexible and new patch gwen probably even better then fiora) but the one that is actually winning out in my lobbys is the guy lossstreaking and playing 4 cost reroll, (obviusly only able to do with an op 2-1 eco augment or golden quest/fortune favors the bold). These winstreaking 4 cost flex into legendary transition boards always bleed to 2nd/ third in my experience.
If your board is weak and/or you are low health and cant afford to greed for level 8, yes. If you have lots of pairs you could as well, but if ur strong enough you can decide to go to 8.
So if I'm understanding this correctly when I hit the corresponding optimal level for rolling (i.e. lvl 6 for 2 cost, lvl 7 for 3 cost) I should roll down until I 2 star my whole board or at least my main carry + main tank? And rolling down could be to any amount of money (even 0) just to make sure I can 2 star my board?
you roll until you're stabalized. Usually your tank and your carry are the ones with items. You roll until you can hit one of them and/or you find newer units that you can make a board with that are better than the units you have. You'll know when you're strong enough to continue playing and stop rolling just watch dishsoap.
5:50. Correct, but what you don't mention is that the bronze guy stayed above 50 so when they both fall of they both have 50 gold by that time, so I rly don't see any difference.
Yeah but there's hp difference the guy who has tempo early can now chill above 50 and roll while not dying as the other way you would have 50gold and no hp
do you have advice on when to roll on 7? i feel like when i play a comp like veigar or hwei im supposed to level on 3-5/4-1 based off hp/gold then roll down to hit 2 stars, but the board still feels weak to me. maybe i'm wrong and that's correct or are you supposed to do something else like roll on 6 earlier or something different? great video btw
you roll on 4-1 until you are stable and can make a decent board with upgrades then use that time to econ back up to 50 gold by winning because you are now stable. Don't play contested comps.
Could you talk about the relative priority between getting 2* of comp final units in comparison to 2* of temporary item holders/best board units? I mean in respect of how much gold to roll. You are saying challengers would roll to 10 or even 0 at stage 3 to get his comp 2*ed. I suppose it is so for comp units, but they would hold back a little for best board 2* units. If I am right, how much would they usually be willing to roll?
Me doing everything right but then landing 5th because the rng just doesnt math out because it takes you twice the avg rolls to not hit it uncontested. Ever since I started to sacrifice chibis to Mort and thats how i landed emerald
Im hovering betweet Emerald 3/4 rn and always struggle with my board after late stage 3 and stage 4. I will always know how to play good opener and streaking. My problem is that im not sure whether to level to 7/8 or just continue to reroll my carry hero at previous stage 2/3. Any advise?
This shows why there's a dedicated group of people who absolutely hate reroll comps. They want to just coast to level 8 and eventually level 9 above tempo, and reroll disrupts that when they roll deep for optimized boards. Then when there's 4-cost only metas, everyone gets into stage 2 lottery of trying to get the best openers, and then 4-2 lottery of trying to hit with enough gold to also go 9.
I didnt get how to apply the strategy to 4-cost carry comps. how much do we roll on 7? also, the video makes it sound like we should roll down on 8 for 2-star 4-cost board. however I see challengers sitting on kalista 1 to go 9 when the tempo allows
I have trouble trying to do 3 cost reroll comps. I get confused if I should just roll on 6 if I'm weak, or greed til like 3-5, level to 7, donkey roll, and just hope. 3 Cost rerolls just feel so difficult to play. It's like you either get a really good winstreak or smth. Because during stage 3, it feels terrible to just keep lose streaking, but it equally feels as bad when you dont want to lose gold for unfavorable odds... Like what spikes for level 7 comps? Can you only go 3 cost boards when win streaking? Can you do this when lose streaking? Can you even do this if you're in the middle? But also, this video was helpful regardless. I was masters, and I still struggle with tempo. One question I had was what you do when you are lose streaking. Like throughout all of stage 2, and then it hits 3-2. At that point, you probably need to save HP right? So do you just roll down aggressively? Because with the level 8 board example, can you even do this if you're lose streaking? Or is this conditional and can only be done when hard win streaking?
so for the 2 cost rolling on 6 example I understand the logic of wanting to spike hard so you can be stronger earlier and streak longer. But if you stay above 50/40/30 gold doesnt that allow you to reach your 3 star spike faster since you are richer and will see more shops?
Your board spike by rolling deep allows you to make that gold back with win streaks or just simply gold from winning rounds. Sure, you'll get more interest gold if you stay above 50 but you're not actually making as much extra gold as you think. You are essentially trading at most a few extra gold for a huge HP tax if you are weak all of stage 3 and consequently, weaker for a longer portion of the game causing you to bot 4 more often than the person who spikes correctly on 3-2 and uses 10 extra gold to do so.
You said that once you have the power spike you can chill and not really do anything, not even roll really. But what happens if another in the lobby is also contesting kog maw and rolling for him? If you chill won’t be fine then all then you can’t find any?

How I play is 4 cost is roll 3-4 times at 7 to get 1 copy and then go 8 for 2*

7:20 definitely makes sense to me: I'm actually the opposite type of tft player, I tend to always skew in favor of board strength and trying to win (not even winstreak, but win)
So my curve would be above the tempo line until a certain point where I would plateau or hit the "ceiling" way earlier than the two players you mentioned.
These winstreaking 4 cost flex into legendary transition boards always bleed to 2nd/ third in my experience.
when you go for 4-cost carry, would you roll down on 7 to stabilize with 3-cost first? e.g. play portal with hwei carry until swapping to ryze
If your board is weak and/or you are low health and cant afford to greed for level 8, yes. If you have lots of pairs you could as well, but if ur strong enough you can decide to go to 8.
This is pure hidden gem
It'd be amazing if you could explain in more detail what tempo is 😊
So if I'm understanding this correctly when I hit the corresponding optimal level for rolling (i.e. lvl 6 for 2 cost, lvl 7 for 3 cost) I should roll down until I 2 star my whole board or at least my main carry + main tank?
Your graph would be amazing in 3d with a third dimension representing gold
do you have advice on when to roll on 7? i feel like when i play a comp like veigar or hwei im supposed to level on 3-5/4-1 based off hp/gold then roll down to hit 2 stars, but the board still feels weak to me. maybe i'm wrong and that's correct or are you supposed to do something else like roll on 6 earlier or something different? great video btw
you roll on 4-1 until you are stable and can make a decent board with upgrades then use that time to econ back up to 50 gold by winning because you are now stable.
If I am right, how much would they usually be willing to roll?
goddamn bro that jaw is humongous, that is crisp af
great video! thanks a lot!
Any advise?
great content !!
Thank you for this. This is what I've been looking for since set 10❤❤, luckily the youtube algorithm made it 😂
What about 3-cost reroll like veigar/vex or hwei?
Great video, pair this with Meta builds to know board strengths
This shows why there's a dedicated group of people who absolutely hate reroll comps. They want to just coast to level 8 and eventually level 9 above tempo, and reroll disrupts that when they roll deep for optimized boards.
Then when there's 4-cost only metas, everyone gets into stage 2 lottery of trying to get the best openers, and then 4-2 lottery of trying to hit with enough gold to also go 9.
i very intuitively understand this concept and agree with you im going rank 1 i guess
I didnt get how to apply the strategy to 4-cost carry comps. how much do we roll on 7? also, the video makes it sound like we should roll down on 8 for 2-star 4-cost board. however I see challengers sitting on kalista 1 to go 9 when the tempo allows
How to figure out wich comps are that strong to get us time for the cash up?
Great way of explaining it
