- Soul, the new CGI animated film from Pixar, is dropping on Disney+ on December 25th, 2020. To celebrate its release, IGN sat down with Pixar movie director Pete Docter to talk about all the creativity that went into designing the titular souls like Joe (Jamie Foxx) and 22 (former SNL cast member Tina Fey), as well as the ethereal kindergarten teachers, better known as the counselors.
A veteran director of Pixar animated movies like Monsters Inc, Up, and Inside Out, Pete Docter is one of the best directors at Pixar. Soul, his new film (which is premiering on Dinsey Plus), follows an aspiring jazz musician turned music teacher, who, after an accident comes face to face with his mortality and the great beyond. This isn’t the first Disney Pixar collaboration to take on difficult topics. But with Soul, Disney teaches kids about the meaning of life and the acceptance of death.
While this Pete Docter interview doesn’t focus much on the plot of Soul, it does take a deep look into the Soul animation process and highlights all the creativity that was needed to design the out-of-this-world characters.

No, listen. There's this other information (go check other Soul interview video) that "22" is just a shortened name. Her real name is something "107 billion 200 thousand and 322" (yeah I know it's too long that I barely remember, lol). Pete Docter mentioned that.

@@NenaArindrasari That doesn't make as much sense to me though. If 22 were really the 22nd soul ever made, it makes sense why she has had different mentors from all ages of history.
@@TECfan1 yes, she received mentors throughout the history since she stuck in You Seminar for hundred/thousand years, as mentioned in the movie. Also the mentors she met (from the movie) are those who had lived during 10-20th century era.
If 22 is literally The 22nd soul (without the billions name), she would have met mentors lived from the millions of years' era, and that's crazy.

Pixar Storyboard artist, Aphton Corbin, made the suggestion for the counselors. Her idea is what you see on screen.

its funny how no one understands that jerry is just one being and that being is reality itself. the first jerry described herself as all the quantum fields of the universe.
And then there’s Terry.
That wire thing was amazing. Like who could’ve think that? Hands down PIXAR is the go to for real life incredible stories out there!
That's actually an old technique used in a number of art installations that I've seen in past decades. Not in the Picasso style but using wires in 3d that look random but show a recognizable image as a shadow.
Man its so cool to see this creativity! The concept of the movie is already perfect. Soul music + human souls. I would have loved to be there when they came up with this idea!

This is INCREDIBLE, I am awe-struck by how smart and original these design choices are.
The counselors really feels like the string theory manifested itself
Aerogel is not 'tough', actually it is unbelievably fragile and prone to shattering if handled incorrectly. It does however have incredible thermal insulating properties due to being mostly air, hence why it could be useful as part of a heat shield to withstand high reentry temperatures.
I have 4 pieces of aerogel i can contest it is very very fragile
Relative to its weight it’s considerably tough. They meant tough as in able to withstand high temps.

The counselors look like super paper Mario characters
Could have gone farther with the “life shapes your soul” and made the souls of the once lived different colors and given them symbolically identifiable features based on their self identity and not just their appearance.
The wire sculptures are awesome though I’d love to get one in an auction 🤩
Yeah, but I think the point of a soul is that no matter what color our skin is or what experiences we went through on Earth, we're all inevitably going to be on that escalator to oblivion when our life ends.
But I do agree that it's an amazing and illuminating film! 👍
I like how when they revealed the teaser for this movie everyone was like mad for some reason and as soon as it came out everyone loved it. Wack.
I love seeing all the work and research they do, seeing how their minds work and how a story develops, and its such an interesting detail that the souls are represented, or at least made to look like aerogel, thats awesome!
I remember when my friends and I did a presentation of Pete Docter's life as a filmmaker
You know if Nickelodeon made this, the souls would look like pickles.
What a way to give kids existential crisis at a very young age. So the movie shows that when you die your soul will ceased to exist too while heading to "the great beyond".
they actually got inspiration for the lost souls from the default soul enemies from luigi’s mansion 3. From the look of void purple and glowing eyes and mouth, to the noises they make. They even run away from humans when in distress.
Atleast that is what I think.
Aerogel isn’t tough. It’s actually quite fragile and disassembles quite easily. But it’s an incredible insulator of heat. It’s one of the best known. So it’s used in spacecraft and heat shields to keep the internal instruments and whatnot from melting. The heat stays outside and is never transmitted into the spacecraft. That’s why they’re in spacecraft.
The you seminar is such a relatable place I don’t know why

I’ve always hated talking about kids like we never where kids. Like why do you have to say kids understand things like yes I was a kid and I understood the message in cartoons like do we forget at one point or something that we have to be reminded 😆

Same with people with silver colored eyes. I've seen it in a few people in my life. It's really fascinating! It's almost like...as one person with silver eyes I know put it, there eyes are so light blue, they appear silver.
It's extremely rare, though.
All humans have blue eyes. Eye colors differ depending on the amount of pigment in the iris - blue eyes lack pigment, green eyes have some pigment, and brown eyes have a lot of pigment.
this is probably my favorite non-sequel pixar movie in recent years.
The councelers designs remind me of a very old cartoon named La linea, and a ps3 game called Flow.
6:15 Every time I saw one of the counselors, I always compared their art style to that intro scene from Fairly Odd Parents when Timmy turned Vicky ‘obtuse’.
The counselors are what an 8 dimensional being might look like if it tried to fit into a 3 dimensional space

The design of the counselors is cool. The design of the souls... well, it's an interesting story I guess, but the end result is that they look like Casper the Friendly Ghost.
I like how they landed on the most basic design, i think if most people were asked to draw a soul or design a soul or what ever they'd come up with some light ghostly like figure, seems like a very complicated route to get to a very simple design.

Take notes fan fiction writers! I tried to write a warm up paragraph about Soul, without knowing what souls were made out of and I couldn’t do it adequately. So I was forced to avoid describing the material altogether.
If I was describing the souls now, I would use the words foggy and gelatinous.
Other words you can use are: porous, translucent, cloudy, opalescent, multicoloured. And maybe prismatic, rainbow-hued.

I would love to see them explain why they designed their black characters the way they did, and allowed a white woman to voice the black main. Really want to hear them defend the racial stereotypes behind the choices of the black designs versus the designs of the other characters.
