Originally released in 1979, this sleeper hi-energy disco hit made number 1 in the UK singles chart in September the following year. It was also the third best selling UK single of 1980.
It was also a top 10 hit during that first year of the decade in Germany, Netherlands, Australia, Netherlands, Belgium and Austria and has been a dancefloor favourite ever since!
The song was written by Mungo Jerry's Ray Dorset and had originally been intended for Elvis Presley who recorded it but passed away before it was released.
Scottish singer Kelly's version has appeared in several movie and television series. Most recently in Channel 4 UK-HBO Max's 2021 TV smash "It's A Sin", alongside the Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Bronski Beat, Queen and many more. It is also featured in Shane Meadows' "Once Upon A Time In The Midlands" and the 2005 comedy-romance film, 'Imagine Me & You', in the Dance Dance Revolution sequence.

I saw her at a gay club in Birmingham in the mid to late 1990’s, she was doing a personal appearance on stage with Tina Charles, they were both great, they were both a bit pissed but they were still great. 😀 Obv the crowd loved em, myself included.

Yeah..I first heard it back in 81 right after i graduated high school. I went to a club w my mom in dayton ohio (bad city) It felt so good back in them days.Im so glad to be back in the comfort of new england now, but those sure were some fun times !

I was born in 1982, and this is the first time hearing this song. I LOVE it.
@2:02 - That bloke was using one of those old "lightweight" video cameras...the tape was in that unit at his feet, and the footage was recorded directly onto that, giving you much more ease of movement with the camera itself. The tape was standard VHS size and you simply ejected it from the recording unit and played it back on the VHS player at home.
My uncle had a set up like that, cost an absolute fortune. No filming your night out on your phone on those days...

I was gonna comment about that camera being an early VHS video camera but you took the words out of my mouth lol! Being a vintage video enthusiast I have such cameras of that period still in working order and had a few working portapack VHS decks but each one failed after a while. Here's a link to a local airshow I recorded in 2019 onto an 80s portapack VHS via a VHS camera dated around 1979 or early 80s ruclips.net/video/5N9dHD5kREk/видео.html . I am curious to find out what brand that camera is.

They did these promo clips by playing a "rough track" live while they were filming so the artist could lip synch in time then they dubbed the edited footage with a studio track.

This ONLY topped the "official" charts; could only get to #2 in New Musical Express and #3 in Melody Maker, kept out of the top spot of both by the achingly haunting ballad "One Day I'll Fly Away" by Randy Crawford. One wonders if those two charts had some kind of disco fatigue or something.
