  • BBC-Documentary about the original It-Girl Clara Bow.
    "On screen she was bigger
    than Garbo, bigger than anybody.
But off the screen she disappeared

Only now in the 21st Century are people starting to really appreciate the (genius) of Clara Bow. I have been following her movies since I was a kid on the Bill Kennedy Showtime at 1:00 p.m. ever afternoon. She was a bursting bubble, full of energy just like a fairy sprite flitting here and there across the screen. Her (eyes) exploded the screen with emotion no other Hollywood starlet at the time could compare to her charisma, nor her comedic timing, and those eyes could speak a thousand words without uttering one syllable.

14:13 ...Clara's father married her secretary as it is written in this blurry article. The very same secretary who stole from Clara Bow and slandered Clara's morals in Court to take the heat off of her accountability for stealing from Ms. Bow. You can almost wonder whether Clara Bow's father was in on it when the secretary, who he married, took funds from Clara's account. Clara Bow later received a retraction from the newspapers as to her morals, but the scandal destroyed her career in Hollywood & she still received fan mail right up until her death.

+Waddya Tawkin Interestingly Clara said later in life that she was passing the "It Girl" mantle to Monroe. The great thing is that now with the internet, people can discovery Clara Bow again. I just recently watched one of her movies, the first I had ever seen of hers. She was a very good actress with a lot of charisma.

      Mary Pickford had IT.
Vivien Leigh too...if not the most beautiful actress of all time.

Jean Harlow also had “it.” My three favorite actresses are: Harlow, Monroe, and Clara Bow. Each one of them positively lights up the screen, and you can’t take your eyes off of her!

Clara was ahead of all of them- I absolutely hate when a young Hollywood "starlet" is referred to as being the latest " It " girl.
I'm like please do your research. 98% of todays actresses will never be like Clara.

This makes no sense since she would have been a perfect Jean (Harlow) instead.

I seen Clara's silent film last night on TV. This was the film their talking about now on this RUclips Post. I'm not so much a fan of silent films. But their was something special about Clara's eye and facial expressions held my attention all through the film. One could believe, if Clare was a young actress today, she would be a Film Star.

      Yes.
They never gave her great scripts, and she didn't know how to stick up for herself the way Bette Davis and others did. So she got a LOT of poor quality scripts. But the movies are enjoyable because of Clara. She's amazing to watch.

So many of these female stars of the 20's - 40's were so short, i.e., Gloria Swanson 4'll" to most other female stars 5' to 5'3" which is very short yet the male stars where most at 6' tall or more. A woman has to be at least 5'7" to have 'long legs'! Am I biased or what?

I wish more women and Hollywood actresses were like Clara Bow. I am young and I would marry the first woman like her, I would love to have a 1920s style wedding! Too bad most women have a body count of 30+ and constantly have to remind us they don't need a man. Too bad, that is why most women are single in their 30s/40s and heavily medicated with depression medication.

I just cannot understand why no one mentions that his partner star in "IT", had "it" too. The writer thought of him for the role. The name of that gorgeous, nice, dreamy man was Antonio Moreno and he was too sensational in the film.

If Clara Bow was such a great actress then why was her career over in the early 30's? Joan Crawford played the same type of jazz girl roles as Clara Bow. Bow starred in "It" and Crawford in Our Dancing Daughters - both jazz age flapper roles. But decades after Bow was out of film and long forgotten Joan Crawford was still a big star and winning Academy Awards. It is because Clara Bow was a very limited one dimensional actress who played a character only identifiable with the 1920's or jazz age. The stock market crash of 1929 brought the 20's to a close and Clara Bow's career along with it. Joan Crawford was an infinitely better actress who could adapt to the changing times while Clara Bow couldn't..

Clara Bow was frightened of the talkies; while she made the transition to sound, she found the new medium terrifying. Her insecurities, plus her exhaustion, mental health issues, and legal troubles put a damper on her career. She chose to retire, and focus on being a wife and mother. Bow could have continued if she wanted to, but she had enough. As for Joan Crawford, she was a big star for quite a while but she died a recluse. Hollywood isn't easy and it's especially hard for women. Just because someone doesn't have a long career doesn't mean that they are not talented. Bow made 11 sound films, which is more than many other silent stars.

@Sita Baichoo Clara's voice was accepted by the public. Her voice was not "screechy" like that of Jean Hagen's Lina Lamont in "Singin' In The Rain" (a film that I have on DVD, by the way). Clara Bow's last two films received excellent reviews and her performances in both were praised. I have seen several of her sound films so I know what I'm talking about. So yes, she could have continued had she wanted to. She came out of retirement for her last two films and she chose not to continue with her career. As for the "snobby" part, it was specifically stated that Joan Crawford pretended not to know Clara after the former's marriage to Douglas Fairbanks Jr. That was Crawford caring more about her advancing status in Hollywood than her friendship with Clara; many of these people came from similar backgrounds yet they looked down on her because they cared more about how they were perceived by the public and others in the industry. Veronica Lake inspired Jessica Rabbit, I don't see how that would be an insult, and Betty Boop was and still is a popular cartoon character. If Clara Bow was the inspiration, I see that as proof of her influence and presence as an actress and movie star.

I think your kind of short sighted. When the talkies came in a lot of silent film stars didnt transition. Clara did but choose to retire. Good for he. I hope she didnt have to support her father anymore

    • @StellaWaldvogel
      @StellaWaldvogel 4 года назад +4

Ummm - NO. Joan Crawford had a long career because she WANTED a long career and she could play politics, social climb, and be VERY manipulative. Clara just wanted OUT.
And Joan wasn't "winning Academy Awards". She only won ONCE, for "Mildred Pierce" in 1946. She was a good actress, but she couldn't TOUCH Clara Bow. And in Clara's early 30's films, she was NOT playing flappers. (Though the Jazz Age includes the 30's as well as the 20's.
