Reduce all senator and representative pay, do a pay cap for all politicians, NO annual rase, set term limits, No politician can accept money investments or company CEO/top pay positions for 5 years after leaving service. Let politicians be treated the way everyone else is treated and see how may stay in public service.
Is disgusting that these people can spend their whole career in public service and become multi millionaires by insider trading and peddling for companies instead of working for the American people!

It's not even that, though. The debt ceiling as a time bomb that Congress makes, they can blame the president for exploding that only they can fix.
Congress passes a budget and sets taxes. The president MUST, by law, adhere to the budget Congress sets and has only the tax revenue they bring in to spend that budget. If the taxes don't cover the expenses, then the president, being bound by law to adhere to the budget, must borrow money to cover the difference. Except that the president can't borrow above a certain arbitrary dollar amount without congress approving it. So the time to argue over this isn't when the president has to pay for things that are already bought, but it should be as the budget is being passed.
Every other sane country includes that if the budget exceed taxes, they have implied the approve borrowing needed to pay for the budget they passed. We're the only ones shooting ourselves in the foot like this. Not to mention, it's all just political theater. I understand that something needs to change but it’s hard to compare the US to most other countries. The sheer size and resources needed to maintain the country’s is huge compared to pretty much anyone else except for china and Russia. And most 1st world countries have similar amounts of resources. So copying Norway or Finland or any other country wouldn’t work without us going completely broke. The fact that we’re so big, and high on the freedom index is a major achievement. To be able to copy anybody it would need to be china or Russia, which would lower our freedom severely. And will definitely cause an uproar or maybe even a coup, depending on how bad it is.

Fucking Chuck Schumer (the majority leader of Senate) shared rooms with others to live in DC for his first 30 years of his service as Congressman from 1981 (81-99, House of Rep, Senate from 99).
