This was Yates toughest game in the playoffs. In essence, it was the state championship game.

@olemissfan91 I have to disagree. WO-S outgained Yates in total yards, first downs, and penetrations. Jones did not accomplish those measurements in either of their two games. I think in the minds of many Yates fans Jones seemed tougher because of the familiarity factor between the two schools. Back then, you all had never heard of WO-S, or knew what to expect, while you knew all too well about Jones. In multiple interviews I read from Coach Booker, he was dismissive of all Yates opponents. The fact is his team had the fight of it's life in this game. The game was tied 6-6 in the 4th quarter. On the opening drive, WO-S had first and goal at the one yard line, when on the next play the players thought the refs blew the whistle, stopped moving, the ball bounced out and it put WO-S at the 10. Shoulda had a TD there. Four missed FG attempts (one was blocked). Interestingly, Jones and WO-S had another common opponent that season - Houston Westbury. Jones defeated them 26-0, while WO-S won their contest 40-0. I watched Jones play that year. I thought WO-S was a slightly better team.

@olemissfan91 I'm not going by just yards. Like I said...yards, penetrations, 1st downs, many missed scoring opportunities - the whole package. I'll add defensive stops, too. WO-S also had their best O-lineman and starting tailback hurt and not playing in this game. I maintain that WO-S was just a little bit better than Jones. BTW...I attended the Pasadena Dobie vs. Jones game at the Dome. I remember a Dobie LB getting a bad pass thrown right into his hands in the 3rd or 4th quarter. He dropped it. If he catches it, he easily runs for a TD and Dobie wins that game. Dobie was a stout team that year. I followed their QB, John Evans, while he played at Lamar University where I also attended. He had a good college career.

@olemissfan91 Really...Matt Wingo? I remember him at Texas Tech. 'Didn't realize it was him who dropped it.
