I started playing the Game Pass version on PC yesterday and am using the Alienware AW3423DW. Much like what you have said here for the Xbox settings, I have HDR brightness as Bright, UI as Bright and HDR Gamma left as the default of 50. This seems to work well, and after a good session last night, there seemed to be enough details and not much black crush, which I had a few issues with on Horizon FW and Ghost of Tsushima.
Found a few settings to remove film grain and running it in DSR seems to clear the IQ up nicely to enjoy the picture. I personally think it looks, runs and sounds great - though I did like the first one a lot.

I'm playing it on a mini led monitor with local dimming on (570 zones and 1000nits) but since I don't have the HGiG/DTM option the game at 50 gamma is WAY too dark, it might also be due to the local dimming that crushes shadows a little bit, so I'm happy with the gamma set to 70, at 50/55 is just way too dark

Fantastic settings/recommendations! In addition to using DTM and changing the in-game HDR brightness to “Bright,” the only other thing I’d add is to set “Fine Tune Dark Areas” to -3. The blacks in this game are very close to perfect, but not quite. You can tell by looking at the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, or by looking at cave entrances. Setting FTDA to -3 gives you true OLED blacks without sacrificing any shadow detail 👍🏼

Is that game too dark of do you just prefer a brighter picture?
Why are you suppose too see every detail (clearly) in very dark areas? Are the shadow details actually crushed or is it just very hard to distinguish the dark details from each, because they are so close together in brightness?
I really like how the game looks and the darkness really adds to the atmosphere. It makes sense that you don't see some details in very dark areas.
    ---
Just tested a scene where I looked at the sun with a rock in front of it. The side of rock that isn't lit up by the low sun is dark. As soon as I increased the gamma to 60 I can see way more details on the rock, but it doesn't make sense in that scene. The unlit side of the rock shouldn't be this bright and detailed. It doesn't fit the scene at all.

Black Floor Lowering by -0.003 ~ -0.004 nits makes it look perfect on OLED in a pitch dark room.
There are certain scenes that are supposed to be true black but are raised by this small amount.
This tiny adjustment actually makes the shadow details look so much better as you are getting a huge perceived contrast boost from being able to use true black as the reference point for your eyes to compare the fine details in the shadows to without crushing any details. There is a very subtle cast / haze in darker areas without this tweak.
But yes, stunning looking game, very good.

There’s this thing among some HDR enthusiasts that just cos it can get super bright they want it bright all the time. They ignore the “range” part of the name and just want everything to be neon bright and burn your eyes (and that look can be great for some games and films in futuristic cityscapes but not for everything)
As a horror film fan, I love that games and films can get super dark when the situation calls for it
I really got annoyed when Vincent Teoh went on his so-called “fake HDR” crusade during lockdown by calling many films scams just cos they were only at 300-500 nits when SDR is 100 nits so it’s def in the HDR range and this was the artistic intent of the director for how they want the image to look (only a coincidence he drummed up drama for his side job when he couldn’t do his day job as a TV calibrator visiting homes during lockdown I guess)

correct. Even a game would support DV natively you would have a hard time to see a difference without a side by side comparison.

I you are using dlss you must cap the game at 60fps in the Nvidia control panel.
The game runs uncapped if you are not playing at a native resolution.

I'm going to wait to play the game until this is fixed by the developers I think. I'd like to play it true to the producer's cinematic choice, but not at half of the peak brightness of my display. I don't know how long steam let's you return a game, but it said hdr capable. This was a lie. I'm tired of this "fix it after release" mentality

I have a general question for anyone and everyone who can answer: why are games rarely ever using the HDR system calibration on consoles (PS5/Xbox X)? is there some technical limitation or reason(s) that I just can't think of?

Great video and the recommended settings look great although I did find HGiG looked ok in a completely dark room
. Unfortunately the audio mix here is a massive step down from the first game and it also gets my vote for the most disappointing and underwhelming Dolby Atmos presentation I’ve heard to date on a game in recent years. I know that binaural headphones were their target but that’s no excuse for such a poor audio presentation when using an actual surround system.

Did you change the audio setting from ‘headphones’ to ‘speakers’? Sounded terrible almost without centerchannel and wrong placement. After changing this I can say this audiotracks is one of the best I have ever heard (and I have a good system/receiver, 6 heights). Worth to check ;-)
