In my view it is very simple and comes down to this: First-class managers surround themselves with first-class people, who constantly challenge thde status quo, thus pushing the entire team forward. Second-class managers (who normally have an over-inflated ego like Gene Haas) surround themselves with second- and third-class people, who primarily are "yes men", but not movers and shakers. The conflict between Gene Haas ("results first, then investment") and Guenther Steiner ("investment first to facilitate the achievement of the desired results") would normally result in a robust debate, leading to a compromise and step-wise implementation of an agreed plan. But here two alpha-males crashed into each other, with one (Hass) being a bit more alpha than the other, as he owns the team and has the final say. The standoff ended in the worst outcome for all involved - for the team owner, for the (now former) team principal, for the drivers, the team, and the fans.
Whether the new chap will perform better than Guenther Steiner remains to be seen (I personally doubt it, as Haas is a notoriously under-funded team), but I am quite confident that after a certain lag time Guenther will be back in a new role with a better team. One door closes, another one opens - I believe I heard that Andretti is hiring....
